This piece does at least have some provenance. Provenance: This amulet was found in a Meiji Dynasty Dansu Chest which was accompanied by a dated receipt of the purchase. It was purchased at an antique store in occupied Japan. Tokyo in 1947. The prior owners name was late film actress Mamo Clark Rawley. She starred with Clark Gable in the film Mutiny on the Bounty in 1935. She later married James Rawley who was a U.S. Army Colonel. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his meritorious service in occupied Japan. I have sold numerous other artifacts from this estate in the past few years on eaby including the original scripts to the films that Mamo Clark acted in. I currently have listed in my store the Japanese Dansu chest this piece came in and also the Ancient Hawaiian Spear brought to the US by the Clark family in 1933. Guaranteed genuine and authentic or return for your money back after inspection. Insurance is included in the postage price. This unique porcelain trinket box has the slogan“La liberte ou la mort” on the front. It has also a French drum and Fyfe and a hat. The slogan dates back to the end of the French Revolution. When the French people coined the phrase Liberte, Fraternite, Egalite. In the beginning it also said“ou la mort” or death) which was later dropped as it reminded too much of the reign of Terror. I do not know the mark on the bottom of the box, unfortunately. The piece was found in southern France and I am sure it is a French mark. It reminds us that the fight for freedom has been going on for a long time and at a terrible price. The box is in good shape with no cracks or crazing. There is some dirt on the inside where the porcelain meets the rim. No other defects. Measurements are: 2 ½” by 1 ¾” and 1 ¼” high. View our Page to learn a little more about us. Description A Late 19th C. Sevres Style Porcelain Patch Box. C. 1890 This lovely. Tiny box is deep cobalt blue with gilt decoration. A pale blue rondelle in the centre of the lid forms the background for an exquisitely detailed. Raised gilt painting of a basket of flowers. The rondelle is framed with a fine. Gold line surrounded by deep cobalt blue, banded with a wreath of sprigs of gilt leaves and a ring of raised dots around the rim. The lower edge of the lid is banded with a fine line of gilt. The bottom of the box is deep cobalt blue overlaid with ... moregilt bands. Top and bottom, framing a band of gilt leaves encircling the centre. Patch boxes were initially used in the 18th century to hold small pieces of black taffeta. Which were adhered to the face to show off the whiteness of the wearer's complexion. They also occasionally held rouge, and were carried by ladies as part of their dressing appointments. Often ornately decorated. They were given as valued gifts or love tokens. This box would make a delightful repository for a special ring or be a wonderful addition to a collection of minature boxes. Marked: On the bottom of the box witha blue.
