With a great pattern to it, and the blade is very clearly marked Arnold& Sons, Smithfield, London. The back of the handle has a couple of very tiny nicks in it, the blade could use a clean, but otherwise in overall excellent antique condition, and a great find! Antique Gold Plated Medical Instrument Ebony Handle Bleeder?
This is an antique gold plated medical instrument. It is 6 1/4" long. It has an ebony handle. There are no makers marks. The screw on the top on the handle has the number"206" The screw lock sliders, are marked"1" and"2" The tip cover piece was made with 3 splits. 2 of tips have gone missing, see photo. When the tip cover piece is removed, it exposes a small sharp spear shaped needle. When the numbered screws are loosened, they do not slide, stuck. The only visible damage to the instrument. Is to the tip, which also has missing plating. The balance of the plating is good, there is a small none separated crack in the handle. I do not know for sure what the instrument was used for, but the spear tip is sharp enough to easily pierce the skin, if used for bleeding. This a spring loaded lancet or fleam used to bleed ill people. It was cocked. And the trigger fired, to drive the blade into the vein. Inside of back has Roman Numeral XIII marked in it. The letters FD on the back. Interior parts. Including the screw, are clearly hand-made. The case is probably original. There is no leather on the sides, and the leather covering in top and bottom outside is rough. Inside is much nicer. Someone has inked the date 1812. Nice handmade latch. I have always thought that this item dated from the late 18th century because of the workmanship and especially because of the fitted case which has many attributes of that time period. This item is in working order and in good condition other than some light surface rusting on the trigger which is the only part on this bleeder which is made of iron. It's paper box.Which has a leather hinge, on the back,is no longer connects the bottom to the top. It has a fine steel hook and catch,which is very typical of the late 18th century. The case is lined in velvet,sides and top. The bleeder measures 2 1/2"high and 1 3/4" across. The box is 3" high. Good luck!

This antique brass bleeder was found recently when cleaning an old house for a sale. I found that medical tools like this were used frequently in the 19th century. It was used for bloodletting. Two piece tool is in very good condition. Has spring loaded steel blade which still has lots of tension. All pieces move freely& work well. Tool comes in a wooden case covered with a dark brown paper or very thin leather& measures 2-5/8" x 1-1/2" x 5/8" Hinge is torn into. Case has small hook closure. Both covering& interior lining have aged. Bleeder is engraved with what appears to be an upside down 8 or B& the letter G. Piece displays well& would be a fine addition to any collection. The case shows it's age with some missing leather on the corners and scrapes but, in good shape it is lined with black felt like material. This brass bleeder is in good overall condition. works 100% and is sharp. You can try it out for yourself I just felt the edges and checked the spring action which is still sharp. RI they are rivited togather in the same way the bleeder is. it still has spring to it, the only thing is that it was scratched off to read the name, otherwise the petina is all great, not sure of the age of the tweezers, but both are medical and you are bidding on both pieces, Thanks for looking, if you have questions please ask, if you are an expert in this field I would love to hear what I have wrong. Very nice antique brass fleem or bleeder. The piece is in great condition for it's age! The main body is brass and engraved on both sides with"H. Sewell Leicester" The flash on my camera washed out the color of the brass body) One blade is marked"Dixon" the other is marked"R. Tomlin" The blades are still quite sharp! ANTIQUE c1850 WIEGAND SNOWDEN MECHANICAL FLEAM BLEEDER BLOOD LETTING MEDICAL
Brass back slides off to see inside. Name Snowden and Wiegand is stamped in brass on back. I have no idea how this works. Found it when cleaning out a friends place. I have no history on it. Box is in functioning. But fragile state. Latch still works. Cracked leather on outside, and soft worn leather on inside. It must have been something people carried around in their pockets and purses, because of the size and box. I 1st thought it to be a cigar cutter, but found others that sold on ebay, and saw it was for blood letting. It will be packaged well for shipping.
