Here we have an antique Quack electroshock therapy device. Called the"Congress Medical Apparatus" made by George C. Frye of Portland, ME. The paper shown in photo 6 reads, Directions for Using Congress Medical Apparatus. WITH MESCO DRY CELL BATTERY. The small switch to the left of the base is used to put the battery in operation. The cell is working only when this switch is on the contact stud, cousequently the life of the cell will be prolonged by taking care not to turn it on until everything is read for the application, and to turn it off promptly when through. Antique Quack? Medicine IONTAPHOR Medical Device FREE SHIPPING!!!
This auction is for a device that I thought might be a quack medical device but it seems the modern version of it is a very lucrative and high quality instrument. And quite costly I might add. I suppose this is one of the early versions, probably not pre 30s but more likely in the forties. It is made by a W. D. Tallman in Ashland Ohio. The divice here is pretty much all there but upon removing the dial cover I find all the parts, but a three pronged cord with nothing plugged into it. It might have been the power source, ie. some sort of battery or something. I can't really explain the purpose of this Iontaphor but it has something to do with aligning the ions in the body to absorb more medicines or something to that effect. It contains the wires and several lead sheets for connectivity, a glass test tube and a cloth wrap and of course ... morethe meter and switch panel. One source even listed it as a device to enable the enamel in the teeth to absorb medicine. I hope you know much more about this than I do. It is a Portable Electro-Shock Therapy Device which comes complete with everything you need to shock yourself back to health. Pieces like this were widely popular until the 1930's when they all but disappeared off the market most likely because of the AMA. This device comes in a solid oak case and displays nicely. Wow I hate to sell this thing. What a kooky. Crazy cool piece of medical equipment. Seems to work exactly as intended. I was dumb enough to put it near my skin and sure enough little electrical impulses jumped from the machine to my arm. It comes on and the purple light runs up the tubes. It shows 6 electrodes in the instructions but there is only the throat electrode and the comb electrode included. I don't think they were ever 6 electrodes in this set because there is only 1 missing hole which would be for the general electrode. This thing is crazy cool I love it. Vintage 1940's RAY & RADIATION Instrument, Rare QUACK MEDICAL DEVICE, It WORKS !
Up for auction is a very unusual piece of medical quackery in the form of an ultra violet ray and radiation machine- say what! This device was produced by Lawndale Laboratories in either Lawndale or Los Angeles. Calif during the 1930s or 1940s. These two different cities are listed on two separate labels on the unit. According to the instruction label located inside the lid- the machine was intended to be placed on the floor with one side raised by leaning on the box lid to form a foot rest. Place the bare feet across the tube or machine may be placed in the lap and both hands can lay across the tube. Internet research that I've done on this strange medical quackery device indicates it was touted as a cure for arthritis. Acne, asthma, bronchitis, hay fever, gout, dropsy, constipation, indigestion, jaundice, cold hands and feet, etc, etc ... moreas the list goes on and on and on. Just google"R& R ultra violet ray and radiation machine" and you'll get tons of hits on the unit and it's miracle claims. This is a 1930s-era brochure for a medical device for"atmospheric electrical treatment. This brochure refers to an article published in the Boston Herald. March 10, 1935, quoting David Sarnoff, president of the Radio Corporation of America. There is also a reference to an article in Popular Science Monthly, February 1934, by Edwin Teale, about the research work on the therapeutic value of negative ions. There is a list of 15 diseases and conditions that this device is recommended for. The brochure measures 8-3/4" x 18-3/4" long when opened up all the way and is printed on both sides and folds up with 5 printed panels per side. Made by Renulife Electric Company in Detroit. Michigan. This unit is Model M, and puts out 115-120 volts and 88 watts of juice. When plugged in and under low power it produced an ultraviolet light glow and a buzzing sound, then when applied near the skin the"patient" will recieve a mild shocking sensation. That was sold between the late 1890's and the early 1900's. This device may have been known as a Galvanic Stimulator. The box does not have any heavy marring but does show signs of use and mishandling. There are basic directions for the use of the device on the top inside lid. Antique Quack Machine ELEKTROLLER Medical Doctor Device "Phony Cure" VERY RARE!!
