It appears that some pieces are missing and some may not be original to the set. The one curved plier type instrument has the name GEORGE ERMOLD stamped on the inside and the curved nozzle piece has the name EVERS. The one tweezer type instrument has the name R. HUE or possibly R. HOE& Co Patent. It sure appears to be from the Civil War era. The set appears to be very high quality and we left it in all original uncleaned or polished condition. Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I would guess this would be civil war but.it does not have a wooden handle. The handle looks. Feels like plastic.probably Bakelite. The stamp on the blade says Emerig Phila The box says W.H. Walmsley The knife and box definitely go together.to the point that the knife only fits in one way. Can not be flipped vertically. Box is velvet lined. This set has an additional pair of attachments(photo no.9) originally it would have included one extension and just two attachments. The leather case is a little brittle. Has a puncture and shows fraying. It snaps closed as it should. No weird smell. All the cauter pieces are made of stainless steel and in near mint condition. No rusting or oxidation. No dents. Antique medical 1800s doctors surgical urethral instruments in leather bound leather lined cas with nickel silver slide locks. Case is signed maker J.J. McGonigle Baltimore MD. Fantastic Antique English Brain Surgery Kit Mahogany Handles c. 1750 Surgical NR
From my private collection I am selling a wonderful antique neurosurgical kit from the mid 18th century. It is English. Made by Dickinson and is ca. 1750. The kit is in the original red lined mahogany box and contains 8 instruments. All original. The only pieces missing are minor: a small scalpel and bone brush. These do turn up on ebay from time to time so the set can be completed if desired. Included in the set are chestnut handled trephines, lenticular, elevator, and other instruments. Also included is a rare maker's marked Samuel Sharp's forceps. This is an unusual instrument used to lift out the circular piece of bone created by the trephine bits. Some of the instruments have light to moderate surface rust which can be cleaned rather easily. I have not done this as I decided to leave this to the buyer, if desired. Rare Antique Surgical Instrument Set - Civil War Era Amputation Set
This is a very nice Civil War era amputation surgical set lined in purple velvet. The set was manufactured by Otto and Reynders. The set contains scalpels. Amputation knives and saws, tourniquet, rongeur, forceps and several needles. The largest amputation knife is not original to the kit and is clearly a modern day instrument made by Archer Co. who are well known for their reproduction instruments in the last 25 years. The purple velvet lining is in good condition but is faded where it is exposed. The walnut box is in excellent shape with no cracking or damage. I have owned this kit for almost 25 years and am now selling my medical collection over the next month or so. I'm happy to offer this great 1930's surgical scalpel and three blades up for auction. This knife was designed by Rudolph Beaver and patent 1916244 was granted in 1933. See the design and patent writup at this link I found this knife in a box I purchased at auction many years ago. The knife has some shelf wear but will clean up very nicely. The bleeder has four forged steel fleams contained in a brass plain case. The case covers the blade portion completely. The fleams are on a swivel and they can be swiveled out to use then swiveled back in to protect them. There are four such fleams. The brass case is undecorated.
