English Chippendale Period Antique Ball and Claw Mahogany Game Table c. 1790
English Chippendale Mahogany Carved Ball and Claw Foot Game Table Late 18th Century. Circa 1790 Item# 130002IRP01 This is a wonderful English Chippendale Period Carved Ball and Claw Foot Antique Game Table. Late 18th Century c. 1790. It is a piece upon which no expense was spared in the production. As every design embellishment commonly associated with the period was executed on this piece. The mahogany top has a nailed quarter-round rim applied on both levels, opening on original brass hinges and untouched screws to reveal a replaced felt surface bordered by mahogany. It projects softly over the frame. This being covered in vertically grained mahogany veneers not just on the front and on the sides, but also along the entire back. This added expense of finishing the back leg surfaces and adding the thick veneers is typically superfluous and ... moreconsidered unnecessary, as the table would remain against the wall- this detail certainly hints this was a commissioned piece for a home of means. The frame is dovetailed pine, as evident when opening the rear gating-leg, the drawer blades likewise dovetailed on either side as they stretch horizontally beneath and above the drawer. The facade of the table has a single broad drawer in the center. The edges framed in tacked cockbead molding(absent on the right side) around the dovetailed oak secondary woods, the bottom crafted of five untouched oak boards nailed perpendicular to the face. The cast brass bail pull handle is absolutely gorgeous, an entirely original and entirely hand forged work of art still retaining it's original backplates, pins and nuts. The underside of the apron has applied gadrooned molding. Nailed every few inches from beneath with short iron nails, carved to match up with the outward flowing acanthus scrolls of the knee returns. The workmanship in the carved knees is exacting, the crisp flowing rococo lines simply sprawling over the sharp knees and down the leg as a natural outgrowth from the gadrooning. The table is a single plank dish topped table, standing on cabriole legs with shaped pad feet having a gun-barrel tapering column rising over, with a classic turned bird-cage rising over which is the swivel top having a later fitted mahogany toggle which has replaced the banjo catch that has been removed at some period during its history. Rising over this is a single piece mahogany top with beautiful figuring. The base revolves on the bird-cage axis. Condition: The table is in very nice near original condition. There are one or two distress marks. Consistent with age and authenticity, the top having been re-finished revealing a lovely antique patination matching the base beautifully, the base appearing to retain its original finish. The table has one or two restorations, the top having been re-finished, the banjo catch having been replaced with a wooden toggle. There is an old metal plate on the bird-cage top where the banjo catch would have snaped into. There are a couple of repairs to cracks in the bird-cage plates but this is all consistent with wear, age and use again adding to character and authenticity. The table is mahogany with birch inlay and mahogany veneers. It has a fifth leg that swings open to support the top and is probably from New England. The table is 36" wide by 18" deep by 30" high closed. Opened it is 36" across by 29" high. It was once a gorgeous table but has some significant problems as follows: the top is warped and there have been some rather sloppy repairs. Mostly done with a shellac stick. From my late mothers estate a Mahogany 3 tier dumb waiter believed to be George 111.It is in good condition with some very minor repairs.Scratches and marks commensurate with age and use. Size is large tier 21.5in.medium tier 16.5in and small tier 13in.The whole piece is approx 41.5in high.It dismantles into 5 pieces with the original wooden screw threads. English Chippendale Mahogany Tilt Top Side Table over Snake Feet Late 18th Century Item# 110005GFF25 This is an English Chippendale Mahogany Tilting Tea Table. Of the period c. 1760-90. Of remarkable weight, it features a single solid board top, hand planed carefully to create a perfect smooth surface. A thick varnish finish covers the entire piece, glowing on the top, with craquelure throughout the varnish along the pedestal and legs. The original hand carved cleats affix the top to the pedestal with a mix of a few remaining original hand crafted screws among later added screws. A brass catch on the underside of the table top still functions fully to secure the table in a resting postion, this appearing to be a period addition improving over the old catch system- originally a dowel likely joined through the left cleat into a hole in the ... morepedestal