Another Victorian era beadwork and needlepoint fire screen panel. Large and lush with florals and flags and the English Royal crest at center. This would have been a large fire screen for the hinged apparatus that clamped to a mantel, allowing the guest to adjust the angle and position. Meant to guard a person's face from too much direct heat as the person sat close enough to the big old fireplaces to warm up, we find quite a few of this type in good condition for their age. Every well-staffed and appointed Victorian home would have had several. This one, however, is particularly spectacular and elegant, and is so well preserved it would make up into a fabulous down-filled throw pillow top. Lush fringe and perhaps tassels- can't you just see it in your home. I might make it up and pull from shop so don't hesitate if you really want this one. I've been hoarding it, but haven't found the time to sew. Simply stunning old treasure! Image Hosting by Ruby Lane Return Policy: We always honor a 3-day return on our items. Be sure to click here to add us to your Favorite Ebay Seller's List. We'll be sending out sale notices and special deals to our'Favorites' customers. Worked entirely in heavy old glass beads. This Victorian panel has been well preserved under glass and in frame since it was made. Needlework was the art of the female sex, you know, as the serious formal arts were reserved almost entirely for men through to nearly mid-1900s, so the old hand sewn works hold special meaning and represent one of the few creative outlets for women. Particularly up until late 1800s, women were not educated in arena other than household arts(sewing, music like piano or singing, perhaps pencil sketching but not usually oil painting and almost never sculpture) This is a wonderful small framed work for wall or shelf display, vivid palette and not a single bead missing. Exotic song bird on a branch of a wreath of oranges and flowers, it is worked against a background of white opaline beads. All beads you see represent a single stitch for each one. Would have perhaps been a sampler project for a young girl. The frame is the old type we see in Georgian England or Louis-Philippe era in France, c. 1830-50. A Fabulously Beautiful Antique Victorian Beadwork Embroidery-Angel and Child.
I can truly say that in my opinion this is one of the most beautiful Beadwork pieces that I have ever seen or sold. This is an Antique Victorian Beadwork Embroidery Shield Shaped Panel that dates I believe to around 1880. It depicts an Angel carrying a child on her back. The Beadwork is to the entire panel with only the brown areas being embroidered in wool. The Embroidery has been backed with brown silk. And has along the top edge a number of hooks. The Panel has some braid along the top edge which hangs down the sides-this needs re-attaching in places. The braid ends with two large Beadwork tassels on each side. The Panel measures approximately 22.5 inches(plus the Beadwork fringing measuring another 3 inches) x19.25 inches(plus the Beadwork fringing measuring another 0.75 inches on each side) PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR OVERSEAS POSTING I SHALL ... moreHAVE TO LOOSELY ROLL THE PANEL IN ORDER TO KEEP POSTAL COSTS DOWN. AS IF WRAPPED FLAT THE POSTAGE WILL BE HIGH DUE TO THE SIZE. A truly glorious addition to any home or Beadwork Embroidery collection. It weighs approximately 1.140 kgs. Any minor signs of wear. Such as some bead loss to the fringing, are commensurate with age and use. The Panel itself has the most minimal Bead loss(in fact I have struggled to find any missing beads)

Zulu beadwork has been valued as currency. As decoration, and as a marker of identity. Hlengiwe wrote(pp.43-46) Bead adornments are closely associated with courtship and marriage. And the period of maximum adornment spans the time of feminine fertility. Love messages are transmitted in a most confidential manner, i.e. through beads. Traditional Zulu women always respect their husbands and believe that if they want anything they may write a letter made from beads to pass the message. For s

EXCEPTIONAL, GORGEOUS LARGE, FRAMED 19TH C. SCENIC ENGLISH VICTORIAN BEADWORK
I doubt that you will ever see another English Victorian beadwork so spectacular as this one. And in such fantastic condition. The colors are as vibrant, I’m sure, as the day it was made. It must have taken an unimaginable amount of time to make it– it is all beads, no needlepoint stitching and as far as I can see there are only about 4 beads missing in the greenery to the left of the placid lake. I was given the piece many years ago and eventually had it professionally framed and matted. I’ve had it displayed on the antique bamboo easel I’m selling separately. The beadwork itself measures approximately 21-1/2” x 18” the framed size is 31-3/4” x 28-1/4” Normally I pack and ship items myself. But in this case I’ll require the help of the professionals at the UPS store in the town 20 miles away. I’m including a $5 handling charge to cover gas ... moreexpenses and some of the packing material I’ll take care of myself. The cost is going to be high. Figure at least $75. I won’t know until the Store has it ready to go. I’ll quote $80 including handling, but please understand this is not a final figure; it may be less, in which case I will refund the excess, or it may very well be more and I’ll ask you for the difference. Also, I may need a little more time than usual for shipping. NO OVERSEAS SALES FOR THIS ITEM. I’M SORRY. PayPal Payment within 3 days of auction end. If you are a resident of Washington State please pay the sales tax applicable at your residence or if you are a business owner. Please provide Resale Tax Number.

