This is a solid Black Cherry mantel. It also makes a really nice display shelf. It has an oil finish topped with a light coat of polyurethane that really makes the grain and color variations come alive. The color is all natural and no stain has been applied. Some of the original saw marks remain. This is a hand crafted piece finished with hand scraping and shaving. Overall width is 62" and it is 14" high including the lower brackets.The shelf is 6" deep. Each and every piece of wood is at least 100 years old. Most of the barns and houses were ... morebuilt from 1860- 1920's. The oldest pieces are typically what is called"hand hewn" This is where they used ax to cut the bark off the timbers and square up the logs. The other type are"saw cut" These pieces were either out of a newer building(1920's) or the owner was rich and had access to a saw mill. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170º at the core temperture for 12 hours. We finish with three coats of sprayed commercial grade flat finish polyurethane. ANTIQUE CARVED INLAY WOOD FRENCH GOTHIC DEVIL FACE FIREPLACE MANTEL SHELF CORBEL
We are pleased to offer this beautiful. Antique, salvaged piece. This was once a piece of a large cabinet, but could easily be used in a variety of areas. It would make a fantastic fireplace mantel, window valance, pediment, etc. This is solid walnut wood with inlay veneer and exceptional, carved accents. There are 2 large corbels with deeply curved and carved side profiles. Each has a carved North Wind or Devil face with fantastic detailing such as acanthus leaves that surround the faces. The end sections of the unit feature squared columns with incised diamond pattern. Very nice carved acanthus scrolls support each column and provide nice end accents. The inlay wood sections are raised panels. The lower section retains the finish base cap molding trim which is substantial in size. The back of the unit is in original condition with the original ... morenails/screws in place. The top has 3 peg holes where a shelf had once been attached. The unit is in very good, antique condition. There are a few, very minor scuffs which are not distracting and can be resolved. There is one split down the side that will need to be filled but it has not affected the structural integrity of the unit(see picture 5) This is simply exceptional and beautiful! The unit measures 51" long. 10.5" tall and extends 9.5" from the wall at the corbel section. The corbels are 10.5" tall. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ OUR SHIPPING SECTION PRIOR TO PURCHASE We are pleased to offer this. Beautiful, antique fireplace mantel/shelf. The mantel is old(early 1900s) and came from a home in the St. Louis area. It is constructed of quarter sawn oak with an extremely nice grain pattern. It features a long and deep, contoured/curved shelf with full, round columns(not halved and attached to the surround) for support. The columns are fairly substantial in diameter and are also quarter sawn. They retain their original bases which are identical to their capitals. The surround extends above the shelf and is fixed so that the center point of the grain pattern aligns with the center of the shelf. The grain on the top of the surround changes directions at the mid point so that the grain pattern on the surround faces inward toward the center. The piece ... moreis untouched so that it retains the original flat nails/screws as well as the old, large dowels which attach the shelf to the surround. The top of the shelf is not as ornately patterned as the balance of the piece and has some stain runs/drips on it. It probably, originally housed a piece of marble. The shelf is deepest at its center section and is rounded on the sides above the columns. It is a thick piece and measures 4" in thickness. The opening, which once surrounded a mirror, is beveled and not simply flat. This is an incredible mantel shelf. It is in very good condition with very little evidence of age or use. There are very few nicks or scratches and the finish is very good. It measures 60" long. 31.75" tall and it extends 12" from the wall at its deepest point. The columns are 21" tall. They are 5.5" in diameter at their bases and capitals and are 4" in diameter otherwise. The shelf section is 57.5" long. It is 8.75" deep at the ends and contours to a depth of 11" at the center. Fabulous Arts & Crafts Antique Tiger 1/4 Oak 41" Shelf or Mantel
This listing is for an absolutely GORGEOUS long antique shelf. Oak is ALL tiger quartersawn wood. The entire shelf is oak and it's in wonderful condition with no damage. It came right off my own wall. It has sawtooth molding along front with no breakage or damage. It has two graceful brackets. Top is lovely and has a small oak edge strip to keep things from falling off. Measures 41" long and shelf top is 7" deep. Height is about 9" It would be ideal as a fireplace mantel because of the substantial length. Though I've used it to hold pottery and more substantial items. Grain is beautiful. I have always hung from two picture hangers wall. Has brackets on back for hanging which are new and strong. It's large but not so heavy that it is hard to manage. It's from France and it dates to the late 1800's. It is made of solid walnut and oak finished to a nice warm color. This piece would work very well as a fireplace mantel-just trim out the bottom.
