Antique Georgian Mid 18th Century Brass Inlaid Mahogany Tripod Table
A very good quality mid 18th century tilt top tripod table. With a one piece top, wrythen turned column, and brass inlaid feet. There are plenty of Georgian tripod tables that loosely fall into the category of mid range furniture, this one is much better than most. If anyone is seriously looking for a tilt top table this one is worth consideration. It is made from very good Cuban or Spanish mahogany, the top is cut from one plank. It measures 31 inches across and is still probably as flat as when it was finished, with good figure and in virtually unmarked condition. Like most furniture it has no makers mark, the feet are inlaid with brass, a nice bit of added detail. The only maker I know that inlaid brass into tables like this is Frederick Hintz, maybe whoever made this had seen his work. Overall height is aprox. 28 inches, general condition ... moreis very good, the legs and the base are solid, there has been some repair here. There is a very old metal plate to one foot, see images) I suspect one of the legs got broken, but the repair is good. The block and catch are good, there are some old worm flight holes here, this has been treated just to make sure. The finish is just wax, I have not French polished it. Or a country primitive house with a more formal parlour. Top has been off of the center mounting block. And reglued. No real damage done, the block probably dried out and cracked, then somebody reinforced with dowel rods, and reset the block back onto the pedestal. This repair was most likely done 30-40 years ago. It is constructed from what we believe to be solid mahogany and walnut. Although please note that we are not 100% sure of the wood types. The table has an oval tray top, so-called because of the rail around the edge(please note that top does not remove) This rail was constructed from one continuous piece of thin wood, and is joined together at one side with a small metal bracket that is original to the piece. The top can be tilted. The table is supported on a tripod base with a turned central column with ring turnings. Condition: Overall ... morethis handsome piece is in good usuable condition. With some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, scratching and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of restoration and repair of various ages. The rail around the top has been repaired in one area. The supports underneath the top have been replaced at some point, and the catch for the top is also a more modern replacement. We believe the top of the central column may have had some work done at some point. One of the legs is slightly twisted. The table is solid and usuable but there is some slight movement in the joints. There are some signs of old woodworm to the base- this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution. Late 18th to early 19th Century original antique George II/ George III Georgian period dish top bird-cage snap top parlour/ breakfast/ dining table. The table is a single plank dish topped table, standing on cabriole legs with shaped pad feet having a gun-barrel tapering column rising over, with a classic turned bird-cage rising over which is the swivel top having a later fitted mahogany toggle which has replaced the banjo catch that has been removed at some period during its history. Rising over this is a single piece mahogany top with beautiful figuring. The base revolves on the bird-cage axis. Condition: The table is in very nice near original condition. There are one or two distress marks. Consistent with age and authenticity, the top having been re-finished revealing a lovely antique patination matching the base beautifully, the base appearing to retain its original finish. The table has one or two restorations, the top having been re-finished, the banjo catch having been replaced with a wooden toggle. There is an old metal plate on the bird-cage top where the banjo catch would have snaped into. There are a couple of repairs to cracks in the bird-cage plates but this is all consistent with wear, age and use again adding to character and authenticity. The table stands on turned tapering legs with pad feet with a lovely decorative carved knee decoration with plain rails uniting. Rare Miniature English Georgian Mahogany Work Table, Salesman Sample c. 1780
RARE ENGLISH GEORGIAN MAHOGANY MINIATURE WORK TABLE Probably a Salesman's Sample. C. 1780 with untouched structure(replaced brass pull) Item# 411VGP29P This is an exceptional find that remains preserved in nearly untouched condition. The replaced brass hardware not withstanding, after well over two hundred years. Probably crafted as a Salesman's sample, the form is a miniaturized version of a typical Georgian era work table. The top is a single plank of mahogany affixed from beneath the frame with hand cut brass screws set in wells at the front and back, also being lined with rectangular glued blocks. It projects rather substantially over the conforming frame with round carved edges of the solid. The front of the table features a single drawer with scratch bead simulated cockbead molding around the edges. It is constructed in the ... moretypical manner of the period. The dovetails very precisely executed on all corners; the bottom is set in rabbets and is nailed along the edges with hand forged iron brads and oak runners applied along with the strip at the front edge. The interior is untouched, a portion of the right runner absent, the left pine runner affixed with original rosehead nails into the frame. Particularly attractive is the very active scroll cut apron with it's sharp curvy contours along the sides and front. The front Marlborough legs are enhanced with a scratch bead along the outer front corners that neatly harmonizes with the etching of the drawer. The legs have chamfered inner corners. Which has a wonderful lightening effect on the presentation from the sides and when viewed at an angle. This is an exceedingly rare find. Particularly in such fine condition and with such robust form. It will certainly be a cherished acquisition for any serious collector of English antiques or anyone with a passion for miniatures and Salesman samples.
