Nice smaller size mortar and pestle in original turquoise paint. This is unusual for a couple of reasons. First. It is made from lignum vitae and is very heavy,and second it has a pestle made with wood and ceramic. My guess is that it was used in a pharmacy or doctors office. It has a beautiful shade of blue and stands out from the usual blue colors seen on these. Beautiful brass mortar and pestle. Bought at an estate sale and from my brief research. It appears to be of German origin from 18th or 19th century. Mortar is stamped on the bottom with an"8" and what appears to be a fir tree. The pestle is stamped with a"4" Mortar is 4.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide. Pestle is a little more than 6 inches long. Heavy brass- first pic shows the scale and the weight of over 3 pounds. Great apothecary patina. Paypal only. This antique mortar is 7 ¾ inches high and 5 ½ inches in diameter. It is hand turned and we believe it is made of maple. The pestle is 10 inches long and 2 ¾ inches at the widest part. The mortar has its original red paint and there are remnants of red paint on the pestle. This dates to the 19 th century. The set is quite heavy weighing 3 ½ lbs. Early Antique Wooden Mortar and Pestle with cast Iron hoops and pestle
Wonderful 18th or maybe even 17th century primitively decorated wooden mortar with cast iron bands with large iron pestle. A museum piece. The wooden mortar which stands 7.2 inches tall(20cm) and measures 4.1 inches(10.5cm) across at the top is decorated with a primitive banding.It has two cast iron hoops. I have taken this mortar and pestle to a few antique experts. One thought the primitive banding was a typical 17th century style decoration, another expert thought it was 18th century. Both experts thought that the cast iron hoops were maybe attached at a later date as the mortar has a crack in the wood. This crack is actually right through the mortar. It really is in two halves now but obviously held together by the two cast iron hoops.The large pestle is made of cast iron. This is most probably the original as it fits in well with the ... moresize and depth of the mortar. It is balanced well. The top of the pestle has a small piece out of it, this must have happened a long time ago as the patina is the same all over. The pestle is 14 inches in length(35cm)The patina on both the mortar and pestle is beautiful.The mortar has had woodworm but has been treated but the holes are still there. These can be closed with brown wax if you chose to do so. All in all a rare wonderful early wooden example of a mortar and pestle. this is an exquisite very rare early 1800's bronze handmade mortar and pestle grinder. It may even be late 1700's it is made from extremely thick heavy bronze and weighs 6 pounds. There is an S, but that is all I can discern clearly. I do not think the Coricidin pestle is not original to the mortar, and is vintage. But, I could be wrong. Mortar is 4 1/2" high and 5" diameter, and weighs about 5 1/2 pounds. The pestle is 7" high. Both are in excellent, used, antique condition, with very nice patinas. This is a BIG ONE! Solid cast brass stands 5& 3/4 inches tall with a mouth that is 6.5 inches and a base that measures almost 5 inches in diameter. The thickness of the rim is a quarter inch of solid metal. This weighs about 10 pounds with the pestle. The mortar is adorned with Latin and what looks to be an owl motif. But I cannot be sure. It has a sticker on the inside that says Made In Holland. Large brass mortar and pestle in fine shape.the pestle is a little dinged up on one end and measures just over 10 inches long and is bulbous on both ends. It is about 5.5 inches from the tip of one handle to the other. The pestle is solid and heavy. It is approximately 10.5 inches long. The ends of the pestle are approximately 2 inches in diameter. Green felt has been glued to the bottom. I have found no markings on either piece. I purchased this set(along with a nearly identical one I also have listed) from a man who operated a French restaurant.He used these as decorative items in the restaurant in the 1970's. Finally it was renamed Thomas Maddock's Sons Co. in 1903 and sold out in 1929. So, this set is dated somewhere between 1903-1929. Image 7 shows the patina of many years held by pharmacists as they mixed their compounds. It has a number 5 incised on the bottom and it is also incised with their mark which is not very clear in photos so I have included one I found online. It is the same. The marks used by Thomas Maddock& Sons are a circular ribbon containing the name of the firm name and an anchor for sanitary earthenware. This very large mortar measures 4 1/2" tall x 8" diameter. ANTIQUE NESTED MORTAR PESTLE A Wonderful Antique Set. This is a nested Mortar and Pestle Set. The pestle is wood. It measures 10 5/8" long. The bases are marked Warranted T.M. S Acid Proof. I believe this is Thomas Maddock and Sons. Which dates to the late 1800's. If anyone clues me in, I will pass it along. The smallest is marked 3/0 and measures about 3 1/2" across. The next size has an incised 1 and it measures 4 7/8" across. The large has an incised 5 and measures 8" across. The spout on the large has nicks. There's some edge roughness/wear. Beautiful small antique solid brass mortar and pestle. Started life in a pharmacy in Europe, and somehow made its way to the U.S. Has clear signs of use, though both pieces are in good condition. The patina is just to die for, mellow, deep and golden; it actually looks more like unpolished gold than brass. One of the unusual things about this set is the handles. The fingerholds are straight across the top of the handles, and angled on the bottom. I've never seen another like this, and certainly not an American piece. Just gorgeous.and could still be used if you choose to! Unsure of maker. From the last quarter of the 1800s-1900 or so. Mortar: 3" tall x 3 3/4" in diameter at the handles.
