Hale was a professor. Scholar, and founder of the Hale Classical and Scientific School. Professor Hale was a graduate of the University of Rochester and a leader in civic and religious activities in Rochester, NY. He served as President of the Board of First Baptist Church for many years, was an active Republican and know widely throughout the area for his extensive library. He died in February, 1925 at the age of 81. The top portion of the fireplace is about 72 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The top right corner of the fireplace has a missing piece that measures 4 inches wide by 1 inch deep. The top panel with all of the hand carved figures is about 18 inches tall. 60 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. The columns are each 42 inches tall. 6 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. Up for sale is an original antique carved white marble fireplace mantel. This piece is absolutely stunning! Excellent shape. No chips, cracks, or major staining. Stands approximately 43" tall, and 40" wide, with the top shelf being wider(approx 50" I am selling this in hopes it will be installed in a historic home or be appreciated like it should. I bought this medallion from the owner of a historic building in downtown Toledo. Ohio. He is selling the building and thinks the new owners will either tear it down or gut and renovate it. John Bryan Fineart One Of A Kind Hand-carved White Pine Fireplace Mantel
This mantelpiece was created in 1990 from old growth White pine and features hand-carved Atlantic salmon swirling over a colorful redd. Trout lilies and classic featherwing salmon flies. The carvings are hand painted with Grumbacher's artist oil paints. The mantel was originally painted white and used in art shows and exhibitions. The trends at the time were considerably focused on natural woods(cherry and walnut primarily) and for that reason it never found a home, but spawned a number of commissioned pieces in natural woods. It is one of a pair of fly-fishing mantels Bryan created on speculation to use as examples at art shows to demonstrate the possibilities for commissioned pieces. The mantel has been exhibited periodically for various events. But has spent most of the past 25 years stored in a crate in the artist's studio. Bryan ... morestripped the white paint off the mantel recently to create the effect of an old mantel, once painted and now stripped down to the beautiful pumpkin pine. The painted centerpiece, trout lilies and salmon flies were left painted. The result is a wonderfully folky mantelpiece with classic proportions looking for a home after all these years. It has never been installed in a home and thus is offered as'new' It represents a'break out' moment for the artist as one of his unique blends of sporting art and classic architecture.
