Up for auction is a unusual Violet Ray Machine. This fascinating piece of medical history was used to"shock" yourself into health. As you can tell from the photos the machine does still work(my wife thinks I am crazy but I did try the machine and it does shock you! As you can tell the early wiring should be replaced if you are going to use it and also the case is starting to show its age with some wear on the corners and the handle is missing. This is a beautifully working powerful VINTAGE VIOLET RAY- WAND. It s a Renulife. Which is one of the best, and probably made in the 1920s. At that time many households had these devices to cure all sorts of ailments. There was little it could not be used for but sadly there were few miracles from it. But a rather gigantic placebo effect. And it is easy to see why. It is magic and for 1920s really futuristic. The device was made by the 100,000s and some were very fancy with many attachments. The fancy ones were mostly were used by the Doctors and traveling Practitioners who believed this device cured everything from arthritis to hair loss. Today we call them all Quacks. Now I would like to apologize to the modern day"Quacks" who believe these devices still offer some medical benefits. They might be right. It certainly is a dynamic ... moreforce. We have seen quite a few of these violet ray type machines over the years. But this is without question the most elaborate we've encountered. It has no less than 21 wand attachments. In its day, this was likely the most expensive deluxe model on the market- it came out of a very wealthy historic home here in the city of Halifax. This machine is in good working order. Please note that it will require a $2 plug before you can put it to safe use. We temporarily wired it up with an extension cord plug only to show that it works. A few of the smaller attachments do not seem to work. Or perhaps we were not using them properly(maybe they are supposed to be used in conjunction with other pieces) Regardless, please note that it's being sold"as is" Most of the attachments had a purple glow when inserted into the wand. Vintage Master Violet Ray Quack Antique Medical Device Shock Therapy -EC
Vintage example of early 1900's quack electroshock therapy device. We did turn on this device and when the lights were off the glass glowed purple. A little scary to use on your body since it started to cause my cell to go haywire. Box is in stressed condition with corners ripped. A typical violet ray device consisted of an ungrounded electrical control box that controlled the interrupter and which housed the magneto coil. And an attached bakelite or other handle housing which contained the high voltage coil and an insertion port for attachments. Handblown Glass evacuated tubes of varying shapes and for different therapeutic uses could be inserted into the bakelite handle to apply the resulting current to different parts of the body. We had a good ol time giving everyone in the family a little shock. You just plug it in and turn the knob on the bottom until it comes on. These date to around the 1920's and were considered a cure all and used on a number of ailments including pain relief. Arthritis, and they even made claims it helped build muscles and grow long luxurious hair. As you can see this is in rough shape. It's kind of filthy and looks like it was exposed to mold at some point. The case it's in has a lot wear and the wand itself has wear. I am offering the Energex Electric Quack Medical Devise. The case is in good condition. The leather handle is intact and the metal hinges to close it work well, the green fabric lining is bright and clean, it has a red ribbon with ENERGEX in gold across the top corner, the case measures 14 1/2 x 9 x 3 1/4 inches. The case has places for 5 attachments. But there are only 3 attachments, and one doesn't have a slot that fits it. There is a metal attachment and two glass attachments. The devise has a label ENERGEX Type H F and 30 volts and 120 watts AC or DC. On the end is a knob that turns and PAT. PENDING BD# 10. The heavy duty cord and plug are in good condition. Violet ray therapy was considered very beneficial for almost any ill. This machine works well. Producing a high frequency/high voltage discharge at the electrode. The power level is controlled by a knob in the case. The glass electrode produces a wonderful and eerie violet glow. Included in this set is one“pancake” glass electrode. And original paperwork. The bakelite electrode is in excellent condition. As is the case and controls, and the AC power cord is in excellent condition as well. The cord from the power supply to the electrode is in poor condition and needs to be replaced(see photo 11) Which would be an easy fix. Currently. The cord is ... morecracking and fraying, and is therefore very unsafe, so the cord should be replaced before attempting to power up the machine. Antique 1919 Beasley Eastman Renulife Violet Ray Medical Device Quack Medicine
This old medical device is a Violet Ray appliance used to"treat" all types of ailments. This is a Beasley-Eastman model called Renulife. Has two dials. One for internal and external use, and one dial regulates the intensity. Comes with 7 attachments. One attachment is broken at the tip, see picture. This model is in great condition for its age. Works perfectly, with little signs of wear. Cords are in excellent condition, showing no wear or fraying. All attachments are also in good shape, except the one described. Box is intact, but shows wear in areas. Top is missing some of the layering, and is also worn on edges. Lock still functions as should. Handle also shows wear.
