English Chippendale Mahogany Carved Ball and Claw Foot Game Table Late 18th Century. Circa 1790 Item# 130002IRP01 This is a wonderful English Chippendale Period Carved Ball and Claw Foot Antique Game Table. Late 18th Century c. 1790. It is a piece upon which no expense was spared in the production. As every design embellishment commonly associated with the period was executed on this piece. The mahogany top has a nailed quarter-round rim applied on both levels, opening on original brass hinges and untouched screws to reveal a replaced felt surface bordered by mahogany. It projects softly over the frame. This being covered in vertically grained mahogany veneers not just on the front and on the sides, but also along the entire back. This added expense of finishing the back leg surfaces and adding the thick veneers is typically superfluous and ... moreconsidered unnecessary, as the table would remain against the wall- this detail certainly hints this was a commissioned piece for a home of means. The frame is dovetailed pine, as evident when opening the rear gating-leg, the drawer blades likewise dovetailed on either side as they stretch horizontally beneath and above the drawer. The facade of the table has a single broad drawer in the center. The edges framed in tacked cockbead molding(absent on the right side) around the dovetailed oak secondary woods, the bottom crafted of five untouched oak boards nailed perpendicular to the face. The cast brass bail pull handle is absolutely gorgeous, an entirely original and entirely hand forged work of art still retaining it's original backplates, pins and nuts. The underside of the apron has applied gadrooned molding. Nailed every few inches from beneath with short iron nails, carved to match up with the outward flowing acanthus scrolls of the knee returns. The workmanship in the carved knees is exacting, the crisp flowing rococo lines simply sprawling over the sharp knees and down the leg as a natural outgrowth from the gadrooning. BEAUTIFUL MID-19th CENTURY ENGLISH MAHOGANY WRITING TABLE. C. 1860, LEATHER TOP This beautiful English mahogany writing table is early Victorian. Dating to approximately 1860. The rectangular top has rounded corners and a moulded edge. It is inset with a green leather panel decorated with gilt tooling. The desk has a row of three drawers with handsome brass drop handles and backplates. The backside of the table is finished which allows for the piece to be placed free-standing if desired, rather than up against a wall. The desk stands on fluted legs with baluster carved acanthus leaves, ending in brass caps and casters. The piece measures 54"w x 25-3/4"d x 29-1/2"h. Condition: Overall. The piece is in very good condition considering its age and use. the piece has minor wear, rubbing and scratches commensurate with age. This is a listing for a very elegant fine antique English George III mahogany wine table. To be fully appreciated this piece of furniture must be put in its historical context. The Georgian(1714 to 1837) style embraces a century under the reign of three Georges and is often divided into the Palladian early and late Georgian periods. The style was partly a reaction to baroque which George I loathed. As the century progressed. The style became lighter in terms of colours and decoration. The age of mahogany dominated much of the middle part of the 18th century. The beginning of this period saw a sudden simplification of style into less ornamental and more elegant aesthetic. English George III Chippendale Late 18th Century Mahogany Tilting Side Tea Table
Very Fine English Chippendale Period Highly Figured Mahogany Slipper Foot Tilt Top Tea Table Third quarter of the 18th Century. C. 1750-70 Item# 110005LHP25 The grace of this piece is found in the highly figured top. A single solid plank of mahogany hand planed carefully to create a perfect smooth surface. A glowing deep patina shines through the years of waxed layers preserving the entire piece. Hand carved fully original cleats connect the top to the base, with four hand made screws that appear to be original, and two later replaced screws attaching the cleats to the original top. A replaced brass catch on the underside of the table top functions fully to secure the table in a resting postion; the shape of the original brass catch was circular, still evident as an impression around the current catch. The pedestal tenons through the square ... morebase. With the letters"DL" still visible at the tenon and in photos below. These could possibly be a signature of the craftsman who designed this table. The pedestal is carefully turned shaft culminates in a vasiform baluster, the three legs locking into the shaft with tight dovetail joints. The cabriole leg form is tight and sprung, the table almost poised to leap; the lines curve down and terminate in sharp well formed oval slipper feet. This is a fine piece for any home. Working easily in any number of design scenarios. In the upward tilted position, it is ideal to bring beauty to that empty corner or fill a long wall with two chairs on either side. Naturally, it functions wonderfully as a tea table or common side table, bringing elegance to any collection of furnishings. This is a very nice solid mahogany original Tea Table made in England circa 1860. Lt could be used as a game table also. There is a drawer to the one side which is solid