Original antique Ordnance Survey (Mudge) 1811 - 1882 Hampshire Wiltshire Dorset
Originally surveyed by Lt Col Mudge and his team in 1811. This map has railways incorporated up to 1879 and was electroyped in 1882. Originally published like a book between cloth covered boards with marbled paper endpapers, the boards are in poor condition and the backstrip is completely missing. One board is completely detached. The map is printed on paper in sections which is then backed with canvas that can be folded. The unfolded map measures a huge 62" x 47" The map itself is in reasonable condition. There are a few ink spots(photographed below) and some of the paper sheets are just beginning to peel away at the corners from the canvas(nothing a little bit of tlc wouldn't sort out) There is a little bit of staining on the back of the canvas(see photo) which doesn't appear to come through on the front of the map although ... morethere are some unrelated light brown marks here and there. The Hag ue between 1747& 1780. Charles-Marie La Condamine(1701- 1774) was a French mathematician and surveyor who took part in an expedition to South America to measure a degree of latitude. La Condamine was born in Paris. He was trained for the military profession. But turned his attention to science and geographical exploration. After taking part in a scientific expedition in the Levant(1731) he became a member with Louis Godin and Pierre Bouguer of the expedition sent to Peru in 1735 to determine the length of a degree of the meridian in the neighborhood of the equator. His associations with his principals were unhappy; the expedition was beset by many difficulties. And finally La Condamine separated from the rest and made his way from Quito down the Amazon, ultimately reaching Cayenne. His was the first scientific exploration of the Amazon. Vintage David White Survey compass-antique NICE MUST C NO RESERVE
is a vintage compass for surveying equipment. It is marked on the front DAVID WHITE CO. MILWAUKEE. WIS. MADE IN U.S.A. It is 3 inches in diameter. The prongs on the back are an inch high. There is small lever on the side so the needle can be locked down. The inside of the cardboard box gives instructions to mount the compass over the level vial housing so that the letter S is nearest the eyepiece end of the telescope. It then explains why the E and W are opposite what they are on a normal compass.box is ruff and missing the top however even that does not take away from this piece.I've tried researching this to figure out what it's made of and have only found possibilities, it's heavy weighing almost 3/4 of a lb. Both maps are dated 1916 and titled Reconnaissance Map Of Yukon Koyukuk Region Alaska. These maps were produced by the United States Geological Survey. These maps are both marked Bulletin 631 with one being Plate 1 and the other being Plate II. One map shows the geological deposits. These maps are both fully complete but they are rather fragile and have separation on the fold lines in places. Both maps have some damp staining. Antique Dietzgen Transit For Land Road Survey Super Nice Old Instrument
Here is a super nice all intact transit ready for use or display. This old Dietzgen transit has sat in its original wood case for many years in an office environment. The transit may need a simple calibration for use. All the bubble levelings are excellent. There are a few adjusting tools in the leather pocket on the interior of the case. And there is a brass plate for possibly mounting the transit on a different surface. There is a brass sun shade too for the telescopic objective. The wood case is a little rough but tight for transport of the transit and has metal corner feet. It needs a new handle. The case with transit is 17 inches tall, 14 inches across and 9 inches deep, and it weighs 29 pounds unpackaged. A wonderful Antique Vintage Surveyor Instrument. Good solid Wood legs. The survey transit is made of Brass and aluminum. It is marked Bostrom-Brady MFG. Atlanta. GA. There are leveling screws and a brass bubble level on the Survey Transit and the focus function of the transit is working too. The Tripod Stand is 58 inches without the level. This is another fantastic RARE Antique Map from our Father's Collection. I am not a map expert. But did do some internet research. This map appears rare as I could not find another. Only ones in archives or reproductions. In reading about A.D. Bache I found that his maps/surveys were a very important part leading up to the Civil War. This specific Map of Charleston Harbor(Ft. Sumpter) etc. is mentioned as possibly the most important survey done of coastal South Carolina& Georgia prior to Civil war. DISCUSSION: Alfred Stevens[1817-75] was an important Victorian designer and artist. Whose dramatic Neo-Renaissance figures could be found adorning massive outdoor monuments or cast as brass firedogs. He was employed by H.E. Hoole& Co. to design grates, stoves, fenders and andirons for the Great Exhibition, and also designed for other Sheffield manufactories, producing those types of items, as well as candlesticks. W. L. E. Gurley surveying transit. This is in the original wood box. I believe this is from around 1920-1930 era. There is one small level that is broke and I have shown this in my pictures. Antique Vintage Rand McNally New Ideal State County Survey Atlas Missouri 1913
In& Dated Antiques For your consideration is this really neat old Rand McNally& Co.s New Ideal State& County Survey and Atlas. The book is a dark green. With fabric covered hardback binding. The fabric has some issues, with stains and wear and the spine is not intact, though most of the pages still are. We believe all of the pages, including all colored maps remain in the book. This is an atlas that focuses on the state of Missouri, with an additional focus on Livingston County. The book was copyrighted in 1913 and its initial price was $5.00. The book is 11 5/8" x 14 3/8, has 154+ pages, and at least two fold out maps, one of Missouri, one of the world. The colors on the maps are still beautifully bright and the maps are in very good condition, with only some wear on some edges and the folded maps have some extra fold marks, ... morebut are still in good condition.
