18th Century William and Mary Period Gate Leg Oval Dining Breakfast Side Table

Each section of two solid golden oak boards covered with a wonderful wax finish, the leaves lifting to flush on ruled joints. The leaves have original 18th century hand forged hinges, though we suspect at least one of the leaves is replaced(see notes below in condition) The frame is pinned tenon-mortise construction over intensely ring-turned legs, each stretched permanently by a box-form stretcher, from which the gating leg on either side swings freely on a through-dowel peg. The legs swing very easily and smoothly to support the leaves, each with the correlating scrape marks underneath. In wonderful preserved condition and with outstanding form. ... moreThis is just the piece to match any Colonial inspired decor, while having an overall petite proportion that is very desirable in a table of this nature. This is a wonderful find for the collector(though consideration will have to be given to the leaves) and designer alike- in overall outstanding condition for a work crafted over 250 years ago, this will be cherished in your home functionally and decoratively. Finish is well preserved beneath a later wax finish- the finish beneath the wax is very early. Probably not original 2. Feet are possibly replaced- they are affixed to the legs. But have a very natural wear- however, the softwood(presumably pine) nature of the feet also suggests possible early replacement 3. Drop leaves are possibly replaced; at least one is certainly a replacement. Note the second cut for an earlier hinge and the slight mismatch between hinge size and cut slot. Description: This listing is for an 18th Century American Chippendale Carved Ball and Claw Foot Drop Leaf Table. Pennsylvania, almost certainly from Philadelphia, circa 1770-90. Each board on this stunning table is fully solid single planks of Mahogany, each carefully selected for the best possible grains. They are hand planed to leave a flawless top surface, with an unfinished and uneven planed underside. The leaves hang from the table with hand crafted original hinges, uncommon with the pressure usually on these hinges, but a statement to the quality of craftsmanship in the piece. One hinge is a possible replacement. Still a period hand forged hinge, but of different dimension from the other three) The hinges are reinforced ... moreto allow originality and functionality at the same time. The top sits gracefully over its original frame. The frame has a most graceful form. With a flowing carved apron floating the front and back. The practical hand craftsmanship is obvious, where the cabinetmaker carved and finished the front of each apron, but left the back unfinished with evidence of chisel and knife throughout. Each corner is formed with a pegged tenon-mortise joint, while the frame- of primarily pine secondary woods- joins with dovetailed construction for a permanent build. The underside of the table is locked on to the top with original glued blocks. The frame sits over four cabriole legs, rolling with ease into the tendons and muscles tensed in grip. It has some of the most beautiful Philadelphia ball and claw carvings, with full details of the talons, stretched skin and sharpness of the grasping nails reaching around each perfectly formed ball. Small knicks and marks from the knife are still apparent where they carefully carved each foot. The piece boasts the most magnificent patina and depth of finish. American Chippendale Walnut Drop Leaf Dining Table. Pennsylvania or Delaware c. 1760-80 Probably Delaware River Valley. Originally One of a Pair Straight Marlborough Legs Item# 130002IWT18 The drop leaf dining table was a very prominent form in homes of the higher classes during the Chippendale and Federal periods. A working solution to the problem of balancing space with flexibility in a home that entertained company regularly. It allowed for tables to be posed as pier or serving tables against the wall, making the room large and inviting during a social engagement, these being brought out as needed to recreate a dining room. This table was almost certainly part of a pair originally. Two sets of bracket holes on one leaf evidence of clasps that would have attached to the leaves of the other table to create a solid surface. A pair of tables ... morevery similar in form, though crafted with solid board leaves, was offered at Christies in 2003( Lot 322. Sale 1189, sold as a pair for $13,145) Intact pairs of this form are rather uncommon as these were regularly broken up as they were passed down in families. The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and back rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. Up for Auction Today Late 18th Century Federal Mahogany Double Pedestal Dining Table with Significant Historical Value 99" x 55" Documented to have been in the Col Issac Franks Home(Now known as the Deshler-Morris House) in Germantown Pa during George