A massive and fine pair of ANTIQUE brass fireplace andirons. Blacksmith-forged wood supports are original. The log stops. Feet, and secondary supports are all brass, just discolored from use. The only parts that are not brass are the horizontal log supports. This is an early pair. I have added a photo of the underside so that you can see that the tops are connected by a rod through the log stop and base. You will note that the rod bottom is peened or flattened with a hammer. This is a true indicator of age. Later 19th century andirons will have a rod that extends through the base with threads on the end. Secured by a nut. An exceptional pair. Unmarked, as best I can tell, and certainly worthy of further research. This pair is massive. And extremely heavy. Each stands 16 3/4" tall and 21" deep. The feet are 10 1/2" wide. Sold just as-found. Uncleaned and unpolished, with original warm patina. The smooth surface is as good as I have seen. This set displays beautifully. With expected wear, surface scratches, and minor dings, but no repairs. One has a short split on the BACKSIDE, as seen in bottom photo, but this is not visible from the front. The other andiron is missing it's secondary brass foot. I am not an expert on antique brass, so please view photos for exact condition. These are easily disassembled. Nice Pr. Vintage Or Antique Heavy Cannon Ball Type Andirons; Each 11 Lb.
This is a nice pair of vintage or antique cannon ball style andirons. The andirons each are 21" in total length and 18 1/4" in height. The top ball on these is 3" in diameter. I'm not really good at telling iron from steel but the upright fronts showing the nice hammered effect or workmanship look more like steel to me. The long horizontal extensions for holding logs appear to be iron. The andirons have some surface rust on them as you can see in the photos. Generally I take surface rust off iron or steel with kerosene or oil on a rag but didn't do this so they can be used right away in a fireplace without any fumes. The underside of the extensions had some letters and numbers incised on each one. One extension on the underside is marked AR 2 and the other one AL 2. Also both andirons have a'WC' marking on the ... moreinside of each leg. Perhaps this is a maker's identifying mark. Have tried to photograph these for the viewer. The last photo shows some black finish on the ball of one andiron. These pieces may well have been allover black at one time or at least the fancy fronts. I have looked both andirons over carefully and find no cracks. Chips, bruises, scrapes, or repairs from them being carelessly moved about over the years. Also, other than some surface rust or stain there were no places found where the metal has flaked or deteriorated. The metal is quite solid. Some discoloration and roughness can be seen where the extensions held the logs in the fire for many years. Still this area is solid and does not show surface metal breakup. See the last few photos. One can see two original long vertical casting lines on each side of both fancy upright front pieces. There is some crude casting as one vertical line may be not quite flush against the line coming down from the other side on these front pieces. There is also a little other rough casting that is typical of work done years ago. On the flat extension pieces one can see a few inches of very fine parallel surface lines done in the

Here is a nice pair of cast iron cannon ball andirons. This set is in good condition with an authentic hammered finish. It has some surface rust that can be wire brushed off and oiled for an authentic patina finish. The cannon ball tops are cast whole. Vintage Cannon Ball Fireplace Andirons Metal Cast Iron Marked These fireplace Andirons are 18" tall measured in the front. And 18 3/4" long measured from front to back. The metal is magnetic, yet it has a brass color to it. The back part is a cast that has a lot of rusting and wear as seen in photo. The front andirons are a cannon ball style and they are numbered 3685 on the bottom. There is a very old partial part of a sticker that is left on one, I was scraping some off with my finger nail, but I'll leave to buyer as to not do any damage to the item. There is also a lot of wear to them, scratches and marks and wear in the brass color all due to age. Will combine shipping charges for multiple auctions won.
