It can also work beautifully as a wall mounted bed headboard. Especially trimmed out with curtains, etc. There are many other possible uses as a shelf, crown, pediment or window box valence. This piece is in excellent antique condition with no damage of any significance. We have several other cabinet tops similar to this in different sizes and styles. Description This is a great piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian home. It is made of oak with a light coat of reddish brown paint. The upper shelf is trimmed in beaded molding. It is supported by tall round columns with ornate capitals. The lower shelf is curved with carvings on the face supported by a center bracket. The firebox and beveled mirror are framed in egg and dart molding. It measures 60.5 inches wide by 86 inches tall and is 12.5 inches deep. The firebox opening is 41.5 wide by 39 tall. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning. The upper shelf has chips at the corners. Restored, antique fireplace mantels salvaged from an old plantation home in Central Georgia. Each mantel is made entirely of red oak(no veneer) and dates back to the 1880's. The lower half of each mantel has a fairly straightforward design with a few accents including a turned. Tapered column on each leg; a carved starburst motif above each column; and chamfered edges on both sides of each leg. The upper half of each ... moremantel has 4 shelves(2 long and 2 short) a recessed panel in the center contoured with egg and dart molding and an oval opening for a mirror; 2 turned. Tapered columns with a carved plinth block in the middle; and a lovely crown with curved ends. Glass: One of the mirrors was missing. And the other had very little silvering left. They will need new mirrors(flat or beveled) which we could order and install for you. If you would like a bigger mirror, we could remove the whole panel(the area in between the ornate molding) and install a rectangular mirror. The mantel was covered under many layers of paint, and some parts were broken or missing(mostly decorative appliqués) We acquired the mantels in pieces. This facilitated the stripping process. Description This is a nice piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It is veneered in 1/4 sawn oak and is unpainted. The upper shelf is supported by sound columns with ornate composition capitals. It has it's original beveled mirror framed in egg and dart molding. The lower shelf is supported by 2 corbels with ornate composition faces. The opening is filled with a slate panel that is scored and faux painted to look like tile with an arch topped register at the bottom. It measures 54.5 inches wide by 80 inches tall and is 12.25 inches deep. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning. One corbel has a small chip. There is some loss to the decoration and a couple of small chips to the veneer with some loss. The legs and breast are loaded with spoon carvings. It measures 53 inches wide by 47 inches tall and is 10 inches deep at the shelf. The opening is 29 wide by 35 inches tall. Penn Antique Restoration. 63"x50" Antique Red Oak Victorian Fireplace Mantel Exquisite. Antique, solid, red oak fireplace mantel salvaged from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mantel has an exquisite Victorian style design. Each leg has a round. Tapered, half-fluted column with round base and ornate capital. Notice the carved acanthus leaves on the capitals, and their reeded sides-what great accents! The body has lovely acanthus and volute motif in the center sitting atop a stepped ledge with dental molding. The crown molding, directly below the shelf also has steps and dental detail. Restoration: At the point of salvage. The mantel was covered under several layers of paint, and a thick layer of stain and varnish. The body is made up of 2 boards, and the 2 boards separated from each other at some point(see photos under"Prior ... moreto restoration" In order to thoroughly remove the paint. Stain and finish, we had to take apart the whole mantel. We hand-scraped and sanded each piece, and then put them back together with new nails, drywall screws, and boards on the back acting as stiffeners. Now, the mantel is stronger and sturdier than ever! We rejoined the 2 boards of the body. And most of the applied carvings are intact. However, there are some pieces missing including a volute. If you would like us to hand-carve and apply the missing pieces, email us for a quote. Condition: The mantel is in great structural condition. There are some cosmetic blemishes. Victorian Stick & Ball Mahogany Fireplace Mantel w/Shelves & Mirrors 82"H x 60"W
We are pleased to offer to the market this beautiful antique fireplace mantle. This piece has great character and dates to the Victorian era. This piece measures 82" High x 60 3/16" at the widest point and it has a depth of 10.5" The mantle back has the main center mirror flanked by two smaller mirrors with shelves on the sides. The front of the mirror has turned& reeded columns holding a shelf above it. There are attached cornice pieces above the two smaller mirrored sections that are topped with a stick& ball design. This same design is also found on the crest at the top center of the mantle. There are hand carved medallions and curliques on this piece as well. This is a gorgeous mantle that will definately make a statement in a room. There are age and use appropriate scratches. Dings, divets, cracks, repairs, and ... moreother marks on this piece. There are issues with the finish as well from being stored. Structurally the piece is solid and sound with no rot or losseness. It does appear that someone at some point had done some gluing on this. Each and every piece of wood is at least 100 years old. Most of the barns and houses were ... morebuilt from 1860- 1920's. The oldest pieces are typically what is called"hand hewn" This is where they used ax to cut the bark off the timbers and square up the logs. The other type are"saw cut" These pieces were either out of a newer building(1920's) or the owner was rich and had access to a saw mill. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170º at the core temperture for 12 hours. We finish with three coats of sprayed commercial grade flat finish polyurethane.
