The blades, supporting rod, spring, cocking and release mechanisms are encased within the brass body. The top of the case has a knob to adjust the height of the blades to determine the depth of the cut. Turning this knob raises and lowers the bottom portion of the scarificator housing the eight curved blades. The length of the blades protruding beyond the parallel slits in bottom determine the ultimate depth of the cuts. The iron lever is then used to cock the blades. The dimensions of the bottom of the scarificator are approximately 1 1/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches. The height, excluding the blade height adjustment knob and cocking device on the top is 1 1/2 inches. Bloodletting has been used in most of the world cultures and societies as a medical procedure of removing blood from the body to cure numerous ailments and diseases. According to the publication“ Bloodletting Instruments in the National Museum of History and Technology” by Audrey Davis and Toby Appel. This procedure has also been referred to as“breathing a vein. England in about 1830 as a tool manufacturer, but shortly thereafter starting making some edged items such as knives and razors, but this is the first and only Blood Letting tool that I have ever come across by this company, I would guess it to be from the mid 1830's to possibly 1850. It has horn handles that do have some chipping(see pictures) and 2 lancet blades, of which one is marked"M*B MOULSON BROTHERS" and other than the chipping on the handles is in very good to excellent vintage condition for an item that is approximately 165 to 180 years old. Hard to believe in this day and age that within the last 200 years people were naive and barbaric enough to practice blood letting as a cure for what ailed them, I personally think I will hold onto my bad blood(LOL) This is a Teriffic piece of history that will enhance anyone's vintage collection! Antique Medical Phlebotomy Tin Blood Letting Bleeding Cup 1800s Civil War Era Old antique medical instrument. A tin blood letting cup in good condition. This cup was used after a scarificator made an incision, as a receptacle for the blood. Most commonly made of glass, some cups were made of tin especially for non-breaking portability such as war usages, and some experts believe that cups like this one were used during the Civil War. This tin bleeding cup has the typical rounded bottom and measures about 2 ¼ inches top to bottom with the top diameter measuring 1 ¼ inches across; the bottom at the widest point has a diameter of 2 inches. Pre Civil War Surgeon's Blood Letting Tool or Fleam Brass Case HOW LONDON
An internet search found that this fleam is earlier than I originally thought. It is marked" HOW IN LONDON" c. 1700 brass veterinary fleam marked: HOW. This was made by John Gray. The firm started by Ephraim How of Essex during the late 17th century was a well establish group of cuttlers. His son John How inherited the firm and later turned the firm over to Savigny in 1720. The brass case is marked John Gray. John Gray was given the right to use the How name in 1703. Pieces found with the markings HOW IN LONDON are thought to be made by John Holland of Sheffield around 1765. Seems these were the only items he marked this way. From the website alllancets A fleam was a blood-letting tool that a surgeon used to cut the flesh of a sick person and drain the bad or infected blood out of the person's system! Since antibiotics had not ... morebeen discovered even by the mid 1800's these tools were commonly used by doctors in Colonial times up through the Civil War. Veterinarians were also known to use them. This one was made in London and since the Confederacy imported much of there supplies from England it is possible this could have seen use by a Confederate surgeon. Just one of the fleam cutting tips is heaily used while the others have normal use for their age. The small knife blade is also in good condition. An interesting piece for your Civil War and earlier medical display. Blades are in original as found condition and NOT re-sharpened. If you want to restore or resharpen it this could be easily done.

The housing on this model measures 1 ½” X 1 ¾” X 1 ½”The blades are all present. No chips or missing edges. This design goes back a long way. Has a hollow handle and removable top revealing a wooden piece that holds three interchangeable surgical lancets. There is one extra lancet in addition to the one attached. The original blade will not come off. There appears to be a cap missing from the bottom. The lever on top of the brass box releases a set of blades that snap out of the slits on the base providing a standardized depth and length of cut. This model has twelve blades. 1880's Ruby Flashed ~Blood Letting~Cup This amazing item was found packed away in a box of stuff in the attic. After doing alot of research. I am 99% sure it's a Blood Letting Cup. It's a nice early example in a rare color and in excellent condition. I can only see a few pinholes and a scuff on the ruby flash. There is almost a blue green iridescence on the ruby flash. I see a 1" internal stress crack from age or the making. It has the smooth recessed alcohol well on the top. In certain lighting it looks amberina in color I can see 3 small bubbles in the glass. Antique Veterinary Fleam Rodgers early 19th century Blood Letting Tool
Description This is an antique Veternary Fleam made by Rodgers in the early 19 th century. While there are reports of this type of instrument being used on humans. It is more likely that these were reserved for veterinary use, while the common thumb lancet was the instrument of choice for use in people. These instruments with their triangular-shaped blades were designed to be placed over the vein(most commonly the jugular or saphenous) and struck with a fleam stick. ANTIQUE BLOOD LETTING TOOL FLEAM KNIFE JOSEPH RODGERS ENGLAND w/ORIGINAL CASE
This auction is for an antique blood letting tool in it's original imprinted stiff paperboard case. Made by the Joseph Rodgers& Sons Company of Sheffield England; the medical device has a 4" ebony wood handle, blade is shaped and marked with the company name, along with"S. Norfolk St. Sheffield" on one side and a star next to an iron cross symbol on the other side. Has sustained some damage over its long life time, with chipping and a split off section at the end of the wooden handle-could easily be sanded down for a nicer, restored appearance; the tip of the blade also has some rusted build up on the tip, tip is rather blunt, edges are barely sharp-again, a restorative clean and sharpening would bring it back to lovely condition. The case shows heavy wear but the company name can still be easily read, tip end is split ... moreso the fleam slides through the end.
