Very neat old double sided saw/knife. This measures approximately 17.5” long in total. Based on my research I believe this to be an amputation saw from ... morethe civil war era but please use your own knowledge to verify that. It does show overall signs of age/wear. The straight edge blade is no longer sharp and it could use a good cleaning. Please review all photos closely for condition as they are considered part of the description. 1800's Brass Tourniquet - Maw & Son - Civil War Era - Wound Surgical Amputation
Up for auction is an original 1800's Brass Tourniquet that I believe was once part of a Surgeon's Amputation set. It is clearly marked"S. Maw& Son London" on one side of the"T" handle. My research revealed a similar style of tourniquet dat ing back to 1798 but I believe this is from the Civil War era or before. The tourniquet measures approx. 3 1/4" tall and the lower base measures approx. 2 1/8" x by 1 1/2" I imagine that it was probably sold without a strap as any piece of cloth or fabric would suffice and it would not be too difficult to fashion one. Rare Civil War Era Medical Amputation Surical Tools -- RARE --Set of Four
This rare set of four cauterizing tools was primarily used during the Civil War in the amputation of limbs. The unusual tips are carved from what appears to be translucent agate. Each tool has a long brass furl and a wood handle. It is my understanding the tips were made of stone so that when the tool was heated the flesh would not stick. This set is the only one I have ever seen and what information I have has come from various collectors. If anyone with knowledge would like to share some additional information it would be appreciated. No reserve. Good luck bidding!
Antique Medical surgical amputation knife blade scalpel Civil War era
Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I would guess this would be civil war but.it does not have a wooden handle. The handle looks. Feels like plastic.probably Bakelite. The stamp on the blade says Emerig Phila The box says W.H. Walmsley The knife and box definitely go together.to the point that the knife only fits in one way. Can not be flipped vertically. Box is velvet lined. That is all I know.not much If you have more information on this item. I would appreciate it if you would drop me an email with your thoughts. This item is in really nice condition for its age. Still sharp and the velvet is intact and in good condition. The case shows wear and tear. Readers have been kind enough to verify that ... morethis is indeed an amputation knife from around the Civil War era and suggest that the handle is ebony)

To frequent clinics in surgery and dissection, and earned a second medical degree. He remained on the staff of the medical college for five years after graduation; all the while envisioning and planning a new level of medical education. After several years of preparation, including a tour of the great medical centers of Europe to observe their methods. He opened the Polyclinic in 1881. The clinic provided. Rare Civil War Amputation Surgical Set- Complete
This a rare complete Civil War era amputation set with one tray. This set has clearly seen some use with pitting and rusting of some the instruments. Particularly the knives. The set contains multiple amputation knives, scalpels, saws, tourniquet, trephines, forceps and periosteal elevators. Some of the instruments bear the manufacturing mark of H. Kern. The box has been redone with new veneer and red velvet. There are no inscriptions on the box. The brass lock plate on the box is missing. These sets are becoming increasingly difficult to find in any condition and most, like this one have a few flaws. I have owned this set for over 25 years and it was always a popular item of discussion wherever it was displayed. I am charging $50 shipping on this set but will refund any difference once I insure and ship it. Thanks for bidding. Posted with
Rare Antique Surgical Instrument Set - Civil War Era Amputation Set
This is a very nice Civil War era amputation surgical set lined in purple velvet. The set was manufactured by Otto and Reynders. The set contains scalpels. Amputation knives and saws, tourniquet, rongeur, forceps and several needles. The largest amputation knife is not original to the kit and is clearly a modern day instrument made by Archer Co. who are well known for their reproduction instruments in the last 25 years. The purple velvet lining is in good condition but is faded where it is exposed. The walnut box is in excellent shape with no cracking or damage. I have owned this kit for almost 25 years and am now selling my medical collection over the next month or so. These sets are quickly becoming unobtainable as most are in museums or collections never to be offered for sale. ANTIQUE SURGICAL AMPUTATION KNIFE 19th century medical Indian or Civil war ?
