Made with a variety of slats, with a shape between rectangular and trapezoidal, with the frontal part somewhat narrower and curved upward(like a) and whose bottom is covered with or-like metal blades. One form. Once common in the area. Was"about three to four feet wide and six feet deep(these dimensions often vary, however) consisting of two or three wooden planks assembled to one another, of more than four inches wide, in which several hard and cutting flints crammed into the bottom part pull along over the grains. I am moving back to Europe and unfortunately cannot take this great coffee table back with me. This is a very unique and special piece and I plan on trying to replicate this table when I get back to Europe. This is a serious talking point piece- here is the story: The first thing to know is that they did not have coffee tables in the olden days- the coffee table is a modern day invention- rich folk had servants and they served the coffee and tea. So there was no use for a coffee table. So how can we claim this is a Pre-1800 coffee table? Well. The secret is in the title and the pictures. This is actually a French Oak Farmhouse table. I had a professional carpenter reduce the length of the table legs to turn it into a coffee table. I kept the original bottoms of the legs that were cut off. And one of them is pictured, and you will get all ... morefour cut off legs with the table as I kept them. For the record, it truly upset the carpenter to chop the legs down- as you will see, the wood is actually petrified. But I was having real problems finding a great antique coffee table. So I came up with this idea- and it worked out amazing! I purchased this item in London at auction in February. 2001 for 600 pounds sterling and I had it shipped to the US with a lot of other furniture that I purchased. The auctioneers estimate was actually 600- 800 pounds, so I got a great deal on it. Including the auction commission/ freight. In current dollars, my cost was approx. $1,200 for this item. For comparison. Reproduction coffee tables not nearly as solid or as nice as this, and not even made out of oak, cost in excess of $3,000- just take a look! The auctioneer was the esteemed Christies. But I lost the catalog(if you take a look at my other listings, you will see that I have included pictures from the original auction catalogs, but I lost this one) As I am leaving. Oak and pine chest, formerly one part of a period chest on stand, having an unusual arrangement of one long and four short drawers, with four original escutcheons and three pearl drop handles, the other handles nineteenth century replacements, the carcass showing the original dark stained finish now distressed commensurate with age, now acting as a coffee table or television stand. The chest shows masses of character with some rather attractive wear and tear with scuffing commensurate with its ... moreage. The drawers run smooth with the carcass structurally sound and it has had small concealed contemporary bun feet added to each corner so that it is slightly elevated from the ground. There are four of the original period escutcheons present and three of the original pearl drop handles which date the piece nicely. There is some old worm and we have treated the item as a precaution whilst there is no key for the locks that are present. The overall patination especially to the top is very well established. An unusual piece of estate made furniture that has considerable age. A chequered past, and masses of charm and with period coffee tables being hard to locate it proves a refreshing alternative to more contemporary alternatives. Beautiful one of a kind table. It actually looks better than the pictures represent. It is comprised of wood, iron, even brass. Showing wonderful patina from age, but appears to have been stained at some point in time. The underside of the table shows its true age, being very crude& aged. This is a very old piece still very sturdy& intact, but not sure if made in the late 1800's or early 19th century. I can tell that this table has been well preserved, and shows repair nails in areas. Again this table is very sturdy& does not contain any damage to the wood. Two sides of the table show ornate iron& brass metal work. ... moreOne side contains a tip of wood missing at the bottom, but hardly noticeable. Measures about 47" x 45" not counting jolted metal capped wood ends) about 13" in height. Notice the jolted out corners of the table capped w/ metal. Their are also 4 square slotted holes cut into the metal on each corner. Two of the corners on the same side contain cut out square holes in the metal, but not in the wood. Spanish Campaign Table Desk from the 1600s Shortened to Coffee Table Height
This wonderful 17th century walnut table measures 46 1/4" in width. 21 1/2" in depth and 21" in height. It has a one board top. The legs fold in with a hand hammered pin system. I was told that this was probably a campaign desk or table and that it dates from the 1600's and that it is Spanish in origin. Over the course of many years, there have been many repairs. At one time, there was damage caused by worms which resulted in the legs being shortened. Some of the trim has been replaced. The old lock remains which dates the table to the 1600's. The lock has a sidewise V which is similar to a frizzen spring found in a flint lock pistol.
