Up for auction is an original 1800's Brass Tourniquet that I believe was once part of a Surgeon's Amputation set. It is clearly marked"S. Maw& Son London" on one side of the"T" handle. The tourniquet measures approx. 3 1/4" tall and the lower base measures approx. 2 1/8" x by 1 1/2" I imagine that it was probably sold without a strap as any piece of cloth or fabric would suffice and it would not be too difficult to fashion one. Antique Medical surgical amputation knife blade scalpel Civil War era
Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I would guess this would be civil war but.it does not have a wooden handle. The handle looks. Feels like plastic.probably Bakelite. The stamp on the blade says Emerig Phila The box says W.H. Walmsley The knife and box definitely go together.to the point that the knife only fits in one way. Can not be flipped vertically. Box is velvet lined. That is all I know.not much If you have more information on this item. I would appreciate it if you would drop me an email with your thoughts. This item is in really nice condition for its age. Still sharp and the velvet is intact and in good condition. The case shows wear and tear. Readers have been kind enough to verify that ... morethis is indeed an amputation knife from around the Civil War era and suggest that the handle is ebony)

Rare Civil War Amputation Surgical Set- Complete
This a rare complete Civil War era amputation set with one tray. This set has clearly seen some use with pitting and rusting of some the instruments. Particularly the knives. The set contains multiple amputation knives, scalpels, saws, tourniquet, trephines, forceps and periosteal elevators. Some of the instruments bear the manufacturing mark of H. Kern. The box has been redone with new veneer and red velvet. There are no inscriptions on the box. The brass lock plate on the box is missing. These sets are becoming increasingly difficult to find in any condition and most, like this one have a few flaws. I have owned this set for over 25 years and it was always a popular item of discussion wherever it was displayed. I am charging $50 shipping on this set but will refund any difference once I insure and ship it. Thanks for bidding. Posted with
Rare Antique Surgical Instrument Set - Civil War Era Amputation Set
This is a very nice Civil War era amputation surgical set lined in purple velvet. The set was manufactured by Otto and Reynders. The set contains scalpels. Amputation knives and saws, tourniquet, rongeur, forceps and several needles. The largest amputation knife is not original to the kit and is clearly a modern day instrument made by Archer Co. who are well known for their reproduction instruments in the last 25 years. Civil War Era Medical Surgical Bullet Puller Extractor
These ARE NOT"Civil War Bullet Extractors" These are bar tongs for making your martinis. Seriously. Google"olive tongs" and BE AMAZED! They will not fit in a bullet wound from that time. Much less would they then open up enough inside to get a bullet out. Look how long they are. How the hell do you think that is long enough to get a bullet out! They aren't even good at picking up olives WHICH THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR. These were made in the 1970s. Not the 1870s. If someone is selling these to you as"Civil War Bullet Extractors" they are either stupid or cheating you. or both. Who knows. Stop the madness. and wasting your money!

ANTIQUE SURGICAL AMPUTATION KNIFE 19th century medical Indian or Civil war ?
Estate sale find! Very old 19th century i believe medical surgen amputation knife. The knife is stamped with the makers name' LENTZ& SONS' The knife has a total length of 12 inches with a long slender double edged blade length of 7 3/4 inch. Appears to be a black ebony wood checkered handle 4 1/4 inches long 1/2 inch wide. I would rate this in very good condition considering it's age. There is an age crack in the handle showing in the last picture that is pretty minor, the handle is solid and tight to the blade, some dark rust stains on the blade or beautiful aged patina whichever you prefer to call it. CIVIL WAR ERA SURGICAL AMPUTATION SAW AND FLESH KNIVE
At the onset of the Civil War the Federal Medical Dept. had but 62 surgeons assigned to military hospitals. Throughout the war years the number of amputations being performed in field tent hospitals rose to more than 50,000. The 58 and 69 calibers soft lead bullets impacting and shattering bone made amputation the only life saving method of preventing gangrene. Surgical amputation saws were in short supply and the North contracted with individual saw manufacturers to produce an inexpensive combination flesh knife and bone saw. At least 10 different companies produced the same saw which was patterned after the French knife/saw made by"Peugeot Freres" The last three photos are of this knife/saw. I have owned these saws that were made by Boynton, Charles Disston, Henry Disston and others. Further adding to the need for this saw is ... morethat the South with little or no source of acquiring medical instruments relied upon their cavalry to target Union medical wagon convoys and capture much needed supplies. The book"Doctors in Grey" states that amputations in the South were being performed with carpenter saws. Artery retractors were made by bending the tine on a table fork or making one from the wire bail of a water bucket. Ink scrapers used as scalpels. This knife-saw measures 17 inches in overall length with a blade of almost 11 inches. Sharpened on one side as a flesh knife and a bone saw on the other side, The surgeon need only to rotate it in his hand to switch functions. With the number of wounded being treated after a major battle, speed was of the utmost importance. A good surgeon could perform an amputation in 10 minutes and call out"next" A church being used to treat the wounded after the battle at Gettysburg had holes drilled into the floor to drain off the blood. Severed limbs were simply tossed out an open window. Such was the practice of Civil War medicine as performed in the field. Condition of this saw is very good for it's more than 150 years of age. The wood handle is intac