Estate sale find! Very old 19th century i believe medical surgen amputation knife. The knife is stamped with the makers name' LENTZ& SONS' The knife has a total length of 12 inches with a long slender double edged blade length of 7 3/4 inch. Appears to be a black ebony wood checkered handle 4 1/4 inches long 1/2 inch wide. I would rate this in very good condition considering it's age. There is an age crack in the handle showing in the last picture that is pretty minor, the handle is solid and tight to the blade, some dark rust stains on the blade or beautiful aged patina whichever you prefer to call it. Blade looks full length with no nicks or chips. This is guaranteed by me as an all original antique knife not a reproduction. CIVIL WAR ERA SURGICAL AMPUTATION SAW AND FLESH KNIVE
At the onset of the Civil War the Federal Medical Dept. had but 62 surgeons assigned to military hospitals. Throughout the war years the number of amputations being performed in field tent hospitals rose to more than 50,000. The 58 and 69 calibers soft lead bullets impacting and shattering bone made amputation the only life saving method of preventing gangrene. Surgical amputation saws were in short supply and the North contracted with individual saw manufacturers to produce an inexpensive combination flesh knife and bone saw. At least 10 different companies produced the same saw which was patterned after the French knife/saw made by"Peugeot Freres" The last three photos are of this knife/saw. I have owned these saws that were made by Boynton, Charles Disston, Henry Disston and others. Further adding to the need for this saw is ... morethat the South with little or no source of acquiring medical instruments relied upon their cavalry to target Union medical wagon convoys and capture much needed supplies. The book"Doctors in Grey" states that amputations in the South were being performed with carpenter saws. Artery retractors were made by bending the tine on a table fork or making one from the wire bail of a water bucket. Ink scrapers used as scalpels. This knife-saw measures 17 inches in overall length with a blade of almost 11 inches. Sharpened on one side as a flesh knife and a bone saw on the other side, The surgeon need only to rotate it in his hand to switch functions. With the number of wounded being treated after a major battle, speed was of the utmost importance. A good surgeon could perform an amputation in 10 minutes and call out"next" A church being used to treat the wounded after the battle at Gettysburg had holes drilled into the floor to drain off the blood. Severed limbs were simply tossed out an open window. Such was the practice of Civil War medicine as performed in the field. Condition of this saw is very good for it's more than 150 years of age. The wood handle is intac

Loss of finish and/or stains. The ear syringe is complete and functional. But comes only with the tip shown in the photographs. The wood tube holds an intriguing pair of glass tubes with one pointed tube with rubber collar fitting inside the other. We have absolutely no idea of their intended use. Civil War Era Amputation Bone Saw Capital Style, possibly Tiemann
An expert seeing these pictures told me it was most likely an American saw ca. 1870 or so. A Tiemann most likely or maybe a Sharp and Smith. The markings have worn out if it was marked. The marking 11 I believe refers to the size. The condition is very good, well balanced, the handle appears to have no cracks or repairs, and everything is straight. CONUSA only. Thanks for looking. Eight Chirurgical Treatises. On these following heads, viz. I. Of Tumours. II. Of Ulcers. III. Of Diseases of the Anus. IV. Of the King's Evil. V. Of Wounds. VI. Of Gun-Shot Wounds. VII. Of Fractures and Luxations. VIII. Of the Lues Venerea. Wiseman. Richard. London: Printed for B. Motte, 1734. 6th Ed. Later edition of an important medical text first published in 1676. This is Wiseman's chief work. Based on his experiences tending the Royalist armies. The eight treatises concern ulcers, tumours, diseases of the anus, king's evil, wounds, gunshot wounds, fractures and luxations, and lues venerea(syphilis and gonorrhoea) respectively.his] immense expertise in traumatic surgery is particularly evident in his account of gunshot wounds, including severe compound limb fractures. ODNB"Wiseman was the first to advocate primary amputation ... moreof a badly injured or diseased limb rather than to wait until the onset of infection; he also practiced flap amputation rather than the circular or guillotine amputation method more commonly used in his day. He was the first to describe tuberculosis of the joints(tumor albus) and his treatise on syphilis and gonorrhea includes a description of the surgical treatment of suppression of urine by maens of external urethrotomy.Wiseman is our surgical Sydenham. He by his skill and personality helped to raise the whole status of surgery. He was the first of the great British surgeons. Power, 198-201, quoted in ONDB) For each topic Wiseman examines the anatomy, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management, adding selected case histories or observations from his vast experience. These personal observations, some brief and some in extensive detail, concern 660 individual patients, a weight of evidence which contrasts sharply with the absence or plagiarism of case histories in many contemporaneous publications. These case histories constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain. Original leather. Rear board present bu

