Embroidery is quite intricate and features bow-wrapped bouquets, butterflies, birds and scroll work. Pillow insert is the original pale pink satin covered form. Pillow form appears to be filled with down. Pillow measures approximately 20" x 17" laying flat and is a generous 5" thick when fluffed up. Offered for auction today. Is this very unusual and beautiful Victorian or Edwardian era boudoir pillow cover or what have you. Honestly, I am really not sure, but I believe this is likely a cover for a pillow or some sort of bedding. It is made of the most gorgeous pink and gold woven silk floral, possibly Chinese, fabric. It measures approximately 38" square. It has a white lace and finely woven linen, cotton or silk, I am really not sure, fold over and borders. The backing is also the same white(slightly yellowed with age) fabric. There are several large stains underneath the flap(see pictures) and several more smaller ones on the backside as well. EXCEPTIONAL Antique TAMBOUR Lace CHERUB and FLOWERS Boudoir PILLOW
This beautiful little pillow measures about 12" by 16" I think this type of lace is referred to as tambour. It is very delicate and worked on a very fine net background. There is chain stitch and buttonhole embroidery to create the beautiful design of a cherub playing a flute. The cherub sits on a branch and is surrounded by large fanciful flowers. The inside pillow has a shimmery finely knit cover. It's lavender but looks blue in some pictures. The back of the pillow has an opening with two hand made buttons. There are small tears at the top and bottom of this placket. Some of the netting has small tears also. Please examine the photos carefully. Major clear out of my studio, it is now filling up fast with new auction finds. The new year began well– I was offered the fabulous contents of a Victorian linen cupboard and a family collection of lace from a local estate. I also acquired lots of new stock from two wonderful antique textile auctions- one in SW England and another in Yorkshire. I am continuing to list these items as soon as I have laundered and inspected them– lace, shawls, Edwardian and Victorian costume, a collection of buttons etc. Happy browsing! This is an extraordinary find- last week I sold a box of unused handmade pillow. Or bobbin lace, dating to around 1910, sent to England in a hand sewn cotton envelope(found in the box) ... moreAll this lace was made at the Mulagamudu Orphanage in Travancore(now the state of Kerala) on the Southern tip of India. In 1897 a group of Belgian nuns( Sisters of the Holy Heart of Mary) travelled to India where they established the Convent of The Holy Infant Jesus, and opened an orphanage at Mulagamudu, where they not only educated and cared for orphans, but also passed on their extensive knowledge and skill of lace making. The lace was sold to provide income for the orphanage- and this haul was sent to England. By 1910 there were 14 Belgian sisters at the Convent, and a growing number of lace workers, who had learned their skills from the nuns. This length, measuring 328cm x 32cm, was found in a separate parcel with the lace I sold last week- interesting, as it has an unusual boteh pattern. Lovely, interesting length of lace. It is freshly laundered with no stains or marks. NB- this listing is just for the one long length- the last 3 photographs show some of the lengths with labels- sold last week, but shown so you can see the provenance. In beautiful condition with an almost sculpted 3D look to the punched chenille work. The gold metallic and blue lace trim has approx. 2" missing or damaged. Pillow form can easily be slipped into back opeining. Probably from the early 1900's. All hand done on soft cotton velvet. This auction is for a simply lovely lacey antique boudoir pillow cover and insert. This pillow dates to around 1900. I believe the fabric of the cover is tulle– see-through and thin but dense. The fabric is soft light pink. Attached to the top of the pillow is an exquisite lace rectangle with an open center showing the pink tulle fabric at the center. The ends of the lace are tacked to the fabric. And the center perimeter is sewn to the fabric all the way around. This is a lovely light cream insert– the lace is delicate and detailed, possibly bobbin lace. It is in perfect condition. Outside that. With just a small amount of the pink fabric showing, the edges of the pillow are made ... moreof complementary cream lace, which has been hand-sewn to the fabric. The reverse side is all tulle fabric with an opening created at one end. The opening has a handkerchief hem– a wonderful detail and shows the work that went into making this cover. The two buttons have crochet covers. The pillow insert is made with pink satin, and is soft, but firm enough to lay upright. Nice collection of lace edging from early 1900's. The beige(last on 1st picture) was a top trim only and measures 16 x 4.5 inches. The 3rd picture is a knit that is very deminsional-looks like two layers. But only one measures 16 x 4 inches. The other 3 are full pillowcase trims. Two are 34 x 5 inches. One still attached by hand to pillowcase. These are each joined in a circle with a hand seam. Pillow case has lots of freckles. But lace is beautiful. The nest(1st in 2nd picture) is a smaller version of the two larger pieces- measures 39 x 3 inches. All of these pieces are in great condition and would be nice for crafts. Dolls or trim. PAIR 2 ANTIQUE NORMANDY LACE EMBROIDERY WHITE PILLOW COVERS SHAM DOILY RUNNER
Offered for auction today. Is this rare and unusual pair of late 1800's or early 1900's Normandy lace pillow covers or doilies. They are approximately 28" square and are embroidered with the monogram A. D. I believe that these were likely part of a woman's wedding trousseau. They are completely hand sewn. They are made of a very fine, slightly sheer, finely woven white linen. The color has darkened with age to an ecru or ivory color. There are a couple of small holes, see pictures, and some light staining from being in storage for many years. I have not washed these and they would likely brighten up with proper laundering, but I will leave that up to you. As they are, they are simply beautiful.
