This is a rare Battersea Bilston patch box inscribed“ A Present from the Iron Bridge” The Iron Bridge in Shropshire England was the first arch bridge made from cast iron. The bridge was opened in 1781 so the box must be sometime after that date. This box must be very rare as a Google search does not find another like it. It measures 1 5/8” x 1 3/8” x 7/8” tall. 18th CENTURY VEUVE PERRIN FRENCH ENAMEL PATCH/PILL BOX CHINESE DESIGN c1780 A very nice Veuve Perrin(Marseille) enamel patch/pill box measuring 3 1/4" x 2" x 1 1/2" The box is decorated in polychrome colors and on the lid is depicted a Chinaman building a fence surrounded by flowers and foliage and with birds flying overhead. The front and rear sides are decorated with exotic birds and the ends with flowers. The box is in very good condition both internally and externally; there is some slight age wear to the base and a small crack in the enamel at the right hand end below the mounting(please see photo) Monogram'VP' mark to base. Date would be c 1780. Claude Perrin born in Nevers on 20th April1696 settled in Marseille in 1733 where he died on 25th March 1748. Pierette Candelot. It became known as Veuve Perrin(Widow Perrin) She entered into a partnership agreement with Honore Savy, a member of the Academy of Painting& Sculpture in Marseille. The factory used the petit feu technique of decorating, which let it obtain through successive firings a variety of colors rivaling those of porcelain. As information. This 19th Century antique oval patch trinket box was made by the Samson Company of France. Edme Samson founded the House of Samson in 1845 to decorate porcelain. However it was Edme's son, Emile, who expanded the company to include reproduction of eighteenth-century English enamels. The Samson Edme et Cie Company continued to produce porcelain and pottery until 1969. The saleroom models were sold in 1979 by Christie's of London. Description This is a lovely 19th century antique Samson French enamel patch trinket box that measures 2.25" x 1.5. The design style is enamel on copper with a hinged lid and a beautiful green base and slightly domed lid. The lid has painted purple doves and a motto which reads. Amans Fidelle. I believe the translation is loving faithfully. However. I am not 100% sure of the translation. The lug on the back hinge and ribbed banding on the metal hinge. As well as the loose hand-painted nature of the lid identify this box as a nineteenth century creation. The French Samson enamel boxes have a lug on the back hinge; whereas the 18th Century Bilston English enamel patch boxes' hinges are straight across without the lug. Reference: Susan Benjamin. The box is lidded with a pink base which is in very nice condition with light crazing. The top is sturdy, but does have craquelure. Avery nice. Small and clean English enamel on copper patch box circa 1790(35 x 28mm) In virtually mint condition, just about the way it came from the store in 1790. The only blemishes are two very minor original firing marks. If you've ever longed for the"perfect" condition box- this is it. HOWEVER, there's one problem.it doesn't open.at least, I haven't been able to open it. You may do better than I, but I won't force it. It came to me in a large trade, from a very good collection, and that's the way I'm selling it. I would expect the inside to be as perfect as the outside. Here's a challenge for you. Good luck! Condition is great with no obvious wear to the enamel or the fine gold highlights. Under very close inspection you can see the enamel on the lid edge has some fine bubbling and a little white discoloration as made and probably typical for this period. The gold is worn off the exposed metal area from years of use and there is some light wear to the interior gold. Otherwise fine. Overall as clean as you will ever see a box of this type. This wonderful early oval shape Battersea or Bilston patch box is dark blue in color and decorated with two white birds and The Gift of a Friend in gilt on the lid. It has a mirror inside the lid with a white interior. It dates from the 18th Century and measures approximately ¾ of an inch tall by 2 inches by 1 + ¼ inches. This auction is for a vintage English enamel Battersea box. It's about 1 1/2 inches long. 1 1/4 inches wide, and 1 inch high. The lid has white doves and hearts on a cobalt blue background, and the words, A Present From Birmingham. THe words are worn but definitely there. Please use the zoom feature to look closely.