Antique 2 vintage glass beadwork trim from 1920's? 3+yards by 1/2 inch wide.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be listing loads of lace items. All were given to me 40 years ago by a 90 year old woman. Who has worked as a seamstress in London from the age of 10 years old! so the pieces I have are from about 1886 onwards. Nonw of the lace[this piece or any I will be offering] has a musty smell, but it does need washing to remove yellowing from age. I used many of the pieces I had in dressing antique dolls that I had either collected or reproduced myself. Unfortunately my hands and eyes don't enjoy doing such fine work anymore. So it's time to stop hoarding! As I am not a lace'buff' I will try to do my best in naming them. But could very well get it wrong. I much prefer to let the pictures speak for themselves. When I know a piece has faults I will mention them as well as showing them in the pictures. ... moreTo me this piece of trim work looks late Victorian to 1920's. The glass beads are black. Red, royal blue and pale blue. The beads are sewn onto fine netting and some of the original brownish paper it was sold on is still attached- so it's definitely unused! It is, obviously, pretty heavy and as I don't know what else to say, I'll finish with- it measures 3+ yards- exactly 110 inches in length by 1/2 inch wide. I can easily imagine it being worn on some rich lady's garment in the olden days! Shipping: I am always happy to combine shipping to save you money if you buy multiple pieces. Wait for the adjusted invoice for the discounted shipping amount before paying. Ask me to hold something until you are finished bidding if you would like to combine items that are ending on different days. Shipping is to U.S. only. Excluding Alaska and Hawaii[unless you are willing to pay the extra shipping cost] If anything doesn't arrive as described thereby not meeting your expectations. Please let me know, and I will work to settle things satisfactorily with you. I want you to be able to appreciate these pieces as much as I have. Thanks very much for looking and enjoy!

Zulu Beadwork Rope South Africa
Title, Zulu Beadwork. Rope South Africa, Type of Object, Beadwork. Necklace, bracelet, anklet, headband Country of Origin, South Africa, People, Zulu, Materials, Beads, Approximate Age, 1950s, Dimensions, 9 inches L. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cut strap, Additional Information: Made by beading tightly around a cotton cloth wrapped coil of grass or length of rope(umgongqolozi) Possibly from Msinga area or Ngoma. See Speaking with beads by Morris. Page 43. Umgunqulu/ Rope necklaces were worn by young engage man and women from Msinga area. Kwa-Zulu Natal. The women will wear it at any day. It is a symbol of showing how much you miss your loved one. This example is of small size. It was probably worn by a young person. Such ropes could be very long than this example and would be worn longer or rolled two or three times around the ... moreneck. We've seen women wearing several of such beaded ropes around the neck. These ropes were also worn as head bands. Or around the waist of youth. Zulu beadwork has been valued as currency. As decoration, and as a marker of identity. Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized not only the beads themselves but also the colors and designs available to groups within Shaka’s control. Beadwork became a status symbol and an important item of personal expression as well. Stylistic variations of beadwork such as pattern, color and color sequence indicate area or group affiliation. Colors and patterns take on more personally expressive meanings as in the case of Zulu “love letters.” Recently beadwork has become a symbol of political identity as well, with color and pattern indicating political affiliation. Instead of beads being worn only by the conservative, traditional members of the community, wearing beadwork is increasingly being seen as reclaiming a cultural identity. Outstanding Original Yoruba Kings Crown, Beautiful Beadwork,Truly Stunning Piece
Outstanding Yoruba Kings Crown One of the most elaborate articles to come out of Africa. Constructed and decorated with thousands of beads. Made by the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The Kings Crown is worn by royalty during tribal ceremonies. The outside is decorated with colorful and intricate beaded faces and insects. Sitting of top of the crown and a separate pice by itself is a beautiful bird. When worn the Kings face and head was surrounded by a veil made of hanging beaded cord. Crown stands 20 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Vibrant colors to bead work. Many colors including red. Blue, green, turquoise, yellows, browns, and white. Additional Info: The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. The crown itself is worshiped. It is placed upon the king's head from behind. Usually by the senior wife, because he ... moremay not look upon the bird which goes on the top, which holds powerful medicines to protect him and his destiny. The veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king's face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown. The birds on the side symbolize the fact that the king rules"only with the support of the mothers. A rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding piece of African history. Plate 68; See alsoHlengiwe Dube, ZULU BEADWORK.TALKING WITH BEAD. Made by beading tightly around a cotton cloth wrapped coil of grass or length of rope(umgongqolozi) Zulu beadwork has been valued as currency, as decoration, and as a marker of identity. Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized not only the beads themselves but also the colors ... moreand designs available to groups within Shaka’s control.
