DESCRIPTION: This is an antique glass bud vase from around the 1800's that measures 6 1/4" tall. The highly reflective surface played havoc with the camera. The bottom shows the true color of the silver over the entire piece. It was hand painted with white leaves and design with colored flowers. There are no chips. Cracks or stains, but there is surface paint and decoration loss. Mercury glass(or silvered glass) is glass that was blown double walled, then silvered between the layers with a liquid silvering solution, and sealed. Although mercury was originally used to provide the reflective coating for mirrors, elemental mercury was never used to create tableware. Silvered glass was free-blown, then silvered with a solution containing silver nitrate and grape sugar(glucose) in solution, heated, then closed. Up for auction is a teal green frosted Victorian Mercury glass vase with hand painted flowers painted with cold water paint. The top part of the vase is frosted and has the flowers. The base is a clear teal green. The mercury in the base part of the vase seems to be missing. The rest of the mercury appears to be in excellent condition. The flowers are missing their centers and there are a few small nicks in the cold water paint. This shouldn't hurt the vase. The paper or foil sticker for covering the hole on the bottom is also missing. There are no chips. Antique mercury glass vase. Victorian era vase dating from the late 1800s. Frosted white around the center of the vase. Remnants of hand painted flowers remain. Measures 10" tall. No cracks or chips. There is some silver loss. Most at the bottom of the base and around the base stem. The inside of the stem has lost most of the silvering. The paint color is mostly off the flowers. But this leaves a neat silhouette with the silver color coming thru the white paint. It's still a neat look! Super clean inside and out! We are a non smoking home. Antique Mercury Glass Vase silver 8.5” classic
Classic style mercury glass vase from the 1800’s. Stands 8 1/2” tall. Nice pontil bottom. Some discolor residue in various parts. Like from tape. It does come off with water and gentle scrubbing, but I’m afraid to do more. I leave it to the professionals. Some of the silver appears to be age affected or degraded. It’s very hard to photograph, but will keep trying if you want to see more photos. Will ship double boxed and insured.
