I am selling an original Italian Renaissance hand carved fireplace surround. ... moreThe fireplace was imported from Italy by George D. Hale who built his mansion shortly after the Civil War. Hale was a professor. Scholar, and founder of the Hale Classical and Scientific School. Professor Hale was a graduate of the University of Rochester and a leader in civic and religious activities in Rochester, NY. He served as President of the Board of First Baptist Church for many years, was an active Republican and know widely throughout the area for his extensive library. He died in February, 1925 at the age of 81. The top portion of the fireplace is about 72 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The top right corner of the fireplace has a missing piece that measures 4 inches wide by 1 inch deep. The top panel with all of the hand carved figures is about 18 inches tall. 60 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. The columns are each 42 inches tall. 6 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. The overall dimensions of the fireplace surround are about 72 inches tall. 72 inches wide(top portion) and 20 to 24 inches deep. We believe it is from the 1880's-1920's. Look and the wonderful front with center medallion. It has an arched opening with an insert. There is a domed cutout for a heater vent(cast iron grate) and a fancy cast iron front. The top mantle shelf is serpentine. Use this piece on a wall for accent. Over an existing fireplace, or in your bathroom as a surround for a pedestal sink(my wife does that with one at home) The design possibilities are endless. The front face measures 44 1/2" tall. 44 7/8" wide, and 5 3/8" deep. The shelf is 1 1/4" thick, 49 1/4" wide and 10 7/8" deep. The opening is 33 3/8" high and 24" wide. It is sturdy and in good condition. It has minor wear and shows the adhesive marks and residue on the pieces. The top splash was broken many years ago and then repaired. The motif is of scrollwork and a single flower! Function/Use: Used for support the top shelf of a mantle. Savaged from European chateau in Prague. Lot consists of two(2) corbels; they are the same motif. But oweing to their hand-carved production there is some variation in the shappe. One of the flowers is more open than the other. Structure/Composition: Made of hand carved hardwood with dark brown stain. Unstained side shows little grain ands is light honey colored. So it could be poplar or oak. Wear-and-Tear: In excellent condition. Edges to the leaves are still crisp and unworn. Removal from wall was done well; however one corbel is missing a chip on the backside and the other has a small crack on the side from their removal from the wall.
