1859 Old Antique Leather Pre Civil War Medical Book Anatomy Surgery Human Body
A System Of Human Anatomy by Erasmus Wilson Published by Blanchard and Lea. 1859. Containing 616 pages. Illustrated with over 397 fine medical engravings. Very good condition. Tight binding. Strong hinges. Light wear to covers. A nice speciman. Please enjoy the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. Wilson was born in London. Studied at Dartford Grammar School before St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, and at Aberdeen, and early in life became known as a skillful surgeon and dissector. It was his sympathy with the poor of London and a suggestion from Mr. Thomas Wakley of The Lancet. The cases of scrofula, anemia, and blood-poisoning which he saw made him set to work to alleviate the suffering of persons so afflicted, ... moreand he quickly established a reputation for treating this class of patients. It was said that he treated the rich by ordering them to give up luxuries; the poor by prescribing for them proper nourishment, which was often provided out of his own pocket. In the opinion of one of his biographers, we owe to Wilson in great measure the habit of the daily bath, and he helped very much to bring the Turkish bath into use in Great Britain, and in the process writing a number of works on spas, baths and thermo-therapy, all of which overlap in their content. Indeed his works on spas. Baths, and thermo-therapy were directly related to his work on the health of skin. His earliest such works on this topic outlined the relationship between various applications of water, vapour baths, the action of heat and cold through such media on the action of the skin, and the relationship between this and health in general.4] Moreover, his works had a direct impact on the hydrotherapy movement of the time(then known as hydropathy) and the overlapping sanitary reform movement. He applauded the establishment of Public Baths and Wash-houses, as“amongst the noblest of the institutions…as they are one of th

Rare Civil War Era Medical Amputation Surical Tools -- RARE --Set of Four
This rare set of four cauterizing tools was primarily used during the Civil War in the amputation of limbs. The unusual tips are carved from what appears to be translucent agate. Each tool has a long brass furl and a wood handle. It is my understanding the tips were made of stone so that when the tool was heated the flesh would not stick. This set is the only one I have ever seen and what information I have has come from various collectors. If anyone with knowledge would like to share some additional information it would be appreciated. No reserve. Good luck bidding!
Antique Medical surgical amputation knife blade scalpel Civil War era
Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I would guess this would be civil war but.it does not have a wooden handle. The handle looks. Feels like plastic.probably Bakelite. The stamp on the blade says Emerig Phila The box says W.H. Walmsley The knife and box definitely go together.to the point that the knife only fits in one way. Can not be flipped vertically. Box is velvet lined. That is all I know.not much If you have more information on this item. I would appreciate it if you would drop me an email with your thoughts. This item is in really nice condition for its age. Still sharp and the velvet is intact and in good condition. The case shows wear and tear. Readers have been kind enough to verify that ... morethis is indeed an amputation knife from around the Civil War era and suggest that the handle is ebony)

Civil War Era Medical Surgical Bullet Puller Extractor
These ARE NOT"Civil War Bullet Extractors" These are bar tongs for making your martinis. Seriously. Google"olive tongs" and BE AMAZED! They will not fit in a bullet wound from that time. Much less would they then open up enough inside to get a bullet out. Look how long they are. How the hell do you think that is long enough to get a bullet out! They aren't even good at picking up olives WHICH THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR. These were made in the 1970s. Not the 1870s. If someone is selling these to you as"Civil War Bullet Extractors" they are either stupid or cheating you. or both. Who knows. Stop the madness. and wasting your money!

