This is a stunning pair of mid 19th century brass and iron fireplace andirons. they are very ornate with intricate detailing and have a wonderful patina from age. they are nicely footed with dimensional claw feet and nicely curved legs. the shaft and ball top finial are deeply ribbed with a detailed filler piece in-between. the finial is very large and also topped with a solid brass finial. the back wood rest are large and made from cast iron. One has a very old repair that gives nice character. they each measure 22 inches tall by 8 inches wide by 22 1/4 inches back to front. they are nice old andirons. There are some dings to the ball tops. Possibly European, or if American made at least in the European style& tradition. Dating to the 1870's-90's, in gothic or midevial or renaissance revival style. Part of the aesthetic movement. Made of stamped brass sheeting nailed over molid wood, with a slanted top featuring relief panels depicting scenes of midevial or renaissance characters. Each side is different and individually hand crafted. Reproductions would have the same scene repeating. Each side of the box tells a different part of a story. Came from an old New York City hotel. 20 1/2" tall at highest point 22 1/2" long 15 3/4" wide Top has group of people in woods by pond. Fantastic Victorian Fireplace Bellows in Good Condition. England. 19th Century This antique piece is a bellows used to fan the fireplace’s flames. It comes from England and is a very old article. As it was made in the Victorian era(19th century) The bellows is made of solid wood and golden brass, having survived to our days in excellent condition. The mechanism still works though the wheel is slightly worn and can scarcely operate the inner fan. This is why this article is basically a collector’s piece, perfect as a decorative element that will stand out because of its beauty and originality. The bellows’ operation is simple and also ingenious. Differently from the typical accordion models. This singular device has a fan inside that moves when the outside crank is turned. This crank is attached to a wooden disk that operates the mentioned ... morefan. The vanes generate airflow and send it to the brass end. The sides of the bellows are made of solid mahogany wood, with a deep reddish tone and greatly preserved. Offered for sale is this ornate wooden mantelpiece c.1890. The intricate carving and turning will make this an impressive addition to your building project or restoration! Note the beveled mirror in the overmantel. The condition of the wood in this mantel is excellent– the finish will need some refurbishment as there are what look like runs in the varnish and paint drips on the top shelf(only) and the person who painted the last room that it was in wasn’t too careful about cutting in around it. The patina is beautiful. But if you like a shabby chic look, or would enjoy spending a little time working on the finish, the dings on this 125 year old mantle are absolutely minimal. I have tried with the pictures that are included to show whatever imperfections there are, but overall the condition, design, proportions and quality of the craftsmanship ... moreof this piece are outstanding!
