The fireplace was imported from Italy by George D. Hale who built his mansion shortly after the Civil War. Hale was a professor. Scholar, and founder of the Hale Classical and Scientific School. Professor Hale was a graduate of the University of Rochester and a leader in civic and religious activities in Rochester, NY. He served as President of the Board of First Baptist Church for many years, was an active Republican and know widely throughout the area for his extensive library. He died in February, 1925 at the age of 81. The top portion of the fireplace is about 72 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The top right corner of the fireplace has a missing piece that measures 4 inches wide by ... more1 inch deep. The top panel with all of the hand carved figures is about 18 inches tall. 60 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. The columns are each 42 inches tall. 6 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. The overall dimensions of the fireplace surround are about 72 inches tall. 72 inches wide(top portion) and 20 to 24 inches deep. The winning bidder must make arrangements to dismantle and ship the fireplace surround at your own expense. THE WINNING BIDDER MUST SEND PAYMENT WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE END OF THE AUCTION. I personally like the natural original patina.they are dusty,dirty,crusty and rusty but very solid and very heavy-duty and are ready for FIRE DOG duty as is. they both measure 17" tall x 24" long x 10" wide and weigh 12 pounds each. the balls( which i believe to be civil war cannon balls) are 3 1/2" in diameter. these are a great period set of andirons that would look great in your home or museum. pre civil war fireplace 1851 VICTORIAN Era MM Co. Cast Iron TOMBSTONE 3 piece
MM.CO 1 PATENTED APPLIED FOR 1851. THIS A RARE 3 PIECE FIREPLACE SET FOUND IN AN OLD NEW ENGLAND BARN HAY LOFT. THE PAINTED GLASS WAS SUPPOSED TO EMULATE THOMASTON MAINE MARBLE WHEN THE GRANITE WAS GETTING SCARCE. UNFORTUNATELY THE BACK WAS PLASTERED IN THE OLD DAYS TO PROTECT THE FIRE PLACE GLASS FROM HEAT AND IS STILL ON THE PIECE. BUT FORTUNATELY WHERE THE PLASTER IS STILL ON THE BACK IT PROTECTED MOST OF THE PANES OF PAINTED GLASS. THERE ARE A FEW WITH NO PLASTER AND THE PAINT IS DAMAGED. THE MEASUREMENTS ARE A 64 X 47 X 81/2

I am not particularly good when it comes to identifying metals. I think they are either brass or bronze and cast iron but not sure. I do know they are large and heavy. As shown in photos. CIVIL WAR ERA WOOD STOVE, DETROIT WORKS#20 1865 ,VERY RARE FIND
Beautiful cast iron wood stove from Detroit Stove Works circa1860.Highly detailed stove, the stove is in excellent condition and could be used. The rear legs have been repaired. But they could be easily replaced. The repairs are not noticeable from looking at the stove, yet they are there. This stove has been in my family for decades and is from a cabin in Wisconsin. If your looking for a special piece that's highly decorated you'll love this one. Own a piece of real American history.

I started to replace the mirrors but thought it was best to leave it original. It measures 64in long x 32in high x 9in deep.
