A antique medical surgeons lithotomy urethral instrument signed TIEMANN. A civil war period instrument maker. Dates 1860s-1880. Checkered cut gutta rubber handle. Silver finished rod with groove that a fine cutting knife runs in. Blade is nice and sharp. No chips or cracks. Instrument has a wonderful color and patina, showing aged history. A rare antique medical Civil War 1860s bullet screw and sheath signed TIEMANN with a wonderful cross hatched cut ebony wood handle. Polished steel screw with silver finished sheath. This is a no reserve auction for two Civil War era surgical instruments. There is a Hey knife marked Tiemann. It measures 9 ½” Handle and blade are nice and tight with no damage. The blade does have some oxidization and slight surface rust. The next tool measures 10” long and has a loop at the end. The handle is nice and tight although there is some slight separations. 1846 TIEMANN BRASS SCARIFICATOR OBSOLETE MEDICAL SURGICAL BLOODLETTING TOOL
This offer is for the antique scarification tool shown. The scarification is accomplished by pulling the spring loaded thumb screw back. On the end of the handle, to cock the gizmo. A trigger lever releases the blades which spin out of the head, cutting the skin, and then retreat back inside.There is another thumb screw, on the head, to set the depth of cut, from just a scratch to major damage. Bloodletting was believed to rid the body of bad blood, causing fresh blood to be made. Along with mercury treatments these were some of the dark days of medicine that were often employed during the Civil War. The instrument is in good working order, of course it is not sterile and should not be tried at home. The horn handle has an age crack which is contained by the brass collar. Early Antique Civil War Era Tiemann Bakelite Medical Knife Tool. The medical tool is 100% original. Is in excellent condition, completely intact and has no cracks, chips, dings, dents or repairs with nice patina. I did not attempt to polish or clean the medical tool at all. Sorry for the glare in the photos but it could not be helped. This is a very well made tool and features a beautiful bakelite handle. Each of the blades are very sharp and each are hallmarked/stamped TIEMANN(see photos 3& 4) The blade that is curved measures about 1 7/8 inches long and the blade that is straight measures about 2 inches long. The tool measures a little more than 3 1/2 inches long when fully closed. Each of the blades open/close/lock perfectly. Comes from a smoke free/pet free home. NEW YORK CITY MAYOR "DANIEL TIEMANN" SIGNED 1859 CHECK (GREAT HISTORICAL ITEM)
This is an 1859 NEW YORK CITY check(see picture) nicely signed by MAYOR DANIEL TIEMANN. Daniel Tiemann was Mayor of New York City from 1858 through 1860. And later served in the New York State Senate from 1872 through 1873. He was an industrialist and owner of the Tiemann& Company Paint and Color Works, a paint manufacturer. Tiemann Avenue in the Bronx was named after Mayor Tiemann. Sadly, Daniel Tiemann never saw the Twentieth Century; he passed away in June 1899. This check, dated November 15, 1859, is clean and intact, exhibiting light wear and the usual four-corner cancellation tear of that era. It is also signed by the Comptroller and the Clerk, and the back of the check bears a legible endorsement by J. W. Crane. This check would make a nice addition to your own collection, or it would make a wonderful gift for that Daniel Tiemann ... moreenthusiast, New York historian, or vintage autograph collector in your life! Dr Cammann's Stethoscope by Tiemann
A very nice Dr Cammann's Stethoscope. The biggest flaw in this stethoscope is that someone has repaired the bell with too thick a layer of glue and it can be seen from the outside so please look at the pictures carefully. I tried to get as accurate a pictures as I could but the gutta percha or hard rubber is more light brown than the pictures and the tubing is lighter colored.The chrome on the earpieces is every bit as nice as the pictures indicate.The actual earpieces are intact and the tubing has no fraying. If it weren't for the glued bell it would be just about perfect. Capital Style Bone Saw, possibly Tiemann And 3 Other Instruments
An expert seeing these pictures told me it was most likely an American saw ca. 1870 or so. A Tiemann most likely or maybe a Sharp and Smith. The markings have worn out if it was marked. The marking 11 I believe refers to the size. The condition is very good, well balanced, the handle appears to have no cracks or repairs, and everything is straight. CIVIL WAR G. TIEMANN TOOTH PULLER, TOOTH CRACKER...AS PICTURED
This Civil War period medical device was called by a number of names.tooth puller or tooth crackers were just a couple. It is a fearful looking. Long-handled device with pointed head at the end, which vaguely resembled a pair of pliers! It was used by period dentists to pull teeth. There is a similar example of a tooth extractor on page 103 of Dr. Francis Lord's reference book. The Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia. Volume V. I have scanned that page and included it here for your convenience. It has a beautiful attic gray patina with no rust or pitting. This is an antique boxed surgical set made by G. Tiemann& Co. circa 1860. The address label on the inside of the lid(a gilt stamped oval of black leather) reads: G. Tiemann& Co. Manufacturers of Surgical Instruments. 63 Chatham ST NY. Tiemann was at this address betwen 1833 to 1864. In 1864. The company moved to 67 Chatham St. The wooden box measures 6 1/2 inches long X 4 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches high. The lower case holds 8 tools with bone handles and two separate attachments. The handle are each stamped"G. Tiemann. The blade of the scalpel is also stamped"G. Tiemann. The upper compartment hold two pairs of tweezers and a scissors. The box in good/ fair condition due to paint splatters on the lid and it is missing the owner's identification plate. The hinges& hook locks are in good working order. SUPERB 1864-1886 GEORGE TIEMANN 29pc SURGEON'S SET w/ORIGINAL ROSEWOOD BOX Presented is a wonderful surgical set by George Tiemann& Co. This set dates to around 1864-1886. Based on the address of the company as it appears on the inside of the box. The set includes 29 pieces, not including the needles. The case is quite sturdy, made from beautiful rich rosewood, with a brass plaque in the lid, which has not been engraved. The interior is lined in red velvet. The handles of the tools are made from rich dark wood, probably ebony. This set came to us from a local family, from a woman whose grandfather and great grandfather were both surgeons, this is absolutely an authentic set. Given the date range, it's entirely possible that this is a Civil War era set, used ... moreby a Union surgeon. Whatever the case may be, this is a great old surgical set, and would be an exceptional addition to any collector of medical antiques. This set is in great overall condition. We do not have all the pieces. As there are some empty slots in the box, but the majority of the tools are present and all are original. The pieces are clean and in good shape, and the blades are sharp. The exterior of the case has some wear, as you would expect, but nothing significant or effecting the structural integrity of the box. 1860’s SMALL STEEL BIVALVE MEDICAL SPECULUM. Offered is an antique Medical Speculum. Made in the middle 1850's or early 1860s. It was made by George Tiemann& Co. The name“TIEMANN& CO. appears on one arm of the speculum. It is 6 1/4" long. The company was well known for making surgical instruments during the Civil War. The antique Speculum is in excellent condition and the instrument is functional. If you have any questions. Please email me!
