This is an antique cast iron match holder or match safe. On the front cover it reads: SELF CLOSING. FOR MATCHES& C. PATENTED. DEC.20.1864. D.M& CO. NEW HAVEN. This item has two mounting holes on the back that allow it to be mounted to a wall. On the bottom side it is a rough surface, which my guess is used to strike matches. This piece is in good condition with a naturally aging patina and shows wear in some spots. I am not sure if it has been repainted or not. A small stud on the top of lid prevents the lid from being opened up high enough so that it can rest in the upright position. This piece measures about 3.75" wide by 2.5" on top, 2" tall to top of wall mount bracket. The bottom strike square measures 2.75" x 2" It does not come with screws.

You can see from the picture that this mantle is not installed. My contractor called me from a sale. Told me about the mantle, sent a picture, said it would fit and asked me whether I wanted to buy it for my living room. I agreed and was prepared to do the work to restore it. It turns out that it didn't fit once I got it home. AHHHHH! I would really like to re-coup my investment so please buy it if you can use it or want to fix it up and re-sell it. The mantle is a soft white with gray veins. The surround has less color. The screen is a brass color. I don't know whether it is solid brass but judging from it's age my guess is that it is. Vintage Cast Iron Fireplace Tool Set-Handmade from Antique Stove Parts-Metal Art
If you like unique and different items. Here's the fireplace tool set for you. I can't say for sure that every piece on this stand is from a stove but I do see many pieces that I know are from an old stove. That gear you see is part of the grate shakes from a stove. Regardless of where all the parts are from, it's a very unique conversation piece, that's for sure. The 2 rings on the bottom may have been welded to the piece at one time, I don't know but the way you se them, they are just thru a hole and are loose from the stand. The tongs are spring loaded and they do work fine. Not much else I can say about this piece that the pics don't say. You either like it at first glance or you don't. This is an old/antique fireplace cover or cover for summer. It's made of some type of metal. I was able to get a magnet to stick to it. It feels too light to be cast iron. I thought it might be a tin material. But if it was, the magnet wouldn't stick. Even though there's surface rust type color places, I think it would clean up nicely. It's with a place for a pipe that slides over if needed. It has the surface rust type places but seems to be solid as far as I can tell and just needs some cleaning and maybe someone might want to paint it? I am not sure if it was originally made, but each side at the top and bottom have small hole places for small screws maybe? or maybe made for attaching or securing to the fireplace? It has the raised, embossed ornate designs. I am listing it as local pickup only because I have no idea how to ship something this large. This is a wood and metal freestanding faux fireplace/mantle with metal liner. Manufactured by Wood-Craft Inc. Baltimore MD. Sticker indicates company was founded in 1933. I have no idea how old this unit is. I tried to research the company and/or the unit and can't find information anywhere on ebay or on Google. I would estimate it at over 50 years old based on the fact that there is no plastic anywhere on the unit. I bought it at an antique store to have a place to hang Christmas stockings: I put an little electric fireplace and used it for five years, but the ... morefireplace stopped working so I pitched that, and now I'm moving and hope to have a real fireplace. Measures 52" wide. 44" tall, and only 10" deep. Someone- not me- made small cut outs(pictured) to accommodate up to a six inch molding and allow it to be placed flat against the wall. Very stable, but if you have children or dogs that might bump it I would suggest securing it to the wall. The textured faux brick is made of metal. Not plastic, and the interior metal is certainly not perfect, but could easily be re-painted. The back of the metal has some light surface rusting. There are a few scuff marks here and there, and the solid wood top has some slight hairline cracks. I tried to show all of the imperfections in the pictures. 2 Antique Metal Hand Painted Fireplace Wall Soot Plates
I have for sale 2 rare. Authentic metal, brass possibly? antique fireplace wall plates. We had these type of plates in our house back in the early 60's hanging on our wall to keep soot from coming in our house from the coal furnace. They are beautifully hand painted, they are 9 1/2" all the way around, shows expected signs of wear and around the edges, bends, dents, but can be worked out by a metal worker. Patina can be seen on the front and back, can be cleaned, but if I were you I would leave it like it is. One of the hooks were replace decades ago, over all condition nice, art work still looks good.
