Antique Gold Plated Medical Instrument Ebony Handle Bleeder?
This is an antique gold plated medical instrument. It is 6 1/4" long. It has an ebony handle. There are no makers marks. The screw on the top on the handle has the number"206" The screw lock sliders, are marked"1" and"2" The tip cover piece was made with 3 splits. 2 of tips have gone missing, see photo. When the tip cover piece is removed, it exposes a small sharp spear shaped needle. When the numbered screws are loosened, they do not slide, stuck. The only visible damage to the instrument. Is to the tip, which also has missing plating. The balance of the plating is good, there is a small none separated crack in the handle. I do not know for sure what the instrument was used for, but the spear tip is sharp enough to easily pierce the skin, if used for bleeding. The housing on this model measures 1 ½” X 1 ¾” X 1 ½”The blades are all present. No chips or missing edges. This design goes back a long way. Up for auction is a 3" long when shut Revolutionary War Bleeder. This bleeder has 3 blades when opened is 5-5/8" long. It is 7/8" tall by 3/8" thick. Partial Brass. There is a slight chip on one of the handles and there is a slight bend to the entire piece. The handles are steer handles. This is the information that we have on it: This item was purchased on Sunday November 29. 1981 from Carol lewis in an Antique Shop in Amelia, Ohio for 45.00. She purchased it at auction of the Vernon Combs Estate in Lindale, Ohio. She said Dr. Sotherland of Cincinnati had looked at the bleeder earlier that day. This type of bleeder is pictured on page 187 in a book titled, Collectors Illustrated and Encyclopedia of the American Revolution. By: George C. Newman and Frank J. Kravic. Published by Castle Books August of 1977. This bleeder ... moreis dated 1770's int he book and is signed Cecil T. Beckett, Cincinnati, Ohio. I know nothing about this except what I see. It looks like a bleeder to me. But not sure. The end is sharp and the small bone mounted in the big end looks like a spout to drain the blood into a container. Primitive antique fixed blade lancet/ bleeder. Looks to be an early hand made item. 5 1/4" long. Turned wooden handle with original green paint and sterling silver applique embellishment. Difficult to detect in the pics but it is marked"STERLING" Some paint loss towards the front of the handle. Some minor surface rust on the blade but that will clean up easily and the blade is in good original condition.

This a spring loaded lancet or fleam used to bleed ill people. It was cocked. And the trigger fired, to drive the blade into the vein. Inside of back has Roman Numeral XIII marked in it. The letters FD on the back. Interior parts. Including the screw, are clearly hand-made. The case is probably original. There is no leather on the sides, and the leather covering in top and bottom outside is rough. Inside is much nicer. Someone has inked the date 1812. Nice handmade latch. I have always thought that this item dated from the late 18th century because of the workmanship and especially because of the fitted case which has many attributes of that time period. This item is in working order and in good condition other than some light surface rusting on the trigger which is the only part on this bleeder which is made of iron. It's paper box.Which has a leather hinge, on the back,is no longer connects the bottom to the top. It has a fine steel hook and catch,which is very typical of the late 18th century. The case is lined in velvet,sides and top. The bleeder measures 2 1/2"high and 1 3/4" across. The box is 3" high. Good luck!
