The black enamel is inset in a chequer board design ... moreall over the box and squares left silver on the lid are engraved with two different dot patterns. It has two hinged lids, one large one where the snuff would be held and one smaller one which has a rough plate on the underside of the lid for striking the matches. Also on the side of this smaller lid is a cutter that passes over the hole in the side of the box cutting the cigar or cheroot. The silver is stamped with the French silver boars head along with a makers mark and it is in excellent condition with no damage, there are no dents, the two lids sit tight and flush to the base and there is minimum wear to the enamel which is rare as it usually wears from handling. It measures 50mm(2" by 25mm(1" by 10mm(0.3" deep. 18th. Century English enamel snuff box. Probably battersea. This snuff box has three scenes please view photos as description. The scenes are transfer. Dimension of this box are height 1 1/4" width 2 1/2" depth 1 5/8" Condition of the box is good for its age. The hinge works fine and the lid closes tight. There is fracturing of the enamel. ~ Antique Snuff Box ~ A very lovely mid to late 1700s enamel on copper Bilston or Battersea snuff box with a handpainted portrait of a fancy lady wearing a large feather in her hair and holding a bird on her finger. The box is oval. And hinged with a clasp. It opens on the long end(rare to find) and reveals a mirror inside. There is some crazing/cracks on the top of the lid, and a small area of touch-up next to her left arm. All hard to see unless examined very closely. Inside the box appears to be excellent condition, minor/light crazing under the bottom base as shown. Measures 1" tall by 2 1/8" long and 1 1/2" wide. A beautiful. What a precious little box I have to present today. This amazing treasure is hand painted porcelain with a romantic scene of a couple chatting while the dog tends to the sheep. The underside is a farm setting with the windmill in the background. There is rub area to the bottom from"Centuries" of sitting on a surface for use and show. I was told by a jeweler that this piece is French and dates to 1732-1738. The dog(or wolf head in photo#10) mark on the bottom outer silver band is indicative of the Paris discharge mark for small items. I tried to research the second stamp on the inside bottom band(which looks like a face& crown) on the internet without success. The closest I could come to was a Swiss Mark? Antique Battersea Bilston Enamel Pill Box, Snuff Box, Hot Air Balloon Scene
Late 18th or early 19th century Bilston. Battersea enameled pill or snuff box with a hot air ballooning scene on the top The box is in good shape overall with some cracking to the enamel on the bottom edges. The cover does not close down completely. The hot air balloon scene is hand painted in black on white porcelain ground with no damage which is surrounded by a metal frame& hinge with a pale yellow bottom. The inside is enameled in white which has some discoloration and some rough edges where the enamel meets the metal frame. There may have been some restoration to it. Antique Round Bilston Battersea Enamel Snuff Box Tavern Scene Floral Circa 1750 Description You are bidding on an antique Bilston Battersea round enamel snuffbox circa 1750. The snuffbox measures right at 2 inches in diameter by 1 inch in height. It has a hand-painted tavern scene to the top featuring two gentlemen in 18th-century dress drinking and smoking. The box has bowed out oval panels on four sides which feature colorful yellow and violet flowers set against a white background. The interior is gold gilt and it retains much of the original gilding. The hinge is good. No problems opening and the lid fits tight. It is further accented by fancy white and gold lines between panels and to base. Antique 18c 1700's Bilston Battersea King Colonial Soldiers Enamel Snuff Box Up for auction is an Antique 18th Century. 1700's, Copper Enamel Snuff Box attributed to Bilston and Battersea. Each outer panel contains a scene. There are colonial soldiers wearing green coats, some are on horseback and some on foot and some are carrying their rifles. It looks like there's a white flag or hanky tied to the end of one. The bottom has an image of a soldier and dog and one side has a doe and stag and another two rabbits. The top inner lid contains an image of a king or emporer. I'm not sure if this is perhaps King Louis of France? 18th Century Battersea Box This lovely trinket box is from the 1770's and is hand-painted enamel with a porcelain top. Suitors would give a lady they were interested in a small gift as a token of their affection. The box is oval with a domed lid. The bottom is pink and the top is white with a design in black that reads: Joined by Friendship. Crowned with Love" A design of two clasped hands with a dove flying over them is in the center. Up for bid is an absolutely beautiful antique snuff box. It was looked at by a professional. And although it could be Battersea, it is most likely Bilston or South Staffordshire from the 1780's. It is meant to mimic a travel trunk, and o n the inside of the lid. There is intentional webbing(not cracks or crazing) with a note. On the outside of the lid there is a badge that says. Script reads“Friendship Shall ever sacred be Between my worthy Friend& me. Pink enamel over copper base, white top/interior, mirrored lid, original patina metal trim with fully functioning hinge and front tiny finger knob to open/close. Measures 1 ⅝” wide, 1 ¼” deep, ⅞-1” high. This auction is for a vintage English enamel Battersea box. It's about 1 1/2 inches long. 1 1/4 inches wide, and 1 inch high. SEVRES OR FRENCH NOUVEAU PORTRAIT ENAMEL NOT PORCELAIN SNUFF TRINKET BOX SIGNED
The first thing you should know about this rare and fabulous little box is that although it is listed in the porcelain category. In fact it has an enamel over metal(probably copper)body which has been hand painted and accented with raised gold paste. Similarly decorated items were also made in porcelain and are sometimes confused with the more rarer enamel pieces. Secondly. The box has what appears to be a genuine Sevres mark(an“S” encircled by two interlaced Latinized“L's, also known as“double Louis” in honor of King Louis XV, the ardent patron of the Sevres manufactory) There are numerous eBay listings identifying similar pieces as being nanufactured by Sevres, but I am attributing it as being Sevres or French Sevres-style, and produced by the same talented artisans who worked for the Limoges factories that produced similar enamel work ... moreat the end of the 19 th century into the early part of the 20 th century. This box is signed" Hété. an artisan whose signature appears on French porcelain and enamel boxes and vases of similar design. Small boxes such as these had many uses. They could hold pills/ pastilles. Trinkets, face patches, snuff, etc. I read somewhere that they also could have been used as a presentation box for one or two chocolate bonbons in foiled cups, a small quantity of candied or crystallized fruit, sugared almonds or similar given as a courting gift. When the confection was consumed, the box was put to a new use. The lid is hand painted with a flamboyant portrait of a regal maiden done in the style of Alphonse Mucha(1860-1939) capturing the overlapping styles of the Art Nouveau and Belle Epoque eras. Alphonse Mucha was the Czech artist who most famously created the posters of the greatest actress of the time. Sarah Bernhardt portraying her in the most elaborate hairstyles and extravagant jeweled Byzantine-style headdress pieces such as the one worn by the maiden on this portrait. English Battersea blue enamel Adam Snuff box, 18th century!
I bought this lovely snuff box in London in the 1970s. And it has been the glory of my collection: of course I love the Robert Adam style, and this has it all! It is absolutely period Battersea, from probably the 1770s. Garlands of leaves and flowers, a neoclassical paterae, and"The Gift of a Friend" on the lid. The interior mirror is intact, with the expected spotting of almost 250 years. The condition is excellent, with just the usual wear for such an old piece. The ground color is a gorgeous soft blue. Please note that the black marks on the bottom in the photos are the residue from an old sticker, I neglected to wash it off, plus I left the dealer's sticker on. It measures approx 1 3/4 inches across, and stands just shy of an inch high. I am downsizing and sold the vitrine my boxes lived in, so they must go, sadly.