CIVIL WAR AMPUTATION SAW SURGEON TOOL 1800'S KITCHEN CAST KNIFE ANTIQUE DOCTOR
I can make out WARRANTED CAST STEEL on the blade. The blade measures 11" and overall it is about 17" Nice wooden handle with great patina. The handle has rivet style fasteners which indicates the 1800"s. These saws were sold as kitchen tools back then. And used during the Civil War for amputations by surgeons. The opposite side of the saw was probably used as a knife. Otherwise, the writing on the blade would be upside down. The very end is chipped off. S& H is $7.85 to the lower 48. I ship worldwide. Nice Original 18th Century Revolutionary War Amputation Bone Saw A great find. This piece dates right at the time of the American Revolution, circa 1770. As you can see I've included a book reference to an almost identical example that saw use during the engagement of the war. Very good overall condition on this example. The thumbscrews are tight. I have not attempted to try to force any of them loose. Some slight pitting to the blade from age. Nice brass accents on the iron and of course a great old lathe turned wooden handle. Take a moment to'click' on the individual images and you'll see you can produce enlargements ... morethat showcase a piece that would have been used to take part in medical amputations. Warfare saw the use of amputations as a frequent treatment by Doctors. Often the loss of limb or fingers was better than a systemic and fatal injury. FANTASTIC LATE 1700 EARLY 1800 CAST STEEL AMPUTATION SAW WOODEN HANDLE PGH FIND
SOME YEARS BACK I SERVED AS PROJECT MANAGER FOR THE LIQUIDATION THE THE CONTENTS OF THE PHILADELPHIA GENERAL HOSPITAL. A HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA INSTITUTION WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS BLOCKLEY ALMSHOUSE. IN THE COURSE OF THIS LIQUIDATION I'RESCUED' A LARGE NUMBER OF ITEMS FROM VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS THAT OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED OR DISCARDED. I HAVE HAD THESE ITEMS IN MY OWN COLLECTION AND IN STORAGE EVER SINCE. I HAVE DECIDED TO UNBURDEN MYSELF OF THE STORAGE UNIT AND AS SUCH AM PUTTING UP ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN STORED THEREIN UP FOR AUCTION IN THE COMING WEEKS. THIS AUCTION IS FOR AN EARLY AMPUTATION SAW DATING FROM LATE 1700S TO EARLY 1800S. IT IS CONSTRUCTED OF CAST STEEL WITH A WOODEN HANDLE. IF IT HAS A MAKER MARK ON IT. I COULD NOT FIND IT, SO AM CALLING IT UNSIGNED. THE STEEL FRAME AND BLADE HAVE AN AWESOME PATINA OF ... moreAGE AND WEAR ATTESTING TO AUTHENTICITY OF THE SAW. THE HANDLE IS MADE OF TWO PIECES OF WOOD CUT AND HOLLOWED TO FIT THE FRAME AND SECURED WITH WHAT I ASSUME TO BE RIVETS. THE SEAMS ARE NOT DAMAGE.IT IS HOW THE HANDLE WAS APPLIED TO THE BODY. THE THUMBSCREW AT END THAT WOULD BE USED TO ADJUST BLADE TENSION IS RUSTED IN PLACE. IT COULD BE LOOSENED WITH RUSTOLEUM IF DESIRED BUT I AM LEAVING IT AS IS. THE SAW MEASURES 18" LONG FROM END TO END. IT MAKES FOR A SPECTACULAR DISPLAY PIECE AND WOULD BE IDEAL FOR COLONIAL PERIOD REENACTMENTS. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING IS BY USPS REGISTERED MAIL OR INSURED PRIORITY MAIL ONLY TO ENSURE SAFEST POSSIBLE TRANSIT AND DELIVERY OF ITEMS. ============================== Most items are photographed in natural outdoor sunlight when possible. As such any dark areas in the images are shadows or shady areas unless otherwise stipulated. PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING! REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN IF ITEM IS RETURNED WITHIN 14 DAYS BUT ONLY IF SAID ITEM IS MISREPRESENTED IN DESCRIPTION. RETURN SHIPPING IS RESPONSIBILITY OF BUYER. PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 3 DAYS FROM AUCTION CLOSE UNLESS AGREED TO OTHERWISE IN WRITING. I ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR PURCHA
1898 BENJAMIN BRODIE Book SURGERY AMPUTATION PIONEER 1st Antique MEDICAL Rare
Up for auction is a rare biography of a famed British surgeon and physician. Entitled SIR BENJAMIN COLLINS BRODIE. By Timothy Holmes, M.A. F.R.C.S. Published in London by T. Fisher Unwin in 1898. FIRST EDITION. 256 pages plus publisher’s catalogue in rear. Brodie was a pioneer in the study of bone and joint disease. His 1818 work. PATHOLOGICAL AND SURGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE DISEASES OF THE JOINTS revolutionized the way surgeons approached joint diseases, and resulted in a reduction in amputations. This particular biography was published as part of a series entitled MASTERS OF MEDICINE, and is bound in olive green cloth with an Art Nouveau gilt-stamped image of a snake entwined around a mortar and pestle on the front cover and spine. Book is very well preserved and in NEAR FINE condition. Frontispiece portrait of Brodie. Good luck! Powered ... moreby