oak with dovetail joints. Fine Chippendale Mahogany Shell Carved Tea Table Probably Ireland. Possibly England, c. 1755-85 Item# 130309DVH23 As one of the most beautiful and well balanced. Well proportioned and finely embellished tea tables we've ever carried, this is a rare and exceptional work of art. The top is a solid plank of mahogany with the rim scooped from the solid in a smooth curve. Projecting softly over the frame, the deep scalloping of the apron just dances and flows, greatly lightening what could easily be an overly heavy apron in the hands of a lesser artisan. The mahogany for the apron was chosen with care, the dense closed grain with a soft flow that follows the soft curve of the apron. Central to both sides of the apron is an applied shell carving. The table rests over cabriole legs with heavily carved acanthus leafage around a checkered knee, ... moreeach leg terminating in highly detailed ball and claw feet. The top affixes to the frame with original pine blocking, the underside of the top being inscribed illegibly. Almost certainly of Irish origin. Though possibly of British origin with Irish influence, this table remains in simply outstanding condition. Preserved and original in every way, this selection is sure to delight the most serious collectors of fine English furniture. Measurements: 30 1/4" wide x 19 1/2" deep x 27 3/4" high Condition Report: Some sunbleaching. More notable to one shell carved side than the other three sides- this side likely was facing forward. Finish preserved under later layers of wax. Light losses to edge of one shell, though the front remains crisp and well presented. Lip of top is patched in one section with a 4 5/8" long patch. Separation at one joint revealing the tenon joinery inside. All glue blocks are original, one missing, eight reglued with carpenter's glue in the last decade. Underside is inscribed illegibly. This petite little table is generally considered a game table while probably never having been used for this purpose- it is a presentation piece, meant to be displayed in a hallway or living space and enjoyed for it's great beauty and not necessarily it's function. However, it certainly was crafted with tea time in mind, being of perfect dimensions for enjoying tea service in the afternoon with company. Of note is the careful treatment of the top, whereby the edging of the entirety of both top and bottom leaves are flawlessly molded with the carved egg-and-dart design, making it actually more ... moreattractive in it's fully opened position and allowing it to be placed between two chairs in a living space. This form of presentation leverages the sheer presence of the top, both leaves of which are hewn from solid single planks of brilliantly grained mahogany. The top has enjoyed quite careful climate control, as solid mahogany tops are particularly susceptible to cracking along the grain and becoming rather unattractive- however, due to the shrinking, the leaves do have a slight warp and the glue blocks no longer affix the top to the frame. We can fix this upon request by steaming two glue blocks to release the hide glue, then using hide glue to reaffix those blocks to the frame, or we can leave it as is and offer a small discount for you to have the work completed by your preferred furniture specialist. The frame of the table is crafted of mahogany planks tenoned into the corners. Ebony inlay banding around the skirt in the front and back. One pull out drawer with oak secondary woods. And finely dovetailed construction. To the best of our belief, it retains the original wallpaper drawer lining. Mahogany tapered legs resting on brass casters. Great state of preservation! Nearly original condition. As far as we can tell. There has been no restoration work do e on this table. There is a bit of veneer patching on the drawer, but nothing major. There is some veneer bubbling on the back panel of the skirt, not loose. Minor dings and wear& use marks throughout. 4 small shrinkage splits in the top. None are loose, but they are there. C. 1730 Item# 411JPY15X This precious example of English craftsmanship is exquisite in every way- no expense was spared in what was almost certainly a commissioned piece. And clearly great care has been shown in the handling of the table over the last two hundred and eighty odd years. The top of the table is turreted to conform with the form of the apron, being planed from a single plank of handsomely grained mahogany. It lifts over original hinges on the sides to lower onto the rear legs, these pulling out of the frame on lopers to create a four legged table structure. The result is a very stable card playing surface, which probably accounts at least partially for the ... moreexcellent state of preservation we find in it today. The card surface is a green felt top(replaced and discolored) with candle holders on each turreted corner with four chip wells sunk into the top. Finally, the top also lifts over original hinges to reveal an interior compartment for storing games. The apron is veneered with vertical grained mahogany. The centermost with an original pierced brass escutcheon around the keyhole. The table is raised over bold cabriole legs with the most wonderful acanthus carving along the front knees- these carvings are deep and fluid, full of life and realism, both tapering into the leg which terminates in elegant