T hey date from the mid period of the 18th century and are of European origin. Date about c1750. Greek helmet or possibly Conquistador. Were part of a London house clearance and were displayed either side of the mantlepiece in the drawing room. Certainly a quite superb pair of oak male carved figures in the seated postures. Were mounted onto either end of the mantlepiece so the carved arm and hand are on the outside. Therefore the purposely saw ed off arm rests against the wall above the mantle. Integrating into the mantle wood. Superbly relief carved naked figures portrayed wearing ... morehelmets with the intricate carved hand resting on the knee. A left and a right. Carved in relief. Circa 1860s-1870s Hardwood Lions' Heads/Architectural Salvage/RARE These beautifully carved pieces. Circa 1860s-1870s, have handcarved lion heads that morph into graceful leaf forms. Original square nails are present. They were originally part of woodwork(possibly the fire surround) in a mansion made by German artisans. One piece is 7 3/4" long; 2" wide and 2" deep at the nose of the lion. The second lion head was broken off below the neck, at 4 3/4" long(same width and depth) The depth and detail of the carving creates beautiful shadows and would look gorgeous in the right frame or against the right background. Function/Use: Used for support the top shelf of a mantle. Savaged from European chateau in Prague. Lot consists of two(2) corbels. Structure/Composition: Made of hand carved hardwood with dark brown stain. Unstained side shows little grain ands is light honey colored. So it could be poplar or oak. Wear-and-Tear: In excellent condition; varnish is chipped in places. But no damage to the wood. Edges to the leaves are still crisp and unworn. Removal from wall was done well, no chips missing from the corbels; no pry marks or damage from the removal. The wood backing strip that the corbel is glue to is split, but the corbel itself is not.
