Hi and up for bid is this gorgeous embroidered bedspread. I believe it is a twin size. Or as some would say a double bed. Very pretty. The photos I believe make the color of the spread a little lighter and paler than it actually is. Yellowish embroidery. Found a couple of small stains which are shown in the last photo. It has not been cleaned or ironed and sold as is. No returns so please ask any questions prior to bidding that may be of importance to you. This item is for the lower us states only. This auction is for a beautiful vintage/antique hand-crochet bedspread. It is very large as you can see by my pic s. My bed is only a full size and the spread swallows it! I think for its size it would be perfect as a canopy as well. You can see how long it is and I have it doubled over at the pillows. I t has been stored and smells a little musky. Needs washed. I don't thin k it w as used. I could find no signs of dry rot or holes. It is very sturdy cotton which is good beca use it is HEAVY. I did notice some brown spots as I was folding it but they are not noticeable when displayed. I didn' t see them when I was taking the pics. I tried to get a pic of one but it doesn't show up in the pic. Overall i t's a gorgeous spread and a real treasure. The flash in them last pic makes it appear very thin and webby. Antique India Fabulous OLD Tapestry Embroidered Bedspread Hanging 104" x 90"
This is such a beautiful Tapestry or spread which you can display on your wall. Over a bed, or even as a coverlet. It is shown on a queen sized bed so you can see its large size in first image-measures appx 104" x 90" I don't believe it was intended simply to be a bedspread. Although that is certainly a nice use for it. I believe it dates somewhere around1920s- It appears to be from India. The back is a brown muslim type material and the front has two layers of material with the top appearing to be sheer silk in some areas. Extensive embroidery of flowers. Elephants, birds, swirls, etc. in rich colors of gold, greens, reds, etc. truest colors most like first image in natural light) It is quite beautiful and the images do not do it justice. I find very few minor defects-this is NOT a new piece. So there are some loose threads, ... moresome thinner areas of silk, a few missing stitches, but quite wonderful overall given age. It has been carefully stored for years so no fade. Moth holes, etc. although it has a very slight"older textile" scent. I would not normally part with this piece. The name we use(Marcella) derives from this type of French bedspread- the manufacture of these quilts developed ... morein the 19th century the port town of Marseille. Hence the name. This is a large and exquisite example, with deeply embossed patterns of flowers. Two of the edges have hand crocheted edging(the side edges) whilst the top and bottom are plain. This is in excellent condition, with no damage that I can spot, and a lovely, freshly laundered snowy white. It measures 264cm x 252cm, and I have shown it on a king size four poster. It is a beautiful spread, and could be from France, as the design elements are very thick and stand out beautifully. This is not like the matelassé that is found today– it is lush and thick. In addition, the bedspread is made to fit a four-post bed, with the bottom of the spread having a cut out area to fit around the poster. The pictures certainly do not do this piece justice, especially because I had to take them on ... morethe dining room table as it does not fit a queen bed. I believe(and you can determine for yourself by the measurements below) that this fits a double or full bed. It is in a white-ivory in color. Not bright white, but more muted like ivory. The border of the top of the bedspread has fuzzy floral designs bordering a superb center of water lilies and scrollwork. It is absolutely the nicest design I have seen on these– not a cookie-cutter design as most are. The entire top is bordered by large dots within lines. The drop of the bedspread; that is, the sides, begin with the fuzzy floral elements(roses, I believe) and ends in a scalloped edge that is a checkerboard design. Stunning! This gorgeous antique matelassé cover is made of thick cotton and is fully washable, although I have found no stains, rips, holes or tears on the piece. This is shown on a twin and it's too large for it. So full/ queen size should work for this, harder to find them in that size. In overall good condition with minor issues. white on white bedspreads were inspired by the beautiful white needlework for which Marseilles and the surrounding region of Provence in southern France are known. The distinctive style involved creating intricate raised patterns by"stuffing" shapes stitched in between two pieces of cotton. Quilts made like this were expensive. Scarce, much-admired imports in the English-speaking world. In the mid-18th century British weavers set to work to reproduce the effect on a loom. Robert Elsden patented his solution in 1763. It is absolutely beautiful- hand made. Crocheted from different shades of lavender shading to white, It is quite heavy- made from cotton threads- it weighs almost 4 1/2 lbs. The bedspread doesn't appear to have ever been used. There are no discolorations, bad smells or worn spots. It is really near mint. It dates to the 1920's or 1930's, and measures 118" x 96" It could be displayed on a twin or double bed, or hung on the wall. It would be a marvelous heirloom to use and pass along. I believe it is 19th century. The outer linen panels depict different dragons. Eagles and fantastical beasts with a large heralic central panel that depicts a man or maybe the god Thor holding a Rune. I think it is a double bedspread. But please check the measurements with your bed as bed sizes have changed a little over time. It is in very good condition. There is a break in the lace where two narrow pieces are joined to make the pattern, these need a few stitches relaces. Also there is a pale pink mark on the top left corner, see last photo.