Washingtons stay there in 1793 to escape the Yellow Fever Epidemic in Philadelphia and again in 1794. This Table has been in my Family for over 100 years and was purchased by my Grandfather. George Arthur Plimpton in the G L Pendleton Auction in 1897. It was passed to my Mother and then to me. Colonel Issac Franks Grandson. George W Huffnagle sold this Table to G L Pendleton in 1885 and Pendleton to My Grandfather. I have a Letter from George Huffnagle to Pendleton describing the articles which he purchased from him detailing the account of George Washingtons stay at the Franks Home ... morewhere this table originated. I have a transcript to that letter below. The house was built in 1772 by merchant David Deshler. And a mere five years later it was in the middle of the raging Battle of Germantown. British General Sir William Howe occupied the house after the Battle. In 1793 the Yellow Fever epidemic swept through the capital of Philadelphia. And people from all over the city sought refuge in the country. President George Washington and his cabinet escaped the Fever in Germantown. Washington lived and conducted business from the Deshler-Morris house. At the time it was the Franks House. As it had passed to its second owner, Colonel Isaac Franks. During November. 1793, Washington lived in the house and met with his cabinet: Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Edmund Randolph and Henry Knox. Oscar Wilde A Wonderful 17thC English Oak Refectory Table Period: Charles II/Stuart Provenance: Unknown Date: c.1680-1700 Length: 62.5 inches Width: 27.5 inches Height: 29 inches Leg Room: 23.5 inches The seventeenth century oak refectory table having a richly coloured rectangular boarded top with pegged ends on turned baluster legs joined by a low level'H' stretcher. Survives from late seventeenth century Stuart period England. The condition is hugely evocative of its life thus far and as such is not for those who favour perfection but large doses of Stuart period character. There may be later additions and there is a triangular shaped repair to the top which also has bowing. Splits and losses. ... moreThese include a corner section of loss, and two or three cracks running through the top that have widened with temperature changes throughout its years. The underside of the top is a fabulous grey oak colour, expected with oak of this age. There are sections of gnarled loss to the legs, especially to one in particular and another of the legs looks like a possible later replacement as the turnings are not quite of the same proportions as the other three. The colour and patination is superb to the top and we have given her a light wax. We don’t believe any of these imperfections make the table any less practical but if one is shy of character it may be best to look elsewhere. C. 1750-70 Item# 130002IWT18 The drop leaf dining table was a prominent form in homes of the higher classes during the Chippendale and Federal periods. A working solution to the problem of balancing space with flexibility in a home that entertained company regularly. It allowed for tables to be posed as pier or serving tables against the wall, making the room large and inviting during a social engagement, these being brought out as needed to recreate a dining room. This table was almost certainly part of a pair originally. Two sets of bracket holes on one leaf evidence of clasps that would have attached to the leaves of the other table ... moreto create a solid surface. A pair of tables very similar in form, though crafted with solid board leaves, was offered at Christies in 2003( Lot 322. Sale 1189, sold as a pair for $13,145) Intact pairs of this form are rather uncommon as these were regularly broken up as they were passed down in families. The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and back rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. FABULOUS 18TH CENTURY TOWNSEND GODDARD NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND WALNUT CHIPPENDALE BALL& CLAW LEG DINING TABLE With the highest possible compliments Bay Colony Antiques is honored to offer you this extraordinarily important last half of the 18th Century Townsend Goddard Walnut Chippendale drop leaf dining table on gracefully formed legs and the very finest Ball& Claw Talon foot feet. This table comes from a fine Vermont estate and was purchased at Christies in the 1980's. The table is obviously in an untouched original finish and first surface. The only restorations we note are the re-forming of some of the very bottoms of the feet that had been worn done/deteriorated over the last 250 years. The work performed appears to be done in the last 50 years. Its a museum grade addressing of the re-definition of the feet and only the very ... morebase of them. The legs have not been terminated and re-added. These are the original feet. Please. No question is too small and we are happy to assist you further on this topic. The only other issue we