head to lock the table top in place. The pedestal tenons through the square base. Solidly locking these two critical components permanently[not the numerous repairs to the square head of the pedestal; this appears to be the original plank with later repairs to help secure it] The pedestal is carefully turned shaft ending in a carved spiral urn, then locking into the legs with tight dovetail joints. Cabriole legs curve down and terminate in simple oval slipper feet. A piece that has seen some life. This is a fine well crafted period tea table. From a conservation standpoint, it would be beneficial to have the current finish removed chemically and a shellac reapplied. It is a fine piece for anyone with a home of colonial or Chippendale design, a sturdy work that is fully capable of regular use in the home. Measurements: Top measures 30 3/4" wide x 30 1/8" wide(across grains) 44 7/8" high in tilted position. 27 1/2" high in down position; 26 1/2" distance between each toe Condition Report: Refinished. Rare Pair of American Federal Mahogany Card Tables Possibly Philadelphia or New England States c. 1790-1800 Item# 130108USB12 This is a fantastic and rare acquisition- a fully original Pair of American Federal Mahogany Card Tables. They probably originate from Philadelphia. Though this form is also found in New York and the New England States. The tops are simply above reproach, each a single solid plank of mahogany with stringer inlay along the outer edges; the curved ovolu corners are sharp and precise, the boards each displaying magnificent dense grains and lifting over original untouched hinges. Brilliant mahogany veneers are edged with cockbead molding applied along the lower edge. All four legs have great form, these a distinctive evolution of the Marlboro leg with a well developed taper. Beneath the mahogany veneers. The sides of the ... moretables are crafted mostly of white pine with some solid mahogany; the back gate leg is oak and the back of the frame is white pine. The gate leg is affixed to the back of the frame with eight wrought nails on one table, seven wrought nails on the other. Original blocking is retained on one table, the other crafted without this blocking- interior structure shows no evidence of the table ever having been crafted with the blocking, which was probably deemed superfluous in light of the remarkable strength of the structure. Another minor variation between the tables is the gate leg: one table has a double pinned tenon joint, the other table crafted with the same tenon joint but only using glue. For any serious collector of fine American Federal antiques. This is an exceptional pair of card tables. They are very rare and difficult to acquire in original pairs, often being separated by heirs as family members divide out the inheritance. OLD Antique Flame Mahogany American Games Table 18th C on Mid Century Base
This is a marriage of a very old beautiful table top and mid century base and legs. The top of table is amazing. It believe it is flame mahogany. There was some type of apron around the bottom edge that has been removed. As you can see there is a huge patina difference where it was. The bottom of table has never been stained. There is a mid century base that has been added to make it a coffee table height. I am not a furniture expert. But I estimate the table top to be 18th or early 19th C. The base and legs are 1950's or 60's. Table is about 35 inches across. I think it is just two mirror image boards. There is a partial age crack that is lighter colored on the bottom, but It does not go all the way across.You can't see it at all on the top. The table is in very good to excellent condition with some minor wear as shown. I have ... moretaken several close ups for your consideration. There are also a couple of small knots in the bottom of table. They are not on the top. I see no shadow of where a base would have been in the middle. This is a mystery table.Very interesting! I am happy to offer a wonderful very old. Late 1700's, early 1800's, tilt top table made of solid flame mahogany. The top was made in the shape of a tortoise shell(this was done in England when being brought to the colonies) and was originally adopted from the shipping lane to the islands. I seen these tables in Barbados 24 years ago. It is the first time I found one here in the northeast. The estate I received it from was from a fine collector that traveled worldwide buying their furnishings. FIRST. The table is in excellent condition with no major. Nor could I see minor.repairs. The lovely column is handcarved as well as the padded feet. It is all solid mahogany. The table top is amazingly beautiful, being made of solid flame mahogany, no veneers and of one board. The galley edge is handcarved as well and"PEGGED" construction ... moreto the ornate edge. See