I didn’t do that, and I’ll bet you didn’t either, but this 70-year-old doctor’s bag did. It was made in Cincinnati, and that’s where I found it. Now I don’t know where it’s actually been. Of course, but something tells me it has remained in such nice shape because it was happy in Ohio. It is 16 ½” by 8 ½” by 13” tall. Not counting the handles. It weighs 7 lbs. empty– no tools, no dope, no shot needles. When I rescued it. It was covered with dust, but it was stored properly otherwise. The leather is as strong and supple as ever. You’ll note some scuffing here and there but nothing I’d call damage. I just wiped it down. If you want to touch it up a little. It will be good as new. Actually, I wouldn’t do a thing. Fiddling with old things can knock the charm right off. I don’t have a key. But the latch works perfectly. It snaps closed easily and opens with gusto. Lots more pictures follow. Vintage Leather Doctors or Lawyers Bag Case Satchel WITH KEY DR MD
T his is a Vintage Brown Doctors bag with lock and key. This vintage bag measures 16" by 6 1/2" and stands about 11 1/2 inches tall with the bag closed and 12 inches tall with the bag in the open position. The only markings I can find are"Swampy" above lock under leather locking tab when closed& Top Grain Cowhide" the number"16" stamped on the bottom(all can be seen in pictures) It has 4 round brass feet on the bottom which are in good condition. It has a nice leather handle and a brass latch which is in good condition& lock and key work great. The outside has a few minor scuffs. But there are no holes or tears in the leather and the stitching is in good condition except tears at the metal opening as seen in pictures. The inside liner is in great condition. But it opens and closes easily with a sliding mechanism. Also, the clasp is adjustable. It can be latched in three different positions. It is stamped in the bottom: SEGESSMAN LEATHER PRODUCTS. INC. The stitching has broken loose on one of the bottom edges as shown. T he bag has an inner liner and could use a cleaning. I believe this is made of a man made ma terials with a leather handle. This is an antique brown pebbled leather briefcase/Dr's bag/satchel in very good condition for it's age and a wonderful old patina! It's made by Leathercraft. Chicago, tag inside. The single leather handle is intact. The brass latch works and holds it closed. No key. It has a few areas of slight deterioration on the edges where the surface has eroded, but nothing major. There are no holes, splits or cracks. It is hinged, it opens and closes and has 3 compartments inside, no damage inside. The leather is kind of stiff. A early antique doctors medical bag dating late 19thc to the very early 1900's. This bag is completely original and ready to add to your medical collection. The cowhide bag has a naturally aged warm dark patina with naturally aged used ware the kind you expect to find in an item this old considering what it was used for. Full of medical equipment and medicine carried from home& office while traveling to take care of patients, in Iowa. Although not without natural occuring imperfections such as normal usage ware, as slight rubs& scuffs, surface scratches. The 2 sides open and come together at the top, there is one small worn hole near side corner where the side bumps out when open less than a 1/2" very nice bag considering it's age. Free of any major damage, no mold or mildew, no frame damage. The hardware is unpolished ... moreand has a naturally aged patina, a little tarnish. The body& surface are firm and measures 18 1/4" across the bottom by 8 1/2" wide and 11" tall. The inside beige/red/green flower cloth lining has a soft feel with one side snap. It closes at the top with three metal fasteners. All the fasteners work. Unfortunately. The handle is missing. The inside of the bag is made of leather as well. It has a few pockets and there are contents inside the bag; a few old gauze pads, some other misc. medical items, a rag. I did not remove the rag or any contents.
