From the Persian- Suzan which means needle. The art of making such textiles is called Suzankori(needlework) Suzanis usually have a cotton(sometimes silk) fabric base. Which is embroidered in silk or cotton thread. Chain, satin, and buttonhole stitches are the primary stitches used. There is also extensive use of couching, in which decorative thread laid on the fabric as a raised line is stitched in place with a second thread. Suzanis are often made in two or more pieces that are then stitched together. Popular design motifs include sun and moon disks, flowers(especially tulips, carnations, and irises) leaves and vines, fruits(especially pomegranates) and occasional fish and birds. The oldest surviving suzanis are from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but it seems likely that they were in use long before that. This item is in used condition and does show signs of age as well ... moreas wear. As seen in the photographs the border around the red is very brittle and is starting to split. The backside of the tapestry also has splits in it as well. There are also some water spots both on the red silk and on the back of the tapestry. It Appears that the red silk could be removed from the border as it is handstitched on and either given a new border and backing or you just the way it is. This piece is highly detailed with Dragons circling each other on the front as well as a lot of floral and leaf work that is all individually threaded and hand sewn. Again this piece is old and does show signs of wear. It could be hung on a wall the way it is and the flaws would not be extremely noticeable. The top of the tapestry has eight black loops to slide a pole or rod through. I would reinforce these loops again as the fabric is brittle that they are sewn onto. The entire width of the piece is 76 inches wide by 86 inches tall. The red silk section is 66 inches wide and 80 inches tall. The fabric does have an age smell to it from being stored in a trunk that was in an attic. It does not smell moldy or it has no mold on it. Thanks for looking and have a great day! Posted with

This would have been a large fire screen for the hinged apparatus that clamped to a mantel, allowing the guest to adjust the angle and position. Meant to guard a person's face from too much direct heat as the person sat close enough to the big old fireplaces to warm up, we find quite a few of this type in good condition for their age. Every well-staffed and appointed Victorian home would have had several. This one, however, is particularly spectacular and elegant, and is so well preserved it would make up into a fabulous down-filled throw pillow top. ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BELL / DAMPER PULL TAPESTRY NEEDLEPOINT & BEAD EMBROIDERY
Absolutely stunning antique Swedish embroidered bell pull dating back to the mid 19th century. This piece has gorgeous floral needlepoint embroidery in wool enriched with bead embroidered oak leaves( and edges. In Sweden these pulls were more commonly used as decorations on the pull chains of the damper. That are external on most Swedish fireplaces. The piece is in great used condition; the colours are quite clear and strong. There are only a few stitches, bearly noticable, and very few beads missing. In the upper part(between the rose and it's leaves, see picture) there is a small tear, or more precisely in the canvas but not in the embroidery. Edged with antique braid, lining is intact and the brass handle is beautifully ornate with grapes and vine leaves. Measures approx. 3.7" wide and 29" in length. On the top reads"In Memory of My Cruise to the Philippine Islands" A black and white photo of a handsome young man surrounded by red/teal/silver thread design. The E Pluribus Unum looks white in the photos but it's actually pink. The eagle and other decorative elements are in good condition. Nothing loose. The bottom has the young man's name"Gustav Hasselberg" with Hawaii above his name, China to the left, and Japan to the right. Overall good condition to the fabric, nothing ripped or torn. It's not often that you come across one of these in such good condition. This item will be sold as you see it here. I cannot be certain of when this piece dates to as I have not come across this style of embroidery before. I would however think there is a certain amount of age to it. The material used is filled in completely with something similar to herringbone stitch embroidery. Which means this is a weighty piece of fabric. It is very cleverly worked, with the stitches flowing in varying directions to add texture and movement. The coloursof the yarns are stunning, cleverly blending and off setting each other in tones of mauves, greys, blues, white and browns. The way it is worked is almost like a piece that has been knitted in stocking ... morestitch. I believe it is French in origin was most likely produced by Neyret Freres. This item is from a estate. It had been professionally matted and framed under glass. The frame is 19" x 14" The actual silk work is 11 1/2" x 7 1/2" I did lighten the photos to show more detail. Hard to get a good photo of the actual look of the silk. My photos of it do not do it justice. In real life the silk is bright and has shimmer, the coloring of the silk changes according to the light and the angle of the picture when looking at it. Antique India Fabulous OLD Tapestry Embroidered Bedspread Hanging 104" x 90"
