18th Century American Chippendale Drop Leaf Dining Table, Pennsylvania c 1770-90
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for an 18th Century American Chippendale Carved Ball and Claw Foot Drop Leaf Table. Pennsylvania, almost certainly from Philadelphia, circa 1770-90. Each board on this stunning table is fully solid single planks of Mahogany, each carefully selected for the best possible grains. They are hand planed to leave a flawless top surface, with an unfinished and uneven planed underside. The leaves hang from the table with hand crafted original hinges, uncommon with the pressure usually on these hinges, but a statement to the quality of craftsmanship in the piece. One hinge is a possible replacement. Still a period hand forged hinge, but of different dimension from the other three) The hinges are reinforced ... moreto allow originality and functionality at the same time. The top sits gracefully over its original frame. The frame has a most graceful form. With a flowing carved apron floating the front and back. The practical hand craftsmanship is obvious, where the cabinetmaker carved and finished the front of each apron, but left the back unfinished with evidence of chisel and knife throughout. Each corner is formed with a pegged tenon-mortise joint, while the frame- of primarily pine secondary woods- joins with dovetailed construction for a permanent build. The underside of the table is locked on to the top with original glued blocks. The frame sits over four cabriole legs, rolling with ease into the tendons and muscles tensed in grip. It has some of the most beautiful Philadelphia ball and claw carvings, with full details of the talons, stretched skin and sharpness of the grasping nails reaching around each perfectly formed ball. Small knicks and marks from the knife are still apparent where they carefully carved each foot. The piece boasts the most magnificent patina and depth of finish. With a deep glow and incredible oxidization throughout. Every part of this piece is a testamen

American Chippendale Antique Drop Leaf Dining Table, Pennsylvania or Delaware
American Chippendale Walnut Drop Leaf Dining Table. Pennsylvania or Delaware c. 1760-80 Probably Delaware River Valley. Originally One of a Pair Straight Marlborough Legs Item# 130002IWT18 The drop leaf dining table was a very prominent form in homes of the higher classes during the Chippendale and Federal periods. A working solution to the problem of balancing space with flexibility in a home that entertained company regularly. It allowed for tables to be posed as pier or serving tables against the wall, making the room large and inviting during a social engagement, these being brought out as needed to recreate a dining room. This table was almost certainly part of a pair originally. Two sets of bracket holes on one leaf evidence of clasps that would have attached to the leaves of the other table to create a solid surface. A pair of tables ... morevery similar in form, though crafted with solid board leaves, was offered at Christies in 2003( Lot 322. Sale 1189, sold as a pair for $13,145) Intact pairs of this form are rather uncommon as these were regularly broken up as they were passed down in families. The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and back rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. A single thick walnut brace dovetails into either side of the botto

Fine American Chippendale Antique Card Table, Pennsylvania 18th Century c 1760
Fine American Chippendale Mahogany Card Table over Marlborough Legs Pennsylvania c. 1775-1785 in nearly untouched condition Primary Woods: Mahogany[tops. Primary case, legs, molding] Secondary Woods: Golden Oak[gate leg frame] Yellow Pine[back board of frame, runners, interior blocking] Cedar[triangular blocks under drawer bottom] Poplar[drawer sides and bottom] Item# 130108MWT12 This is an exceptional work of art. An American Chippendale Mahogany Card Table from Pennsylvania circa the last quarter of the 18th Century, likely crafted between 1775-85. The table is remarkably well preserved, almost entirely untouched other than regular maintenance of the finish through periodic and regular waxing- the finish beneath is possibly not original, or at least partially restored, but is very early and highly patinated. Every aspect of the table is ... moreoriginal, including the highly delicate C-Scroll returns that flank each leg- these are replaced or damaged with high frequency due to their precarious nature, particularly the left rear bracket, as this is only secured at the table frame and does not attach to the gating leg. Clearly the table remained in one area without being moved or roughly handled for much of it's life. The top is crafted of broad solid planks of mahogany. Each just under an inch thick and spanning the entire depth of 17 3/4" without a second board. The figure is warm and flowing, a rich pudding surface that is even more evident on the cleaner"game" surface. The top lifts over original hinges to rest on the gating back leg, this crafted with golden oak making up both ends of the knuckled board, tenoned into the rear left leg and pinned with two wooden pegs. A single drawer pulls out from the front with an outstanding Rococo pair of brasses, likely imports from England and fully original, the edge of the drawer lined with a thin cockbead molding to give shape to the drawer. The drawer is framed with poplar secondaries, the deeply chamfered bottom sliding into rabbets along the sides with

