Heel& toe are painted cobalt blue. Sole at heel is gold. Bottom of boot is painted black. Top of boot sports same floral/foliate design as sides. No marks present. I'm not exactly sure what this piece would have been used for- it looks like it would have been for snuff or possibly hat or dress pins. It is handpainted porcelain with a silver hinged lid. I am not sure if this is sterling or silverplate as it is tarn ished and I don't see any hallmarks. This piece is in excellent antique condition- no chips. Cracks, crazing or paint loss. The silver lid closes snugly and hinges are in good working order. I have not cleaned the tarnish off the silver portion but I think it would shine up nicely if you cho ose to do so. ~ Antique Snuff Box ~ A very lovely mid to late 1700s enamel on copper Bilston or Battersea snuff box with a handpainted portrait of a fancy lady wearing a large feather in her hair and holding a bird on her finger. The box is oval. And hinged with a clasp. It opens on the long end(rare to find) and reveals a mirror inside. There is some crazing/cracks on the top of the lid, and a small area of touch-up next to her left arm. All hard to see unless examined very closely. What a precious little box I have to present today. This amazing treasure is hand painted porcelain with a romantic scene of a couple chatting while the dog tends to the sheep. The underside is a farm setting with the windmill in the background. There is rub area to the bottom from"Centuries" of sitting on a surface for use and show. I was told by a jeweler that this piece is French and dates to 1732-1738. The dog(or wolf head in photo#10) mark on the bottom outer silver band is indicative of the Paris discharge mark for small items. I tried to research the second stamp on the inside bottom band(which looks like a face& crown) on the internet without success. The closest I could come to was a Swiss Mark? Late 18th or early 19th century Bilston. Battersea enameled pill or snuff box with a hot air ballooning scene on the top The box is in good shape overall with some cracking to the enamel on the bottom edges. The cover does not close down completely. The hot air balloon scene is hand painted in black on white porcelain ground with no damage which is surrounded by a metal frame& hinge with a pale yellow bottom. The inside is enameled in white which has some discoloration and some rough edges where the enamel meets the metal frame. There may have been some restoration to it. Here is a unique. Late 18th century patch or snuff box. It is hand painted and features a young man in a grey wig placing a rose in his companions hair. She is quite lovely and sits demurely beside him. Its' uncommon trefoil shape has brass mountings. The base also has a raised trefoil shape, painted gold. There is an underglaze blue mark dating from 1787- 1800. I had to loupe the mark as it is not the clearest. I have spent a lot of time, comparing both the French and German marks. It has an open circle at the top of the"X" and a horizontal line where the lines cross to form the"X" This appears to be correct and of the time period. It measures 2 3/8 x 1 1/2 x 1" approx. and is in good condition with no flaws that I can see. The hardware appears to be brass or bronze and the lid snaps shut tightly. Antique 18th Century France Porcelain Patch Snuff Pill Box w/ Music Theme Lyre
I have a acquired a collection of 6 different patch or snuff boxes. All are porcelain with metal fittings. Only one is dated. But they all appear to be from the same period. Please see my other listings for the rest. This one is rectangular and somewhat trunk shaped. It measures 1 5/8 inches by 1 1/4 inches by 1 3/8 inches tall. The top features a lyre with branches. Green leaf garlands go around the top and bottom sides. The inside of the lid says"Maitre de Chapelle" The inside of the bottom has 3 blue dots. The bottom is marked. But I can't tell what the company is. The clasp features a design of a horseshoe. Hammer, anvil, and large tongs- all blacksmith tools and product. Please see the photos for the condition. No chips. PARIS This is a Scarce& Desirable Maker Marked 1800's Antique Gentleman's/ Ladies fancy hand painted snuff box ~ ring/jewelry box ~ trinket box made by Sampson. Paris. In the late 18th to mid 19th century, nearly all men(and some ladies) used tobacco; and snuff(finely ground tobacco that was snorted) was a favorite, and was quite in vogue. These early snuff boxes are highly sought after, and are known in a variety of ... moredifferent shapes, sizes, materials and craftsmanship. This one is finely hand made porcelain over a copper base, and shows wonderful artisanship and craftsmanship, with good attention to detail. Most snuff boxes are a standard oval or rectangular shape. This fancy stylized shape is less common, and was more difficult to make and more expensive to purchase. This snuff box has a hand painted motif; and was obviously intended for a Love interest/ Friendship token for a Lady or Gentleman at the time. The hand painted stylized shaped domed top has the charming hand painted phrase" Accept this Trifle from a Friend, Whose love for Thee Will never End" with scroll border decoration. This piece probably dates to around 1825- 1850, and was intended as a gift and to declare one's interest to a special friend or love interest in an overt way during the Victorian era. The top has a fine 3 protrusion type hinge with a stop to keep the top open. A small lip in front, and the stylized top and bottom copper borders fit perfectly.
