The decoration has two Males in traditional dress. One on each face of the vase(see small insert photos to left of main photo to see close up of each) Gilt/gold is applied in the design of the clothing. A Lion Dog/Dog of Foo is situated on either side of the shoulder of the vase and has a gilt/gold finish in a dull'old' gold. Each Lion Dog carries a gilt/gold ring in its mouth. Satsuma pottery was made in and around Kagoshima in Kyushu Island Japan in the latter part of the 19th century and through to the early 1900s The first historical kilns in Kyushu island were established by Korean potters in the late 16th century. These first wares were stone wares. A typical piece if Satsuma pottery will be of yellowish. Earthenware and, usually decorated with Japanese Artisan figures, landscapes or sometimes dragons. The designs also feature a form of decoration called‘Moriage’ which is a term used to describe the use of raised enamel piped like cake icing. Markings: A blue. Hand written mark to the base(see photo) Condition: Very good condition given its age but has a small production flaw on the internal neck section. Very fine glaze crazing commensurate with age and some rub to the high points to the gilt decoration on the shoulder of the vase. Age: Meiji period- Mid 19th Century. Size: The height is approximately 23.5ms(9.25 inches) and approximately 10.5cms(just over 4 inches) diameter at the fullest point in the body. About 2-1/2 tall box with lid and bottom triple foot burnished in gold, hand painted, decorated in a nicely done conventional a"Floral and Leaves" motif& borders with geometric lines smartly done. Lightly glazed, trimmed and embed with gold, black outline drawn, filled and raised enameled painted with beautiful light colors in white, blues, reds, orange, lavenders, yellows and greens.