The knife is stamped with the makers name' LENTZ& SONS' The knife has a total length of 12 inches with a long slender double edged blade length of 7 3/4 inch. Appears to be a black ebony wood checkered handle 4 1/4 inches long 1/2 inch wide. I would rate this in very good condition considering it's age. Woodward, Assistant Surgeon, U. S. Army. Catalogue of the Microscopical Section. By Brevet Major Edward Curtis, Assistant Surgeon. It was published by the Government Printing Office in Washington in 1866-1867. These three catalogues(all in one) of the surgical. The entries include a brief summary of the context in which the injury or illness leading ... moreto death or amputation occurred. Virtually all of the specimens resulted from the Civil War. Several dramatic woodcut illustrations compliment the text which is arranged by subject. The surgical section contains descriptions of 4,719 surgical specimens varying from cranium to tumors that graphically detail the wounds suffered by thousands of soldiers during the Civil War. The attending physician's name is listed with each case. This scarce volume is of major historical importance because it is the first American publication that actually gives an idea of the number and type of photographs taken by or for Army physicians during the Civil War. The book lists 372 six by six inch or larger format photographs of surgical cases and 49 surgical(pathologic) specimens as well as 1,064 cartes de visit photographs of surgical cases and 100 of surgical specimens. More Americans(Confederate and Union) died in the Civil War than any other conflict in American history. Medical Utensil Solid Brass Instrument Civil War
Early medical instrument about 8 inches long. It is solid brass and quite heavy for it's size. Construction connecting the 2 halves is a large bulky peened over brass rivot. The ends have five very coarse ridges to help hold things. The ridges continue down 1 full inch from the tips. I am not sure of the age. I think the word to describe it would be early. Around the turn of the century, and not vintage. It might be civil war era or earlier. I'm not sure. It is not nickel plated. The white you see at intersection is surface corrosion that will easily clean off. I did not clean.Polish, nor dip this. It is as I found it.

Set 2 Antique c1860's Civil War Era Hey's Saws Surgical Medical Trepanation
Set 2 Antique c1860's Civil War Era Hey's Saws Surgical Medical Trepanation For your consideration today is this set of two antique Hay's surgical saws. They were invented by and named after surgeon William Hay who lived from the mid 1700's to the early 1800's. These particular instruments were used in trephine operations on the skull to reduce fractures of bones of the skull. They were frequently found in a doctor's surgical kit during the Civil War. Both pieces are in pretty decent condition for their age. The saw with the blue tinted blade has some minor rusting on the blade itself. But all of the teeth are straight and sharp. There is also some rust buildup on the handle under the ebony portion. It has caused some minor splitting on the end. I believe that you could probably remove the wood and clean up the rust ... moreif so inclined. The middle of the handle also has 3 letters stamped into it, which I believe to be the initials of the owner. The other saw has some rust spots on the head, but the teeth are all straight and sharp as well. The handle appears to have been subject to liquid damage at one time as there is some damage to the wood portion as well as some rust under the wood. The neck of the handle is also marked with"28" but I do not know if it is original. Overall these are two very nice pieces to add to your collection! Please email us with any questions. 19th Century Pre Civil War Trepanning Medical Surgical Set, Madeira Philadelphia
Wife and I have had this set for some time. 9 7/8 x6 1/2 x 1 7/8 It was purchased in the Philadelphia area about 15 years ago. Not much is known by me about its history but Madeira is supposed to be a medical manufacturer in Philadelphia. This much I was told when it was purchased. I do not know and do not have the reference material to fact check this. There are two trepans of different sizes-some corrosion but checkering in excellent. A scalpel, a lifting tool, a brush and a Hey saw. My wife was in medical school at the time and this seemed a nice gift. At this time it does not fit in with what we collect and it has been carefully stored for all this time. The lock works and it is original as received. It has not been polished, cleaned or altered to the best of my knowledge. I would say this set was unused. It is really a beautiful to look ... moreat and a little gruesome! Assume nothing, Do your research, ASK your QUESTIONS and I will do my best to answer them. If you want additional images I can send them to you via email. I prefer CONUS shipment please. Payment within 3 days of auction end. I will be traveling for a week starting on the 16th but that won't affect shipping. Thanks for looking and all the best.

Rare Footed ANTIQUE Civil War ERA Wooden HEADREST Neck Rest BARBER MEDICAL
Rare Standing ANTIQUE Civil War ERA Wooden HEADREST Neck Rest BARBER MEDICAL, Rare Standing ANTIQUE Civil War ERA Wooden HEADREST Neck Rest BARBER MEDICAL-good antique condition. It is made of wood and covered with an old paisley like fabric- not sure if cotton or some other type of fabric. It has three wooden turned feet and the fabric is attached via old upholstery tacks. We purchased this many years ago and have never been able to find another one- we are not sure what it was used for but it appears to be some form of headrest or neck rest and it could have a medical attribution or belonged to a barber. Or we also thought it might have had something to do with lace making. We have never listed it or put it out for sale previously as we didn't know how to describe it. If someone knows what it is please let us know so we can revise the ... moredescription. Anyway it is a really neat piece and has a nice age and neat patina. It measures approx 9.5" long at longest part- 4.25- 4.5" tall and 5" wide. All Antique/Vintage items are sold as is as found as they are used and as such will show age and use.
