I have no proof of this other than the Crown mark. no other markings that i can find. the spoon was lost at some point in time and was replaced with a piece of old fine copper wire, formed in a loop at the end. The vessel has tarnish, mostly from me holding it in my hands because when i first got it, it had much less tarnish on it.in photos it appears a gold/ bronze color. looks silver in person. it's such an interesting piece and quiet the conversation piece. hence me holding it alot! i have no idea if it's plated or sterling. all i know is it's an awesome AUTHENTIC Opium/ snuff container form the 1800's. found in a storage locker containing household items from an old estate in texas. i am basing my price on just that. Label says BROWN MIXTURE, NF, EACH FLUID OUNCE CONTAINS OPIUM.219 GRAIN, ALCOHOL 9 TO 11% WARNING-MAY BE HABIT FORMING. No kidding, if the opium doesn’t get you the alcohol will! One label was used before the labeling laws. And one label was used after. These labels are from the same Pharmacy and for the same Compound Syrup of White Pine. One of the labels predates any labeling laws. So the contents were not listed. Anyone purchasing this Compound Syrup of White Pine would assume they were purchasing a harmless ... moresyrup coming from pines. The other label is for the same syrup- but it shows the contents to be Alcohol.6 percent. Morphine Sulphate 0.23 gr. and Chloroform 2.88 minims in fluidounce. It is easy to see why people were amazed when they found out what was in the medicines they had been purchasing for years and giving to their families and children. The early Ferguson's labels are rustic old labels. They are the kind of labels like you would expect Doc Holiday's Medicine bottle labels would have looked like in the Old West. Or in the old Cowboy Movies. These labels were purchased from the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies. At the Historical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John B Ferguson was a chemist and druggist who had a Pharmacy on the South East Corner of Howard and Thompson Streets in Philadelphia. This is a detailed handcarved opium snuff bottle and the pictures give a better description. I don't know the exact age but it is vintage. The inlay is a picture of a lake surrounded by mountains with 2 boats and a house under a tree. I believe this is initialed/signed either the writing on the back or the red marking on the inlay. It is about 3" long. 1 and 1/2" wide and about 3/4" thick. There is a crack next to the inlay(see pic) This will make a great addition to any collection. Silver Snuff. Opium Bottle with spoon I bought this little bottle at an estate sale. The folks were older and world travelers. Most of what they had to sell was Asian. And Tibetan Art. I'm not sure exactly where this bottle was made? It has turquoise and coral beads with a tiny spoon on the chain which is connected to the stopper. E. R. Squibb& Sons Brown Mixture Compound Bottle The bottle itself measures 3-1/4" tall. Opium is listed on the label as an ingredient. The top edge of the glass bottle has an inconspicuous 1/4" line that is either an old scuff of sort. Or it could be maker related. An underside corner of the bottle has a small area of tiny bites. The back of the bottle has some minor scratching. The bottle does wobble a bit on the table. The label has a nasty amount of darkening. Discoloration, loss, fading and edge wear. The loss is rather evident on the ingredient side with some of the text being illegible. A front bottom corner of the label has been pushed up a noticeable amount. The narcotic stamp on the back has quite a bit of the same sort of wear. Many of the tight spots around the label and stamp are dirty. The cork does come out with ... moreease. However, the cork certainly is well worn, dulled and darkened. The bottle is empty, but the inside of the bottle definitely needs a detailed cleaning. The cork is missing. The top edge of the bottle has an approximate 1/4" discolored rough spot. I assume this blemish was caused by a rub or bump. But I do believe it may be partially maker related. The top edge as a whole is rather crude- difficult for me to tell what may be bites and what is maker related pitting of sort. Either way, the top edge clearly has several insignificant imperfections. The glass bottle does wobble a little on the table. The inside is dirty with a lot of dust and residue. It was won at estate auction some time ago as part of the owner's collection. It was probably made in China in the Victorian era. It is a very solid glass bottle that measures 2 5/8 inches tall, 1 1/2 inches across and about 7/8 inch deep. The glass is really unusual. The inside(almost like a liner) is milk white and barely transparent. The outside is clear transparent with a beautiful incised pattern. There are maroon angel fish(perhaps applied? on each side. The base and the cap are also maroon. The bottle originally was used as an opium/snuff bottle but the estate owner used her collection on her dressing table to hold rings. The bottle in today’squestion is actually a snuff bottle and has nothing whatever to do with opium. Snuffbottles were primarily used by the Chinese during the Qing(or Ch’ing) Dynasty(1644 to 1912) They contained powdered snuff and had a small spoon attached tothe top that was used to remove the product from the bottle. At this time.Smoking in China was forbidden, but snuff was allowed because it was consideredto be something of a medicine and used to treat colds, headaches and stomachdisorders. Thisparticular bottle is made from cinnabar. Which is a type of lacquer that is avermilion-red in color.