observed is a few newer screws were installed to replace ones that had shook loose from the table box over the last few centuries. That's it! You're zoom browser should be able to show you any issues you desire to inspect. The table box is a case study in the mechanics of pure Townsend Goddard Furniture. There are not many of these pieces on the market. These are highly prized& coveted by American museums and important private collections. This, as we noted, comes from the latter. The top is crafted from a serious of walnut planks. The table box is joined with a complex serious of tight precise dovetails& pegs with half moon cut outs defining each end of it. The top is wonderfully scrubbed out and so nice to see in its original finish where one can observe the techniques of how the Townsend's& Goddard's formed and joined their tables. It measures just over 17" wide. With the leaves open, it measures about 44-1/8" wide. It shows normal wear and tear commensurate with age and use- most notably a scratch in the center of the top of the table. This is an Antique 18th Century Gate Leg Walnut Dining Room Table. It has two gate legs on each side of the table. When the table is opened completely it measures 65 inches by 48 inches by 30 inches high. When the sides are down it measures 48 inches by 23 3/8 inches and 30 inches high. It is made with planks of wood on the top and two of the wood planks have separated. The table is still firmly attached though. Very beautiful table. It can be used for many purposes. It can be used with both sides down. One side up and the other side down or both sides down. The camera flash makes the wood appear to be lighter than it actually is. I acquired this many. Fine American Chippendale Walnut Dining Table, Pennsylvania Antique c. 1760-70
The drop leaf table was a very prominent form in homes of the higher classes. A wonderful solution to entertaining regularly in the home. This table whole part of a pair originally, only a little part missing on the bottom of one leg. Construction: The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and ... moreback rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. A single thick walnut brace dovetails into either side of the bottom of the frame, reglued during the 20th Century. This form is less than typical. One that does not appear on the market frequently. Crafted with the clean simplicity we cherish in works of Chester County and the Delaware River Valley, the table is free of embellishment or unnecessary decoration- a well patinated surface shows great character, this emboldened by the strength and masculinity of the block feet. It is a piece you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Materials: Oak(outer rails. Gate leg frame) Poplar(sides of interior frame) Walnut(front and back of table frame, all leaves and legs) Measurements: 49 1/2" deep x 43" wide x 28" high; leaves are 17" in depth. English Chippendale Mahogany Ball and Claw Antique Drop Leaf Dining Table c 1780
ENGLISH CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY BALL AND CLAW DROP LEAF DINING TABLE Late 18th Century. Probably c. 1780 Item# 411ECP29P This attractive table was crafted during the last quarter of the 18th century. Probably in England though possibly in Ireland. The incredibly wide solid mahogany planks making up the drop leaves and the top of the table are absolutely gorgeous, each with vibrant swirling grains and retaining a deep ruby color. They swing over ruled joints on period wrought iron hinges. It rests over nicely carved ball and claw feet with rather precise details- a previous owner obviously wished the table to be slightly higher to accommodate chairs, and as such had the balls finished with 1" carved pads from beneath. They were clearly quite careful about preserving the feet, not altering the carvings but rather simply applying these beneath ... morethe table. Two legs swing outward to lift the leaves of the table comfortably, making the table a rather substantial dining room piece that should be able to comfortably seat six to eight guests. This is a particularly useful form for homes where dinner parties and family gatherings are common- it can serve very attractively as a console table in the dining room or a behind a centered sofa in the living room. But when an excess of company comes over it can be brought out as a full dining table. This flexibility is what made the form so prominent during the 18th century, where entertaining large groups in the evenings was very common. Measurements: 28 3/8" H x 22 3/8" D(with leaves down) x 50 5/8" L; 65" total depth when leaves are opened; 22 1/2" H to the underside of the frame Condition Report: Top is probably a period replacement. As hinge out out on underside of one leaf does not match the hinge well of the top. Surface overall is in good condition, though one leaf has some areas of clouding and a circular bloom in the shellac from a hot object placed there.