18th 19th Century American Walnut Tilt Candlestand Birdcage Table Pennsylvania ?
All Shipping. Feedback and Terms of sale are included* Item Description Here's a nice looking small candlestand tilt table with birdcage tilt-swivel mechanism. The piece is hand made solid Walnut(we think) Posssibly mahogany. Shows great character. The table is in excellent condition for a 200 year old + or- piece. Its sturdy except for shrinkage to the top post part. The stem or post part has shrunk and there's a very slight looseness to the top. U could add tape I suppose to fill the looseness but I wouldn't. It doesn't lean or wobble where food or drink would spill. Its just not rock solid as it was 200 years ago. But the legs are. They are absolutely tight& solid. The table measures 19 inches tall x 12 1/2 across its top. There's one repair to the top. The top is seamed in the middle and chiseled to a finished ... moredish shape with raised rim edge. One unique feature is the legs are not spread equally. They are an uneven triangle with 2 almost at 180 degrees to the other. They are at about 125 degrees to make the table. When folded down, fit more compact. Another neat feature or detail is how thinnly the legs are cut as the leg narrows down to the feet. Review all the pictures; enlarged views. For more details as they are a part of item's description. Most items we sell are old. Vintage, or antique. Unless stated they sell As Is without warranty or return. Fine American Chippendale Walnut Dining Table, Pennsylvania Antique c. 1760-70
The drop leaf table was a very prominent form in homes of the higher classes. A wonderful solution to entertaining regularly in the home. This table whole part of a pair originally, only a little part missing on the bottom of one leg. Construction: The top is crafted of five boards butt-jointed with tongue-in-groove joinery assisting in all but one leaf. This probably a later solution to the uneven shrinking of the boards, secured from the underside with butterfly dovetails. The leaves hang over ruled joints, lifting on two swinging gate legs, the frame and knuckle crafted of solid oak double pinned to the square Marlborough leg. The oak rails are affixed with scattered rosehead nails to the poplar frame rails coupled with one original hand filed screw set in wells into the top on both sides, these boards joined to the mahogany front and ... moreback rails with exposed dovetails behind the gate legs. Three dovetailed walnut braces join the frame to the top, these absent several screws, the top likewise secured with three hand filed screws set evenly in wells through the mahogany front and back rails. A single thick walnut brace dovetails into either side of the bottom of the frame, reglued during the 20th Century. This form is less than typical. One that does not appear on the market frequently. Crafted with the clean simplicity we cherish in works of Chester County and the Delaware River Valley, the table is free of embellishment or unnecessary decoration- a well patinated surface shows great character, this emboldened by the strength and masculinity of the block feet. It is a piece you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Materials: Oak(outer rails. Gate leg frame) Poplar(sides of interior frame) Walnut(front and back of table frame, all leaves and legs) Measurements: 49 1/2" deep x 43" wide x 28" high; leaves are 17" in depth. Condition Report: Finish is somewhat early beneath many layers of later wax. Though the surface has much variation of color, including scars, abrasions and other u

As it is of solid walnut and quite dense. This table is in pristine condition down to its original brass. Note the use of Southern yellow pine on the drawer sides(typical and desirable for this geographic area) and the very strong, fine dovetails…this came out of a first class shop. A related example to this. In cherry, is illustrated as cat. no. 1458 in American Antiques in Israel Sack Collection, vol.3. American Queen Anne Cherry Antique Tilting Tea Table, Pennsylvania c. 1770
AMERICAN QUEEN ANNE CHERRY TILTING BIRDCAGE TEA TABLE Possibly Chester County. C. 1770 Item# 501GKR17P This fine American Queen Anne tilting tea table is probably a work of Chester or a nearby county. The table is preserved in outstanding condition. The restorations completed very competently and with great respect for the originality of the work. Typical of the smaller cherry planks, the upper third of the top probably started to separate from the lower two-thirds from shrinking along the grains at one point, which was healed by routing the back and inserting a splice to join the two leaves from the back. Often this is healed with a line of dovetails, so this is a somewhat imaginative and quite effective mechanism. The gap is completely healed and has resolved any bowing that may have been in the planks. Behind the top, the original cleats ... moreare affixed to the top with a series of screws set in the original wells; battens are spliced on either outer edge of the cleats to also help with what was probably a slight bow in the wood. Tenons projecting from the birdcage into the cleats allow the top to tilt easily, locking in place with it's original brass clasp and catch, both unmoved from their original positions. The birdcage is a work of sheer beauty, the tiny swollen baluster pedestals making up the corners in nearly exact replication of the larger pedestal of the table- even down to the smallest detail of the scratched beading around the midriff of the swell. These tenon through the top of the birdcage and are locked in place with split-wedges. A half-moon wedge slides through the turned collar to lock the birdcage into the void of the pedestal; typical of Chester County tables, the wedge and placement of the birdcage pillars is such that the table can easily rotate a full three-hundred and sixty degrees without touching the wedge or being in anyway inhibited. The pedestal is a wonderfully turned from a thick block of cherry, the recesses showing the alligatored and dirty cloudiness of the retained early finis
