The fireplace was imported from Italy by George D. Hale who built his mansion shortly after the Civil War. Hale was a professor. Scholar, and founder of the Hale Classical and Scientific School. Professor Hale was a graduate of the University of Rochester and a leader in civic and religious activities in Rochester, NY. He served as President of the Board of First Baptist Church for many years, was an active Republican and know widely throughout the area for his extensive library. He died in February, 1925 at the age of 81. The top portion of the fireplace is about 72 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The top right corner of the fireplace has a missing piece that measures 4 inches wide by ... more1 inch deep. We found this is the barn a few days ago. It has been under some old column posts. I think this is a Marble support for a fireplace mantle. But I am not sure. the other possibility is it could be a fancy ornament that capped a column? I am not sure. I do believe the piece is handcarved marble. The scroll work is wonderful. Sadly I only have ONE. Also the back is signed with the Initials P.R. not to sure about that either. Just guessing it could be the person who hand carved the marble. I would say this piece is from the 1800's. The piece has a chip around the hole at the top which would be concealed when placed. Also there is some light chipping to a little bit of the scroll work. not much though. The piece weighs about 12 or 13 pounds. I would use a medium flat rate box to ship.
