ANTIQUE BOOK MASS GEN HOSPITAL BOSTON INSANE ASYLUM CIVIL WAR GENERAL LAFAYETTE
This book is titled Extracts from MASS General Hospital 1810-1851. The book is a record of sorts of all the various meetings. Proposals, patients, etc. that occurred during this time period. There are a few references to the Civil War, including mention of a"wooden leg fund" to help wounded soldiers. Among other things, there are mentions for the need of a"Lunatic" or"Insane" asylum in the Boston area. There are many names and references. General Lafayette is mentioned as having visited with his son. Also mentioned are Col Thomas Perkins, Captain Nathaniel Fletcher, and Gen. Appleton. There is a gift inscription on one of the early interior pages: To Gen. F.H. Appleton with the compliments of Francis Blake, 12 December 1902. As noted above, the pages are loose, most unattached from the spine. The pages are somewhat ... morebrittle on the edges, but are cream to off-white in color with dark, highly legible text. The LOW lighting conditions when I took the pictures give them the yellow tint. The pages are not yellow in person. Also, you can see the shadows from the camera on the pages; the dark areas are not stains. Offered with no reserve is this rare catalog of“Surgical instruments. Physicians Supplies and Hospital Furnishings” by the A. S. Aloe Company of St. Louis. Missouri. If you collect antique medical instruments this would be an invaluable reference. From scalpels to examination tables or amputation saws. It has it all! The illustrations are excellent. Some of the types of instruments include general operating, dissecting and post mortem, ophthalmic, aural, nasal, alimentary, thoracic, hernial, gynecological, phlebotomy, transfusion, dermic, anthropometric, office furniture, prosthetic, trusses, abdominal supporters, invalid furnishings, apparatus for human restraint, etc. The book measures 7 by 10 inches and is 1071 pages in length. I can not find an exact publication date but it says it is the sixth edition. By the style of the illustrations, ... moreit looks 1880s or 1890s. There are advertisements for other companies in the back of the book. One of these advertisements states that the company was incorporated in 1887 so it would have to be after that date. It is a great reference book for the doctor instrument collector. Be sure to look at all twelve photos. Condition of the book is poor because the spine is extremely loose. It’s hanging on by a thread! The first three leafs have become unattached. There are no missing pages but the spine will need some attention. Other than that.