Quack Medical! Unknown CONDITION(read below) VERY RARE- for Display in Office-Home-or Museum This device is has a Brass plate on it labeled Elektroller Trademark X Made In Czechoslovakia. Not real sure what or how this is used. It is very old. I am guessing 1900s-1930s or maybe older? I am assuming this may be a sort of mechanical"tens unit" This device has two rollers on the bottom that spin a little gear. If you lift off the Chrome/Silver Cylinder, on the inside there is a coil of wire that spins between a"U" shaped magnet when you roll the rollers. There are a couple of contacts on top inside that seem to operate as the rollers spin. The rollers have a"band" of rubber on them which appear in good condition. As it spins I think it is meant to deliver a pulsating current to the rollers. I believe this was a ... moresort of electro muscle conditioner or"antique tens unit" I have rolled the rollers down my arm and occasionally would feel very mild pulse. Even though it rolls nice and everything appears to be functioning, it no longer pulses. Maybe the contacts need cleaning. I really do not know much about this other than I have seen a similar devise sell at a local auction for $600.00 a few years ago. Maybe this is a very rare device? There is signs of common wear/tear that one would expect to see on something of this age. I will be selling this as a Display item ONLY. Do to its age and uncertainty of use, I am selling this as. Dr. Sanche apparently moved around a lot, keeping one step ahead of the authorities. His July 27, 1897 patent lists his residence as New Orleans, and his Aug 3, 1897 patent as Detroit. In 1915, a fraud order was issued against Dr. Sanche& Co. of New York, Rochester, Chicago and Detroit. He soon evaded this setback by marketing his devices from Montreal. They were sold as cure-all devices. Many claimed to cure everything for arthritis to baldness. The Radio Vitant included, in fact, this device was also supposed to cure“infant paralysis” The Radio Vitant relies on light and heat to assert its healing properties on the patient. The afflicted would spend the prescribed amount of time in front, or under the light, and Voila! Cured! This type of light therapy was so popular that Walter Reed hospital had utilized versions of this same device and manufacturer on its patients during the early years of the last century. Photo 4 shows the plug for the electrical source. It does not work with American receptacles. There is no adapter. Is 200-250v for European systems? Is 100-125v for the US? I don't know. Here is a VERY rare phrenology device. I have only seen one other one of these and it was in a museum. I have never seen one on eBay. You probably will never have an opportunity to purchase one of these again. It is totally complete except for the key(to lock the box) The batteries are original and quite rare themselves. The batteries have very little power left in them. So the device will not work with the original batteries hooked up. I did build a battery pack that would mimic the original batteries to see if the unit worked. It did. It operated flawlessly. These photographs were created by top photographers of the era some are marked"Alta Studios" while the majority are unidentified. These photographs were posed and shot for the specific purpose of creating vending machine cards. The images are daring for the day and pushing the societal envelope to be sure-these reflected popular culture tastes and perhaps created it in many regards. The cards were given flirty jazz-age titles that were often times double-entendre based and the arcade cards were collected and circulated as trading cards. Antique? Bausch an Lomb Medical Device Simpson Electric Co Quack Machine?
Were not quite sure what this device is. But it has 3 different companies on it. The first being on the side of the device witch is B&L, which we think stands for Buasch and Lomb. Buasch and Lomb started in 1853 which made all sorts of lenses. The second name on it is in the voltage meter which is Simpson Electric Company, we don't have much information about them. The third name is on the wand attached to the device which is A.O. We believe that stands for American Optical? but again were not sure. We believe this device to be from the 1930s or earlier due to the cotton cord. The condition of it is rough, with paint missing around with and some tape around it as well. Also the back of the device is missing. The plug looks intact but we have not plugged it in at all. It included a copy of directions for both users and physicians and a complete inventory of glass electrodes that were available at the time with their intended uses.
