Here is a unique. Late 18th century patch or snuff box. It is hand painted and features a young man in a grey wig placing a rose in his companions hair. She is quite lovely and sits demurely beside him. Its' uncommon trefoil shape has brass mountings. The base also has a raised trefoil shape, painted gold. There is an underglaze blue mark dating from 1787- 1800. I had to loupe the mark as it is not the clearest. I have spent a lot of time, comparing both the French and German marks. It has an open circle at the top of the"X" and a horizontal line where the lines cross to form the"X" This appears to be correct and of the time period. Possibly French. Not sure of the maker on this lovely antique snuff box/patch box. There is a maker's name stamped into the porcelain, can be seen in the photo when held up to the light. I can't read it for sure. This is all handpainted with a nice rural scene on the lid, tiny floral designs on the remainder of the body both inside and out, gilded base. It measures 2 3/8 x 1 1/2 x 1" approx. and is in good condition with no flaws that I can see. The hardware appears to be brass or bronze and the lid snaps shut tightly. On the underside is an X with the letters A. W. M. R. as the mark, which was applied by hand. Antique 18th Century France Porcelain Patch Snuff Pill Box w/ Music Theme Lyre
I have a acquired a collection of 6 different patch or snuff boxes. All are porcelain with metal fittings. Only one is dated. But they all appear to be from the same period. Please see my other listings for the rest. This one is rectangular and somewhat trunk shaped. It measures 1 5/8 inches by 1 1/4 inches by 1 3/8 inches tall. The top features a lyre with branches. Green leaf garlands go around the top and bottom sides. The inside of the lid says"Maitre de Chapelle" The inside of the bottom has 3 blue dots. The bottom is marked. But I can't tell what the company is. The clasp features a design of a horseshoe. Hammer, anvil, and large tongs- all blacksmith tools and product. Please see the photos for the condition. No chips. Script reads“Friendship Shall ever sacred be Between my worthy Friend& me. Pink enamel over copper base, white top/interior, mirrored lid, original patina metal trim with fully functioning hinge and front tiny finger knob to open/close. Measures 1 ⅝” wide, 1 ¼” deep, ⅞-1” high. Overall very nice condition for its age- mirror has foxing, typical wear to enamel base from use, a few enamel cracks(see photos) no deep/significant cracks or chips. This auction is for a vintage English enamel Battersea box. It's about 1 1/2 inches long. 1 1/4 inches wide, and 1 inch high. The lid has white doves and hearts on a cobalt blue background, and the words, A Present From Birmingham. THe words are worn but definitely there. Please use the zoom feature to look closely.
