And features elaborate foliate carved designs and marble top. Its condition is very good, with wear and prior restorations consistent with age and use. Marble top may be later, and has abrasions, some small losses and restorations. The stretcher has some losses, cracks and restored cracks and breaks as evidenced by visible glue residue on underside. You can raise one or both leaves at a time. Tables like this were used to make daily dough on busy kitchens. But today it can serve the purpose of a kitchen table in a small cottage or even a dining table if you have no dining room– when leaves are open you can serve up to 8-10 people and when leaves ... moreare down it takes up minimal floor space. This table was carefully restored, when we did our best trying to preserve it’s original patina and time marks on the top are clearly seen. Because it is solid wood it was much easier to remove them and make this table like new. But we are museum quality restorers, not refinishers. Table is jointed with wooden pegs; uneven. Hand cut dovetails on the drawer and the way how it was constructed, along with early, rusted through nails makes us believe that it is a very old item, dating back to early 19th- late 18th century, but due to the provincial nature of this piece of furniture it just cannot be identified for sure and an exact date of its creation is unknown. It is a quality made item, well build and precisely fit, only three solid pieces of lumber were able to make it 42“ wide, which means that it’s wood came from about 300 years old tree; you will not able to find lumber this wide in stores anymore– all old trees are under protection of the French government now, hence they were almost all gone in 18-19 centuries, when France was producing only solid wood furniture. A French Neoclassical Antique Side Table crafted of solid walnut during the last quarter of the 18th Century in France. Known as a vide poche. Literally translating"empty pocket" this form is often stationed by the door, designed with a small stretcher tray for holding the keys, wallet and other pocket contents. The top has a satinwood inlaid diamond highlighting it's otherwise plain rectangular form, a small drawer with a chased-brass knob sliding out to reveal two square compartments on either corner. The left has an original tiny hand forged hinge that allows it to lift to reveal a space inside. The right compartment is hollowed ... moreand empty, possibly either to contain a candle or an inkwell(though no ink residue is visible inside the drawer) Crafted of solid oak secondary woods, the drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, nailed from the bottom into rabbets on the sides. The table is raised on pierced lier supports. These tenoned into oak rails beneath the table with two original and two replaced steel screws securing it from beneath. The strings are formed with brass tubes that tenon through the top and into the base. It has a scooped tray stretcher at the base and rests over bowed legs. The interior is stamped by it's maker. A natural rustic, sun-bleached look, though solid and in good condition, with all spokes present and joints firm. Adapted with four well matched oak legs and a modern glass with bevelled edge. Good condition: Holds shape well with no warping. Table stands firm with no wobble. Natural surface wear is apparent and gives a rustic look, but there are no eye-catching marks. Antique Solid Oak Coffee Table - French Oak Farmhouse Table Pre-1800
I am moving back to Europe and unfortunately cannot take this great coffee table back with me. This is a very unique and special piece and I plan on trying to replicate this table when I get back to Europe. This is a serious talking point piece- here is the story: The first thing to know is that they did not have coffee tables in the olden days- the coffee table is a modern day invention- rich folk had servants and they served the coffee and tea. So there was no use for a coffee table. So how can we claim this is a Pre-1800 coffee table? Well. The secret is in the title and the pictures. This is actually a French Oak Farmhouse table. I had a professional carpenter reduce the length of the table legs to turn it into a coffee table. I kept the original bottoms of the legs that were cut off. And one of them is pictured, and you will get all ... morefour cut off legs with the table as I kept them. For the record, it truly upset the carpenter to chop the legs down- as you will see, the wood is actually petrified. But I was having real problems finding a great antique coffee table. So I came up with this idea- and it worked out amazing! I purchased this item in London at auction in February. 2001 for 600 pounds sterling and I had it shipped to the US with a lot of other furniture that I purchased. The auctioneers estimate was actually 600- 800 pounds, so I got a great deal on it. Including the auction commission/ freight. In current dollars, my cost was approx. $1,200 for this item. For comparison. Reproduction coffee tables not nearly as solid or as nice as this, and not even made out of oak, cost in excess of $3,000- just take a look! The auctioneer was the esteemed Christies. But I lost the catalog(if you take a look at my other listings, you will see that I have included pictures from the original auction catalogs, but I lost this one) As I am leaving. Antique 18th or 19th century French Italian Provincial side table
Charming 18th or possibly 19th century French Provincial side table. It is 30 X 20" and 20" tall. It's solid and sturdy. But there is no bottom inside the cabinet. Shows lots of wear and great natural patina. With a little oil or polish, it would look great. I don't see any nails, just wooden pegs. No reserve.
