For your consideration is this Beautiful Antique Porcelain in Sevres' Style Jewelry Box. It has a lovely scalloped edge with a pale yellow background. The floral designs are in beautiful condition with the largest on the cover. A hanging basket of flowers adorned by a purple bow. The only flaw in this piece is the crack which runs from the top right side of the lid to the bottom right side. It is a clean crack and can be repaired. Other than that, this jewelry box is truly exquisite. The dots of white paint are raised in a harlequin pattern, with raised gold hand painted scroll work. This is an antique French dresser box. Oval and bombe' shaped. The Sevres style porcelain carries the mark of the studio as being"Chateau de Longpre" with the word" France" on the bottom. The strong cobalt blue color is accented by the gilded gold design and hand painted scene on top of the box and the floral interior. From my research I believe this studio work is from the early 1900's. There is very little written regarding Chateau de Longpre. The hand painted scene on the lid is that of a pair of lovers in a garden. The artist who signed the box is"A. Grisard" and the signature is located on the left side of the painted scene. The lid opens to reveal roses on the inside of the lid and bottom of the box. The lid is framed with the ormolu hinged on the back. The lid opens and closes fine. Size: 8" ... morewide 3" high 5" Dept Condition: The only wear I see is a slight wearing off on the gold painted accent edging. This is I believe from the item actually being opened and closed. There is some age and patina on part of the back hinge. This may or may not have been repaired in that area. But I cannot tell for sure. This box has been in our family 50+ years and was purchased at auction in the Middle East. It has been carefully tended since then. I see no other chips or damages in the porcelain. ANTIQUE SEVRES STYLE NOUVEAU MUCHA MAIDEN PORTRAIT ENAMEL SNUFF TRINKET BOX 1900
The first thing you should know about this rare and fabulous little box is that although it is listed in the porcelain category. In fact it has an enamel body which has been hand decorated in enamel paint and gold paste. Similarly decorated items were also made in porcelain and are sometimes confused with the more rarer enamel pieces. Secondly. Although it has what appears to be a genuine Sevres mark, I am attributing it as being Sevres-style, possibly the product of Edmé Samson et Cie and produced by the same talented artisans who worked for the Limoges factories that produced similar enamel work at the end of the 19 th century into the early part of the 20 th century. Small boxes such as these had many uses. They could hold pills/ pastilles. Trinkets, face patches, snuff, etc. I read somewhere that they also could have been used as ... morea presentation box for one or two chocolate bonbons in foiled cups, a small quantity of candied or crystallized fruit, sugared almonds or similar given as a courting gift. When the confection was consumed, the box was put to a new use. The lid is hand painted with a flamboyant portrait of a regal maiden done in the style of Alphonse Mucha(1860-1939) capturing the overlapping styles of the early Art Nouveau and later Belle Epoque eras. Alphonse Mucha was the Czech artist who most famously created the posters of the greatest actress of the time. Sarah Bernhardt portraying her in the most elaborate hairstyles and extravagant jeweled headdress pieces. The portrait is flanked by two vivid flowers and there is a halo effect of heavy floral textured gold paste surrounding her head. There are additional floral accents on the front of the base and on both the lid and base of the interior. The box is mounted in nicely textured ormolu with an“S” clasp. The lid is domed and the base isn't round but has 8 bulbous pillow panels. The piece is in remarkable shape for its age. There are no chips.
