Listed is an odd and unusual 1863(Civil War Era) advertisement for J. Ball& Co. EYE CUP taken from a March 7. 1863 Harper's Weekly periodical. It seems to be a rubber ball attached to a metal cup and when you put a liquid in the ball, you squeeze the ball and the liquid goes into your eye. I am not sure how much this invention was utilized. Old Clear Glass Pedestal Eye Wash Cup This is a very nice eye wash cup made of clear glass with an eight-panel design and a wide rim. The panels of the bowl continue down the pedestal stem but the base is smooth aside from 2 lines which appear to be seams. The bottom is clearly marked with a capital M inside a diamond with a small number 8 above the M. I have been unable to identify the maker. This cup stands 2-3/8 inches high with the oval rim measuring 1-1/2 inches by 1-1/8 inches. I am not sure of the age of the cup- I am not an expert. A good conversation starter to display in your glass collection! Condition: Excellent. No flaws noted. The glass is clear. There are no chips, nicks or cracks. The rim is nice and smooth. This particular one has some glass imperfections including a light irregular interior line about 1cm down from the top. And on one end of the top lip there is a raised dimple that was never shaved down correctly with a small indentation which could be an old bubble burst at time of manufacture. Vintage glass eye wash cup? primitive
Here we have today is a really unique piece of primitive glass. I think it is an eye was cup. The way the piece is shaped and the size, that is the only thing I could think it was. Piece is in vintage condition, looks very old, has the remains of applied silverplate grape leaver and vine, there is also some black residue on the inside which I could not get out. The piece is 3 1/4" tall, and 1 1/2" square. There are no makers marks and it looks to be a hand blown item. Will combine shipping and thanks for looking! All items that we sell are used.
