Pre Civil War Surgeon's Blood Letting Tool or Fleam Brass Case HOW LONDON
An internet search found that this fleam is earlier than I originally thought. It is marked" HOW IN LONDON" c. 1700 brass veterinary fleam marked: HOW. This was made by John Gray. The firm started by Ephraim How of Essex during the late 17th century was a well establish group of cuttlers. His son John How inherited the firm and later turned the firm over to Savigny in 1720. The brass case is marked John Gray. John Gray was given the right to use the How name in 1703. Pieces found with the markings HOW IN LONDON are thought to be made by John Holland of Sheffield around 1765. Seems these were the only items he marked this way. From the website alllancets A fleam was a blood-letting tool that a surgeon used to cut the flesh of a sick person and drain the bad or infected blood out of the person's system! Since antibiotics had not ... morebeen discovered even by the mid 1800's these tools were commonly used by doctors in Colonial times up through the Civil War. Veterinarians were also known to use them. This one was made in London and since the Confederacy imported much of there supplies from England it is possible this could have seen use by a Confederate surgeon. Just one of the fleam cutting tips is heaily used while the others have normal use for their age. The small knife blade is also in good condition. An interesting piece for your Civil War and earlier medical display. Blades are in original as found condition and NOT re-sharpened. If you want to restore or resharpen it this could be easily done.

The back of the handle has a couple of very tiny nicks in it, the blade could use a clean, but otherwise in overall excellent antique condition, and a great find! Please ask questions prior to bidding. Payment must be made within 3 day. Please be considerate and let me know if there will be a delay. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding! Antique VETERINARY Horn-Cased FLEAM, with Thumb Lancet Insert.
Antique Veterinary Fleam with Horn and Brass Case. The practice of bloodletting. Or phlebotomy, dates back to antiquity. The followers of Hippocrates in the fifth century B.C. strongly believed in bleeding patients, and it is likely that this was done in Egyptian times and probably even before that. Early civilizations may have been inspired by seeing bats remove blood from animals, hippos scratching on trees until they bled, and other animals scratching at diseased body parts for relief. Additionally, there were many human examples of bleeding such as spontaneous nosebleeds and menstruation that had to be explained. It is perhaps these signs in nature that led early civilizations to put it all together: bleeding must have some beneficial value! From these simple observations came increasingly complex theories as to why bloodletting was necessary ... moreand how it worked. An early theory was that there were four main bodily humours: blood. Phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. An imbalance in these humours was postulated as the need for bloodletting, purging, vomiting, etc. Virtually every known medical condition at one time or another was treated by these methods, and in their turn these theories were extended to the treatment of animals. The fleam is perhaps one of the most commonly found bloodletting antiques. These devices have one or more blades at right angles to the handle. The most common form is a brass case containing 2 or 3 steel blades, often stamped with a maker's name. The blades were usually of various sizes to offer a selection to the phlebotomist. Many of these fleams were likely to have been used on animals, but the ones with small blades no doubt were used at times on humans as well. Imagine the farming family that used their fleam for both purposes! Some horn-cased fleams came with a removable thumb lancet inserted into the horn case. © Douglas Arbittier. MD] On offer here is one such horn-cased fleam. Probably dating from the mid-nineteenth century. Of typical construction. It consists of a

Antique Medical Spring Loaded Fleam Bleeder Lancet BloodLetting Tool
This a spring loaded lancet or fleam used to bleed ill people. It was cocked. And the trigger fired, to drive the blade into the vein. Inside of back has Roman Numeral XIII marked in it. The letters FD on the back. Interior parts. Including the screw, are clearly hand-made. The case is probably original. There is no leather on the sides, and the leather covering in top and bottom outside is rough. Inside is much nicer. Someone has inked the date 1812. Nice handmade latch. Insurance and Delivery Confirmation are both included in the shipping within the United States. We will happily combine shipping. Antique Veterinary Fleam Rodgers early 19th century Blood Letting Tool
Description This is an antique Veternary Fleam made by Rodgers in the early 19 th century. While there are reports of this type of instrument being used on humans. It is more likely that these were reserved for veterinary use, while the common thumb lancet was the instrument of choice for use in people. These instruments with their triangular-shaped blades were designed to be placed over the vein(most commonly the jugular or saphenous) and struck with a fleam stick. This would ideally result in a rapid penetration of the vein with minimal risk to the operator and minimal dissection of the subcutaneous tissues. This latter point would have been considered important in minimizing the formation of a dissecting hematoma. Once the desired blood was drained from the patient. The operator would place a pin through the edges of the incision. A figure ... moreeight of tail hair or thread would then be placed over the pin to retain closure. Statements from Mayhew in his 1864 treatise would indicate that the perceived benefits of these procedures were coming into great question in the latter half of the 19th century for all conditions except laminitis. The Fleam is in as found condition and hasn’t been cleaned It measures 90mm(3 1/2 inches) when closed. If you would like any more information please ask. Rare 18th Century FRENCH SIX-Blade VETERINARY FLEAM, by Luent Freres
Rare 18 th C. French 6-Bladed Veterinary Fleam The practice of bloodletting. The fleams sold in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries consisted of one or more blades that folded out of a fitted brass shield. Many of these would originally have been manufactured by cutlers rather than dedicated scientific or surgical instrument makers. In the late nineteenth century fleams with horn shields were also sold. The largest blades were to be used to open the deeper veins and the smaller blades to open the more superficial veins. To force the fleam into the vein required the use of a bloodstick. A stick about 35-38 cm long and 2 cm in diameter. The blade was held against the vein and a blow was given to the back of the blade with the stick in such a way that the fleam penetrated, but did not go

This is in the best overall condition I have ever seen; and appears to have been uncarried or very lightly carried. But never used. Fleams used for bleeding animals such as horses, dogs, cattle, etc. circa 1800-1850.In the 1700's and well into the 1800's, it was commonly believed that blood letting would cure many medical ailments. This misguided and unproven practice was prevalent for decades and decades before medical science became evolved enough to discount any benefit from blood letting. In fact, it worsened ... moreany existing medical condition; and so it is amazing today to think that this practice was so wide spread and commonly practiced for over a century and a half; and was even considered fashionable. This piece would have been carried by a Man in his pocket in order to bleed his own animals or help others with this practice. These larger sized instruments for blood lettings are called a Fleam, and were used on horses, cattle, dogs, et al. The smaller sized instruments, called lancets, were used for bleeding humans; and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Early Bowie knives sometimes have a small double edged blade inserted into the handle to accommodate bleedings of either animals or humans. When the blade is positioned over a vein, the back of the blade is pressed, which drives the sharpened edge downward; thus, cleanly slicing the vein and allowing the bleeding process to begin. The different sizes controlled the depth of the cut, and was much more"efficient" than doing this manually, and allowed the veins to heal faster. Most of these early fleams were made by the Master Cutlers in Sheffield, Old England; the knife capitol of the world. Some were also made in Franc