the pictures. The back has the original early latch and lock setup. Nothing has been added or subtracted from this table. The design in the table is extrodinary and beautiful. Good and sturdy, this table can be used and enjoyed to its max. The table measures when tilted open. 43 1/2" high. When in use and locked, it measures 28 1/2" from the floor and the top from north to south and east to west is a true 28 3/4" each way. Fine craftsmen carved the acanthus leaves and delightful ornate tripod with the true pad feet giving it a good square solid fit to the floor, making it safe and not tipsy. The weight of the table is also a great factor. This table is not of flimsy lesser light woods and again, it makes a suitable table for many years of good use. Please email any questions. Crafted with a very dense and vibrant grained Cuban mahogany top. The flow of the grains is incredibly attractive, the intense ribbing through the center made accentuated by the smooth straight grains along the edges of the leaves. Lifting over triangular wings that easily swing from their resting place integral with the frame, the surface is broad and highly functional. Both leaves retain their three original hand forged iron hinges. A single drawer eases in and out of the front of the table with a brass bail pull(replaced) ... morethe drawer front framed in an applied cockbead molding around most of the dovetails of the front joint. The bottom is deeply chamfered with triangular blocks set in the bevel to secure the drawer bottom firmly. Finishing the lower edge of the apron on both sides of the table is a thin tri-bead molding over the tapering Marlborough legs embellished with scrolling returns with a shapely stretcher joining into the legs with a tenon; these lift vertically in a cyma-curving climb embellished by offset nibs above and below each stretcher until they ultimately cross in an over-under joint. Truly eye catching are the crisp fluting and perfectly tapered form of each leg, this executed on the front and side of each leg with the interior corner being bevelled and interior sides left plain. They are sharp and very fine. The quality and craftsmanship in this fine piece is above reproach in every way- precise joinery and perfect carving have resulted in an investment grade work of art. Antique Georgian Mid 18th Century Brass Inlaid Mahogany Tripod Table
A very good quality mid 18th century tilt top tripod table. With a one piece top, wrythen turned column, and brass inlaid feet. There are plenty of Georgian tripod tables that loosely fall into the category of mid range furniture, this one is much better than most. If anyone is seriously looking for a tilt top table this one is worth consideration. It is made from very good Cuban or Spanish mahogany, the top is cut from one plank. It measures 31 inches across and is still probably as flat as when it was finished, with good figure and in virtually unmarked condition. Like most furniture it has no makers mark, the feet are inlaid with brass, a nice bit of added detail. The only maker I know that inlaid brass into tables like this is Frederick Hintz, maybe whoever made this had seen his work. Overall height is aprox. 28 inches, general condition ... moreis very good, the legs and the base are solid, there has been some repair here. There is a very old metal plate to one foot, see images) I suspect one of the legs got broken, but the repair is good. The block and catch are good, there are some old worm flight holes here, this has been treated just to make sure. The finish is just wax, I have not French polished it. Antique Circa 1800 Hepplewhite Philadelphia Mahogany Pembroke Table String Inlay
Early mahogany pembroke table in very good condition. Probably Philadelphia. Original brass caps on each leg. String lightwood inlay on the selvedge of the top and drop leaves. Pine secondary wood. There is an age split on one of the top corners. Refer to the photos for detail. There is also a ring that goes through the finish on one drop leaf from what appears to be the outline of a flowerpot that sat on it. The table features two elegant reeded drop leaf tables to either side. The leaves can be raised to widen the table. The original wooden hinged arms underneath the tabletop support the drop leaves. There is a working drawer at both ends of the table. The drawers also feature the original brass ring pull lion mask handles. The drawers have been hand dovetailed and oak lined. They also feature a working lock and key. The table sits on a central ring turned pedestal. Which is in turn supported by four reeded splayed legs, which terminate in the original brass lion paw feet and castors. This item retains the original polish and is completely original. This table will accommodate four people but when extended. Will seat up to six people.
