Plain handle iron: base 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" and 4" from base to top of handle Twist handle iron: base 5 1/4" x 3 3/4" and 4" from base to top of handle Each weighs 4 pounds(the plain handle is about 4# 2 ounces) The plain handle iron has a raised"5" and the twist handle has a number that looks like either a 5 or a 6 FYI: Flat irons were also called SAD IRONS or smoothing irons. Sad" is an old word for solid/dense/heavy. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Unfortunately. The metal handles also got hot when the iron was heated, and they had to be gripped with a thick cloth. Some irons had wooden handles that did not get ... morehot. You'd need at least two irons on the go together for an effective system: one in use. And one re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. This auction is for a set of andirons. It is a Butler and Maid set. I discovered them at an estate sale here in Alabama. They are made of heavy cast iron and are solid. They measure 16& 1/2 inches tall and 17 inches long. From the front to the end of the log bar. They weigh 40 to 45 lbs. I believe they were made in Georgia post civil war era. Late 1800's. The y are in very good condition. They do not come apart. They did come apart when made but have sort of solidified together over 150 years. They possibly could come apart but I wont attempt it because I am afraid of damaging them. These rare andirons list for up to 2.000 dollars. NO RESERVE!