Set 2 Antique c1860's Civil War Era Hey's Saws Surgical Medical Trepanation
Set 2 Antique c1860's Civil War Era Hey's Saws Surgical Medical Trepanation For your consideration today is this set of two antique Hay's surgical saws. They were invented by and named after surgeon William Hay who lived from the mid 1700's to the early 1800's. These particular instruments were used in trephine operations on the skull to reduce fractures of bones of the skull. They were frequently found in a doctor's surgical kit during the Civil War. Both pieces are in pretty decent condition for their age. The saw with the blue tinted blade has some minor rusting on the blade itself. But all of the teeth are straight and sharp. There is also some rust buildup on the handle under the ebony portion. It has caused some minor splitting on the end. I believe that you could probably remove the wood and clean up the rust ... moreif so inclined. The middle of the handle also has 3 letters stamped into it, which I believe to be the initials of the owner. The other saw has some rust spots on the head, but the teeth are all straight and sharp as well. The handle appears to have been subject to liquid damage at one time as there is some damage to the wood portion as well as some rust under the wood. The neck of the handle is also marked with"28" but I do not know if it is original. Overall these are two very nice pieces to add to your collection! Please email us with any questions. These were John Wiegand and Thomas Snowden, surgical instrument makers and partners in Philadelphia, PA, from 1824-1855. There are 13 instruments as listed below. These descriptions are not intended to deceive as I have no medical knowledge or background. Just research using Dr. Dammann's Civil War Instruments and Equipment Encyclopedia as reference) Three shell bloodletting lancets in butterfly wing casings. Two marked, some chips to tortoise shell ... morecovers Hollow metal drainage or catheter tube? Metal tweezers Two tenaculum in shell holders Metal probe Metal'scoop' perhaps a bullet probe? Two curved bistouries. One ebony and one shell Curved metal clamp/forceps Lancet or hatchet scalpel with chipped shell holder This kit is very similar to the one shown in Dr. Dammann's book. On page 28, illus. 24. This kit is from a doctor's estate. I will ship Priority Mail with insurance. I wrap with care so please bid with confidence. Please read paragraphs below. DETAILS: I will ship within 5 days of receiving payment. You will receive this item in good shape-it will be well wrapped and well packed using bubble wrap and packing peanuts. ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR ERA SOLID BRASS SERRATED SURGICAL SCISSOR CLAMPING INSTRUMENT
Up for auction is this Civil War era solid brass medical/surgical instrument. The tool is a scissors like forcep like instrument with serrated edges on the clamping end. It measures about 8 1/2 inches long and opens as wide as about 7 1/2 inches. It is in nice shape w/ a wonderful antique patina to the brass. It was probably used. According to a doctor friend of ours, for removing foreign objects(ie-shrapnel during the Civil War! from the body during surgery. It could have also been used to assist the birthing process( although the serrated edges on the ends would put an unsightly mark on the baby's head so. The piece is in wonderful working order and has a great antique patina to the brass. It is not factory marked which indicates that it is quite old! The piece came from the estate of Dr. Elizabeth Doris Labovitz. A Philadelphia area ... moredoctor who collected antique medical items. Her father, Harry, and Mother, Bertha, were also doctors as well as her grandparents. A great find and wonderful medical oddity! As always, NO RESERVE! A great addition to any antique medical. Surgical, Steam Punk or oddity collection! We accept only PAYPAL. Pennsylvania residents please add 6% sales tax. As required by law. 14 day return guarantee.

19th Century Pre Civil War Trepanning Medical Surgical Set, Madeira Philadelphia
Wife and I have had this set for some time. 9 7/8 x6 1/2 x 1 7/8 It was purchased in the Philadelphia area about 15 years ago. Not much is known by me about its history but Madeira is supposed to be a medical manufacturer in Philadelphia. This much I was told when it was purchased. I do not know and do not have the reference material to fact check this. There are two trepans of different sizes-some corrosion but checkering in excellent. A scalpel, a lifting tool, a brush and a Hey saw. My wife was in medical school at the time and this seemed a nice gift. At this time it does not fit in with what we collect and it has been carefully stored for all this time. The lock works and it is original as received. It has not been polished, cleaned or altered to the best of my knowledge. I would say this set was unused. It is really a beautiful to look ... moreat and a little gruesome! Assume nothing, Do your research, ASK your QUESTIONS and I will do my best to answer them. If you want additional images I can send them to you via email. I prefer CONUS shipment please. Payment within 3 days of auction end. I will be traveling for a week starting on the 16th but that won't affect shipping. Thanks for looking and all the best.

Antique Médical Surgical Tool Trephine Nickel Plated Civil War Era With bone
This is a surgical instrument called a trephine that was used for the operation known as trephination(or Trepanation)To relieve pressure in the skull. It bores a small hole and removes a disk of bone. These were used in human as well as Veterinary medicine(especially in horses) This particular one looks very old. It is nickel plated and has a removable handle, and a rusted iron or steel burr(or cutting head) It could be as old as Civil War era, and certainly any good civil war surgeon would have had one in his bag. It measures about 4 1/2" long and interestingly if you look into the"business end" of the piece, there is a disk of bone remaining inside. I couldn't say whether it is human bone or animal. I see no marks on the piece except for the number 22 found on the tang of the handle.