This is such a beautiful Tapestry or spread which you can display on your wall. Over a bed, or even as a coverlet. It is shown on a queen sized bed so you can see its large size in first image-measures appx 104" x 90" I don't believe it was intended simply to be a bedspread. Although that is certainly a nice use for it. I believe it dates somewhere around1920s- It appears to be from India. The back is a brown muslim type material and the front has two layers of material with the top appearing to be sheer silk in some areas. Extensive embroidery of flowers. Elephants, birds, swirls, etc. in rich colors of gold, greens, reds, etc. truest colors most like first image in natural light) It is quite beautiful and the images do not do it justice. I find very few minor defects-this is NOT a new piece. So there are some loose threads, ... moresome thinner areas of silk, a few missing stitches, but quite wonderful overall given age. It has been carefully stored for years so no fade. Moth holes, etc. although it has a very slight"older textile" scent. I would not normally part with this piece. Some of the old binding needs to be stitched back in place here and there and when you look close you can see that the picture part has some little holes and thread runs through it. But not very noticeable till you look close. Exact age is unknown but it is very old you can see that by the old fabric binding around it and after all it's been quite awhile since there were any Buggys around but as thick and heavy as it is I'm sure it kept someone very warm. The back side is solid black horsehair and the front side is a very scratchy material such as a very coarse wool. Would look great as a Wall hanging or rug. I have not tried to clean this and I'm sure it needs it but I don't want to take a chance on ruining it. The way the colors run into each other gives the impression of a fine watercolor painting. The needlepoint is in excellent condition(no missing stitches. It is in excellent strong condition and would be suitable for making into cushion- pillow- covers or many another sewing project. It is a good width measuring 11.2 ins(28.5cm) wide and a super length of 69.3 ins(176cm) Each end is angled as can be seen but the length measurement given excludes the'points' so covers the usable full width area. The tapestry was probably made in Belgium although there are no markings to indicate its origin. There is a piece of slim wood attached to the top of the tapestry for hanging purposes and the country of origin could be under that piece of wood. Very good condition for an old tapestry, still very colorful with no rips or discoloration. The edges are worn and the two side edges have some fringes missing thru the years. EXQUISITE Antique Vintage Needlepoint Tapestry Tudor Women Animals Embroidery
This is s lovely antique or very vintage hand made framed tapestry.It is made of wool needlework with the flesh on the women made of pettipoint. It has a midevil or Tudor era look with the costumes the women are wearing. There are several animals worked into the pattern as well. I am certain it was professionally framed. I removed a part of the backing and it shows that the textile is much older then the frame. The size is 25 X 36 Inches including the frame. This textile is in excellent condition with minor fading. I estimate it is late 19th C. This comes fresh yesterday from a very high end mansion estate in Duluth Minnesota.

Wall hanging 19th/20c( 4 gentleman and a lady Excellent condition Size: 55" x 37" inches = 140cm x 94 cm. This is an antique tapestry wall hanging it is of a lady in a Parlour with three genelman it looks like the lady is playing the piano. There are a number of detailed pictures on the wall. The tapestry is a brownish thread with some muted pinks greens and gold through out it on the jackets with black shoes on the gentleman. There is a water stain on the lower right hand side and a spot approx as large as one inch. Other than the stain and spot there are no rips or stains looks to be in very good condition. It is entirely handwoven like 17th Century European tapestries and you can see the wool threads throughout. it is a bit faded on one side. It depicts a bazaar scene with various merchants.
