Antique cameo glass vase. Made in France 19th century. Measures approximately 4.5inches tall. Organic. Irregular shape, somewhat triangular, but very rounded and naturalistic in shape. The consistancy of the glass itself is extraordinary- mimics a seashell with inner layers of different colours ranging from white, through yellows, pinks and peaches through red. The outer layers of glass are in shades of red, brown and green, polished in contrast with the organic underlayer. The carving is exquisite with minute detail of nasturtium, finely scrolling tendrils and foliage. Upper rim is rounded. The vase is not signed. Which is amazing considering the quality of the work and glass. It smacks of the best of Emille Galle or Daum Nancy. Condition: good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Emile Galle` was trained as a botonist and loved nature. He brought this love for nature to his production of cameo glass. A tradition that he was one of the originators and trendsetter. He began producing landscapes in the 1890's. Scenic pieces he referred to as"paysages de verre. This was the basis of Galle` profesioal faith: Our roots are in the depth of the woods. Height: 11 inches Opening: 2 1/2 inches Width: 5 inches Base: 3 1/2 inches I don't know if this is the real deal or not. The vase is cased glass acid etched. The colors are Galle colors. Their is a pontil mark on the bottom. The lip of the vase has a nice roundness and is not sharply cut. The shape is one that Galle produced. I am not guaranteeing that this is an authentic period Galle vase because I don't know for sure. In any event. The vase is gorgeous. Although he enjoyed only limited commercial success. Rousseau pieces are rare and unless signed. May be difficult to attribute with reasonable certainty to Rousseau. When Rousseau retired in 1887, Leveille took over his plant& in subsequent years produced a variety of art-glass including a small amount of glass with relief carving in the surface. Galle admired and was influenced by Joseph Brocard and Eugene Rousseau. Circa 1885. Eugene Rousseau associated himself with his student Ernest Leveillé(1841-1913) Although Rousseau was never conscious of signing his pieces prior to 1885. We present to a"RARE" 1889-1900 Emile Galle signed Cameo carved multi-colored layers of white. Deep yellow and olive green. The Galle signature technique raised layered relief on base of glass with enameled design of enhanced colors with transparency of opaque cameo to clear materials. Wheel and acid etched. The Vase follows the technique of"wheel cut" bottom. Which shows as cut a layering of the yellow, green color overlay utilized for this Vase. The design is atypical of Galle"Botanical" collection. This particular design is of"Yellow Clematis" used frequently in other colors by Galle. As the photo's depict the stems and leaves are green and lead up to the yellow flowers. The bottom rim of the Vase is wrapped in a deep Olive Green to Yellow. It is internally polished as is atypical with Galle ... moreas well. It presents Art Nouveau elements with very exquisite model and no defects. The coloured glass is put in layers and you can see more shades and milky tint that is specific to the original pieces. This is a very hard model to find at this age and it's shades because it was custom-made for a noble family from Romania.
