Late 18th C/19th French Revolutionary Limoges style box: “La liberte ou la mort"
This unique porcelain trinket box has the slogan“La liberte ou la mort” on the front. It has also a French drum and Fyfe and a hat. The slogan dates back to the end of the French Revolution. When the French people coined the phrase Liberte, Fraternite, Egalite. In the beginning it also said“ou la mort” or death) which was later dropped as it reminded too much of the reign of Terror. I do not know the mark on the bottom of the box, unfortunately. The piece was found in southern France and I am sure it is a French mark. It reminds us that the fight for freedom has been going on for a long time and at a terrible price. The box is in good shape with no cracks or crazing. There is some dirt on the inside where the porcelain meets the rim. No other defects. Measurements are: 2 ½” by 1 ¾” and 1 ¼” high. Antique French Limoges Style Patch Box: this patch box was found in the Paris region of France. It is a small porcelain box with a Napoleonic gold eagle on the lid and the classic torch and quiver on the front. There is a blue under-glaze mark on the bottom. The inside has small gold leaves painted on the underside of the lid and the bottom. The bronze hinge and closure are sound and in good working order. Overall condition is excellent with no chips cracks or crazing. Patch box: small. Antique Limoges Style Hand Painted Porcelain Trinket Boxes w Gold Enamel No Chip
Here is a pair of antique/ vintage hand painted fine porcelain lidded trinket boxes with scalloped design and gold enamel detail and unique scroll work handles in Excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or dings. These are matching design and maker pair, one larger that's 4" in diam. and 3 3/4" tall and one smaller that is 3" in diam. and 3 1/4" tall. These are very detailed pieces and have great color. They are definitely old but there is no maker mark that I could find. The older Lamoges Style design and fine gold enamel detail remind me of older French or German Pieces, especially with the fluted edge on bottom of piece. Anyways these are beautiful delicate matching porcelain pieces in excellent condition, again, No chips or dings or cracks, showing minimal wear aside from normal gold enamel wear of lid handles, ... moremore so on smaller box lid.