carved claws grasping a sphere. The underside of the table reveals oversize blocking inside of the front legs with all returns original but one(rear left leg) For any serious collector of fine English antiques. This is an outstanding investment grade acquisition that in every way elevates whatever interior it becomes a part of. This English antique card table presents pristine clean lines accentuated by satinwood stringer inlays in a form that remains relevant to the classical interior even today. The inlay of the legs is particularly effective, each with a steep triangular inlay that speeds up the taper of the leg almost imperceptibly. The ovolu form of the top softens the rectangular form of the table with inset curved corners; the apron of the table conforms to this shape, the facade divided into three distinct panels of vibrant flamed mahogany veneers framed in satinwood stringer ... moreinlay. Both back legs project on a knuckle joint. Allowing the top to flip open to rest solidly on a full four corners- the hinge placement is interesting and atypical, the craftsman utilizing hinges cast in an H-form to allow these to remain hidden behind the table. The rest of the apron construction is also pine, the ovolu corners constructed of laminated pine- meaning, the pine is cut to the shape of the corner in stacks, allowing a more economical use of the wood. Original steel screws are sunk in wells to affix the apron to the top, two original corner blocks securing the rear corners of the frame. For any collector of fine English antiques. C. 1780 with untouched structure(replaced brass pull) Item# 411VGP29P This is an exceptional find that remains preserved in nearly untouched condition. The replaced brass hardware not withstanding, after well over two hundred years. Probably crafted as a Salesman's sample, the form is a miniaturized version of a typical Georgian era work table. The top is a single plank of mahogany affixed from beneath the frame with hand cut brass screws set in wells at the front and back, also being lined with rectangular glued blocks. It projects rather substantially over the conforming frame with round carved edges of the solid. The front of the table features a single drawer with scratch bead simulated cockbead molding around the edges. It is constructed in the ... moretypical manner of the period. The dovetails very precisely executed on all corners; the bottom is set in rabbets and is nailed along the edges with hand forged iron brads and oak runners applied along with the strip at the front edge. The interior is untouched, a portion of the right runner absent, the left pine runner affixed with original rosehead nails into the frame. Particularly attractive is the very active scroll cut apron with it's sharp curvy contours along the sides and front. The front Marlborough legs are enhanced with a scratch bead along the outer front corners that neatly harmonizes with the etching of the drawer. The legs have chamfered inner corners. Which has a wonderful lightening effect on the presentation from the sides and when viewed at an angle. This is an exceedingly rare find. Particularly in such fine condition and with such robust form. It will certainly be a cherished acquisition for any serious collector of English antiques or anyone with a passion for miniatures and Salesman samples. English Chippendale Mahogany Ball and Claw Antique Drop Leaf Dining Table c 1780
ENGLISH CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY BALL AND CLAW DROP LEAF DINING TABLE Late 18th Century. Probably c. 1780 Item# 411ECP29P This attractive table was crafted during the last quarter of the 18th century. Probably in England though possibly in Ireland. The incredibly wide solid mahogany planks making up the drop leaves and the top of the table are absolutely gorgeous, each with vibrant swirling grains and retaining a deep ruby color. They swing over ruled joints on period wrought iron hinges. It rests over nicely carved ball and claw feet with rather precise details- a previous owner obviously wished the table to be slightly higher to accommodate chairs, and as such had the balls finished with 1" carved pads from beneath. They were clearly quite careful about preserving the feet, not altering the carvings but rather simply applying these beneath ... morethe table. Two legs swing outward to lift the leaves of the table comfortably, making the table a rather substantial dining room piece that should be able to comfortably seat six to eight guests. This is a particularly useful form for homes where dinner parties and family gatherings are common- it can serve very attractively as a console table in the dining room or a behind a centered sofa in the living room. But when an excess of company comes over it can be brought out as a full dining table. This flexibility is what made the form so prominent during the 18th century, where entertaining large groups in the evenings was very common. Measurements: 28 3/8" H x 22 3/8" D(with leaves down) x 50 5/8" L; 65" total depth when leaves are opened; 22 1/2" H to the underside of the frame Condition Report: Top is probably a period replacement. As hinge out out on underside of one leaf does not match the hinge well of the top. Surface overall is in good condition, though one leaf has some areas of clouding and a circular bloom in the shellac from a hot object placed there.
