Rare Victor Electric violet ray machine circa 1900 quack medical Tesla coil
Up for auction is a very rare and early Victor Electric violet ray machine. Let me start off by saying this is sold for display ONLY. This is a very dangerous device and whatever you do with this you do at your own risk. There are plenty of ways to be killed by this machine since its makers had no concern for safety. As you can see, it has seen better days, but I did run it for about 2 seconds and I got a ½ inch spark between the electrodes at the top, but working condition is not guaranteed and I don’t plan on firing it up again. All this needs to be a nice display item is a fresh coat of paint and some polishing. It was designed to run on 110 or 104 volts AC or DC(the previous owner unhooked the 104 volt terminal internally) and the power is applied to the un-insulated terminals on the base. Touching these or any other metal parts ... morewhile power is applied will probably kill you so please don’t! Now for the bad news: There is no continuity between the electrodes unfortunately(not sure if that was the case before I fired it up) So there is a break somewhere in the secondary(probably in the wire going to the top part) The wire exiting from the side is present but does not go to the terminal anymore(you will need to extend and reconnect it) However the primary is still good and measures 52 ohms. The paint on the base flakes off with just a gentle touch, so expect more of it to be missing when it arrives. I have removed the electrodes for safe shipping so look for them in the package. The pictures are very much a part of the description, so please examine them closely before bidding. This machine is sold as-is for display only(no returns! You are bidding on an antique Shelton violet ray quack machine. It includes probes. None of the three are broken and I got two to light up purple. There is a medal cap which one appears to be cracked but I think it could be repaired. Original box is not in great condition, the inside is better then the outside with purple material. it's age, though it does show signs of use, wear. Bakelite violet wand that plugs in and has original cloth wiring are all in very good to excellent condition for their age. This unit does power up and throws a nice spark. In some of the pictures you can see a small ark or spark coming off the different glass tubes. Those are going to my fingers or hand that you can't see very well. Wow I hate to sell this thing. What a kooky. Crazy cool piece of medical equipment. Seems to work exactly as intended. I was dumb enough to put it near my skin and sure enough little electrical impulses jumped from the machine to my arm. It comes on and the purple light runs up the tubes. It shows 6 electrodes in the instructions but there is only the throat electrode and the comb electrode included. I don't think they were ever 6 electrodes in this set because there is only 1 missing hole which would be for the general electrode. This thing is crazy cool I love it. This fascinating antique medical device comes in its original brown hard case with three glass wand attachments snugly held into place by metal spring clamps. IT IS IN WORKING CONDITION. And in its original case. There are 2 metal hollow rods, and 14 glass wands, all of which are UNUSUAL, and are intact and working. They produce a violet color, with an electrical sting and sound, when held to the skin. The small wand with two metal ends, sits in the holder loosely, but does produce an orange color. Included in the wands is the RARE Ozone Inhalator wand in 3 pieces. The top piece is attached to the one below it, with a rubber hose which has cracked from age, but the glass pieces are intact. Also the cork wrap around at the middle piece is split and taped. There are 16 metal clips in the case that hold the wands. Three of ... morethe clips have one side broken off, but I have the pieces, and perhaps they can be spot soldered. There also is a small piece of paper with German words, and a little 1" gass tube, see photo 4. The electrical box is all intact and works well, with 110 or 220 volts.The cords are good. At that time many households had these devices to cure all sorts of ailments. There was little it could not be used for but sadly there were few miracles from it. But a rather gigantic placebo effect. And it is easy to see why. It is magic and for 1920s really futuristic. The device was made by the 100,000s and some were very fancy with many attachments. The fancy ones were mostly were used by the Doctors and traveling Practitioners who believed this device cured everything from arthritis to hair loss. Today we call them all Quacks. BEST Antique QUACK FETISH MEDICAL Violet Ray DELUXE MODEL - 21 WAND ATTACHMENTS!
We have seen quite a few of these violet ray type machines over the years. But this is without question the most elaborate we've encountered. It has no less than 21 wand attachments. In its day, this was likely the most expensive deluxe model on the market- it came out of a very wealthy historic home here in the city of Halifax. This machine is in good working order. Please note that it will require a $2 plug before you can put it to safe use. We temporarily wired it up with an extension cord plug only to show that it works. A few of the smaller attachments do not seem to work. Or perhaps we were not using them properly(maybe they are supposed to be used in conjunction with other pieces) Regardless, please note that it's being sold"as is" Most of the attachments had a purple glow when inserted into the wand. There are some ... morevery bizarre and likely quite rare glass attachments with this kit. There is a switch to choose either 100-125v, or 200-250v. There is a removable screw which, in place, has locked the switch into the 200-250v selection. Photo 4 shows the plug for the electrical source. It does not work with American receptacles. There is no adapter. Is 200-250v for European systems? Is 100-125v for the US? I don't know. If so, could you change the plug? I don't know. I have another machine, and used it to check the attachments. The item is very old and there is some wear on the power cord. So use it at your own risk. The wood case is missing the leather handle and the box has a few nicks, scrapes and gouges giving it an old rustic look as can be seen in the photos. The lining in the case looks like it was coming loose, so someone tacked it down with several tacks. I bought this item at an estate sale, so item is sold as is. This is a vintage Elco Lindstrom& Co. Violet Ray Quack Medicine Health Generator. It comes in an original wooden box carrying case. For the most part it appears to be in very good shape but it appears that it may be incomplete. In my photos you see 5 glass tube attachments( one of these is broken) I believe originally there were 6 glass attachments. Please see my photos for total inventory of parts. Other things may be missing. The blue lightbulb glass is mostly unattached from it's threads.
